How To Find Out How Old You Really Are at Home

How You Can Measure Some of Your Biomarkers of Aging At Home

How old are you really?

How old do you look and feel?

Is your body functioning at an age that is 10-20 years older than your actual age?

Is your body functioning at an age that is 10-20 years younger than your actual age?

Determining your biological age- the age you look and feel- and also the age at which your body functions, is the first step towards beginning an Age Management Medicine program.

Why, do you ask?

Because when you truly understand where you are your awareness shifts to where you want to be.

I will show you how you can measure your biological age in the comfort of your own home and use this important biomarker to map a healthy aging action plan for yourself.

When a patient comes to my office, I perform a Body Composition Analysis using the professional Body Composition Analyzer by Tanita.

This technology allows me to provide my patient with a printed readout of some of their biomarkers of aging.

One of the most important biomarkers of aging is your metabolic age.

This biomarker reflects the age that your body is functioning at by taking into consideration the number of calories that you burn at rest, the amount of muscle mass, body fat and bone mass that you have.

Have you ever wondered why some people can eat anything they want and not gain weight while other people gain weight from just seemingly looking at food?

The answer has to do with your metabolic age and your metabolism.

The younger your metabolic age, the better your body uses the food and drink you consume for fuel.

Every person has a different resting metabolic rate which is the number of calories that you burn at rest.

It is important to know how many calories you need at rest and for your body and immune system to function optimally in order to improve your metabolic age.

If you go below this number of calories that you body needs daily then your metabolism slows down and you may actually gain weight with anything you drink and eat either while on the diet or after the diet.

This is the reason that people who restrict their calories too much when on a diet either don't lose any weight or actually gain weight either during or after their diet.

There are 3 simple keys to LOWERING YOUR METABOLIC AGE:

    1. KNOW YOUR BASAL METABOLIC RATE- the number of calories that you burn at rest and that your body needs to function optimally.

This will help you to know how many calories you must eat every day to keep your metabolism high.

It will also help you to determine how many calories you need to burn off with exercise on a daily basis to reach your target body fat goal.

Notice that I wrote target body fat goal and not target weight goal.

Tip: Body weight can fluctuate so focus on lowering your body fat instead.

    2.INCREASE YOUR MUSCLE MASS.

Muscle mass is metabolically active tissue.

Every pound of muscle burns an extra 50-75 calories a day for you.

A youthful body is one that has lower body fat and abundant lean muscle mass.

Resistance exercises build lean muscle mass.

You can use weights or you can use your own body as resistance like in Pilates ,Yoga or by jumping on the Rebounder (mini trampoline).

    3.LOWER YOUR BODY FAT.

A pound of body fat only burns 3 calories a day for you.

Excess body fat also produces silent, chronic inflammation which leads to accelerated aging.

Can you see why it is important to gain awareness regarding your biological age- of which your metabolic age is a part- so that you can implement a program to decrease your biological age?

This is effectively done by lowering your body fat and increasing your muscle mass through exercise while being cautious not to decrease your calorie intake too much since this will slow down your metabolism.

This very important tool can be used once you have an Age Management Medicine program in place in order to monitor your progress and help you to own your results.

Owning your results and owning your body means that you reach your target goal and stay there long term.

In the article below, I will show you how easy it is to measure some of your biomarkers of aging at home.
