Fat vs. Muscle

What you need to know...
Fat vs. Muscle

Fat cells are NOT inactive storage vehicles. One pound of fat takes up more space than one pound of muscle.

Fat cells are rich in arachidonic acid (AA) which leads to inflammation.

Fat cells actively make over 100 proteins, fatty acids, hormones and inflammatory substances that = inflammation.

One pound of body fat burns 3 cal/day.

One pound of body fat= 3500 stored calories.

One pound of muscle burns 50-75 calories/day=increases metabolism

The more excess body fat you have- the lower your resting metabolism (the calories that you burn at rest)- the greater the amount of chronic inflammation in your body.

You can be thin and still have too much body fat- better known as being skinny fat.

The amount of body fat that you have is a better indicator of health and fitness than the amount of pounds that you weigh on a scale.

Addressing the symptoms of Male Andropause and Female Menopause are an important part of an Age Management Medicine program. These symptoms can begin in the late 30s and early 40s. They become most noticeable during the late forties and fifties.
