Education is the key to Healthy Aging. Many patients ask me about information that they read on the internet. In an effort to educate my patients on the best sources of information regarding healthy aging, I have composed the following guidelines:

1.IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE,IT LIKELY IS. Healthy Aging is about restoring balance in all areas of your life including exercise, nutrition, supplementation and hormone optimization. There is not ONE single method (supplement, medication or hormone) that will restore or assist with all aspects of healthy aging.

2. IF THE DOCTOR SETS THE PATIENT IN MOTION, THE BODY WILL HEAL. Healthy Aging is about optimizing those lifestyle choices that impact aging- Nutriton, Exercise, Supplementation and Hormone Optimization. It is NOT just about providing a hormone, prescription or supplement recommendation. A Healthy Aging Program should be dynamic and change with the patients needs.

3.AVOID OBTAINING INFORMATION FROM WEBSITES THAT EXCLUSIVELY SELL PRODUCTS OR BENEFIT FINANCIALLY FROM ANY RECOMMENDATION THAT THEY MAKE TO YOU. A physician has a responsiblity to their patient to remain objective when making medical recommendations. If the physician has ANY financial incentive regarding the medical recommendations that they are making for you, then it makes it very difficult for them to remain objective.

4.OBTAIN YOUR MEDICAL INFORMATION FROM RELIABLE SOURCES WHOSE ONLY GOAL IS TO EDUCATE. There are many sources of misinformation on the internet about healthy aging. Unfortunately, anyone can post information on a website-whether or not they are qualified to do so.

Folic Acid Decreases Risk of Dementia

Eating plenty of folic acid -a B Vitamin found in oranges, lemons and green vegetables - decreased by half the risk of Alzheimer's disease, a study has suggested.Folic acid is a synthetic form of vitamin B used in supplements and fortified foods. Folate is a more complex structure that occurs naturally in foods. Generally, the term "folate" is used when referring to the B vitamins in this category. US National Institute on Aging experts monitored diets over seven years. They found adults who ate the daily recommended allowance of folates (B vitamin nutrients) had a reduced risk of the disease. UK researchers said the study added weight to previous suggestions folates could reduce Alzheimer's risk. The study is published in Alzheimer's and Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer's Association.

Folates have already been proven to reduce birth defects(neural tube defects) and research suggests that they are beneficial to warding off heart disease and strokes. They have also been shown to help modify levels of homocysteine - an amino acid found in the blood.Previous research has linked high levels of homocysteine to an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease as well as heart disease.

Inflamm-Aging

Obesity leads to chronic and silent inflammation

Silent inflammation is the root cause for many, if not most, of the chronic diseases of aging. Acute inflammation is the body's response to injury, illness, infection, and stress. Obesity has been determined to be a source of chronic, silent inflammation that leads to accelerated biological aging.

Age Management Medicine can help not only to alleviate the symptoms of acute inflammation, but to to avoid the devastating effects of chronic inflammation. The key is to discover early on if the patient is likely to develop, or already has, underlying inflammation. The evaluation process begins with a thorough patient medical history profile, including a complete nutritional analysis. There are other things that are simple to look for during a physical exam-things that do not even require a blood test; first among these is obesity. Obesity promotes inflammation and there is a direct relationship between Body Mass Index( BMI) and C- Reactive Protein( CRP )results. The obese have low- grade systemic inflammation, and with obesity having turned into a national epidemic, this provides yet another reason for patients to follow nutritional guidelines and partake in an exercise program.
