Thanks from Conference Co-Chairs
Thanks to everyone who participated in NESUG 2011!
| Paul Gorrell |
There were 384 attendees from 23 States and 6 countries gathered at the Holiday Inn By The Bay in Portland Maine for three days to present, discuss, code, blog and tweet, using both familiar and new ways to share SAS expertise. There were over 150 formal papers, posters and workshops, plus numerous Solutions Theater, Code Clinic, and Collaboration Café events in the Solutions Center. Together, those provided many opportunities to listen, lounge, laugh, and especially to learn.
New this year was the Junior Professional Program and we welcomed program grant recipients. This program is supported by SAS as well as the NESUG Student Scholarship Program and we were pleased to welcome the student scholars to NESUG 2011.

This year we started each day with a special morning presentation. On Monday, Mike Zdeb presented "The Lifetime Warranty," a delightfully perfect blend of fun and substance. On Tuesday we held a "Spotlight on SAS" event with discussion and Q&A with SAS R&D and Customer Loyalty staff.
We introduced 4 new sections this year that were well attended: Finance, Large Data Sets, PROC FORMAT, and PROC SQL.
Our Local Users' Group, SUGME (SAS User Group of Maine), organized a popular scavenger hunt around Portland.
We were treated to some unusually warm weather for Portland and a welcome respite from the rainy weather "down south." And typical for Portland, we found some fantastic restaurants and met some wonderful, friendly, helpful people.

Thanks to our authors, presenters, all the volunteers, members of the conference leadership team, our corporate sponsors and exhibitors and SAS for making this a great SAS learning experience.
As we wave goodbye to the SAS truck parked by the hotel, we now are looking forward to Baltimore, Maryland and NESUG 2012.

NESUG Code Clinic
The NESUG Code Clinic was open for business in the Solutions Center and once again cured a multitude of ills. Thanks to all the clinicians and to Section Chair Elizabeth Axelrod for collecting these interesting factoids:
- The Clinic was open for a total of 12 hours.
- Each slot was staffed by 2 clinicians (so we had a total of 24 person/hours of labor).
- There were 19 clinicians who worked at least one shift.
- 4 clinicians worked multiple shifts; one clinician worked 3 shifts! (Special thanks to all the multi-shift clinicians.)
- There were 40 clients, who came to the clinic for a total of 530 minutes (~9 hours).
- The average visit length was 13.25 minutes; the median was 10 minutes.
- Each clinician saw an average of 1.3 clients
- Each shift saw an average of 3.3 clients
- The longest visit was 60 minutes, followed closely by 2 for 45 minutes.
- The shortest visit was 1 minute; the next shortest was 2 minutes.
- The Monday 2:00 slot served the most clients (6).
- The Tuesday 3:00 slot served the fewest clients (1).
- Monday afternoon had the most clients (11), and Tuesday afternoon followed with 9 clients.
- Overall, mornings had fewer visitors than afternoons (Mornings: 8, 6, 6; Afternoons: 9, 11).

Mobile App
New this year was the mobile app that was used by about half of the conference attendees (with over 14,000 page views). In addition to convenient access to presentation times, locations, and other info, the app had a messaging function allowing attendees to contact one another.
Here are some more interesting facts:
- Users of the app came from 3 continents and 6 countries (US, Canada, Singapore, China, Netherlands, Pakistan).
- Operating systems used were (iPhone 65%, Android 25%, iPod 6%, Blackberry, iPad, LG).
- 311 app pages were viewed a total of 14,655 times.
- There were 170 visits in just one day during conference.
- The sponsor list was viewed 141 times.
