Greetings Northeast SAS Users!
Conference presentations, posters, and papers have been selected and excitement is building for NESUG 2010! This year's conference features nearly 200 oral and poster presentations; sections highlighting the pharmaceutical and health care industries alongside traditional favorites like Coders' Corner and Hands-On Workshops; special emphasis on the use of social media; and of course social opportunities including a walking tour and get-togethers to relax, catch up with friends, and have some fun.
In this issue of the NESUG Express you'll find information on registration, Sunday Workshops, our special Pharma and Health Care sections, and a technical tip from one of our featured speakers, Brian Shilling. You'll also see how you can interact with conference leaders and fellow SAS users throughout the year through NESUG's new blog website and Facebook fan page. So stay in touch and I hope to see you all in November in Baltimore!

Technical Tip
from Brian Shilling
Brian Shilling is a co-author of the SAS Press book "Validating Clinical Trial Data Reporting with SAS". He will be presenting "The Top 5 Most Important Clinical SAS Programming Validation Steps" in the Pharmaceutical Applications section. The content comes from the new book mentioned above that features broad coverage of the best validation techniques using SAS 9.2.
A favorite new tip from the book:
While validating the results of laboratory data why not graph it?
SAS/GRAPH has become easier to use and more readily available with the ODS GRAPHICS or STATISTICAL options that have been added. Using these output statements can save time and energy in coding the validation of labs and give the analyst very clear and concise results of the data in a one-picture approach.
In addition, a great way to see laboratory outliers at-a-glance is to plot the normal range values for each test. By using the following code in a PROC GPLOT the analyst can create reference lines on each graph for the normal low and normal high values.
PLOT var1 * var2 / VREF = lo hi LVREF = (2 4)
The VREF option tells the PROC GPLOT what values are to be used for the low and high reference ranges. The LVREF tells PROC GPLOT what type of line to use to distinguish between the two. The result is an easy to read, at-a-glance view of which values are out of range.
