 DE LA SALLE WEEK 2012 

SMC Update, May 2012 Saint Mary's Convocation 

Brother Gustavo Ramirez Barba, FSC, Ed.D. addressed the community after receiving an honorary doctoral degree as the guest of honor at Saint Mary's annual Convocation.

 

Carnival 4 Kids 

Carnival 4 Kids Saint Mary's students hosted 195 children during the 10th Annual Carnival 4 Kids, which featured a hot-air balloon, music and games. Read the story and view a photo gallery and a wonderful video of the event. 

 

Lasallian 5-Core Dinner 

5 Core Dinner Alumni and students gathered together in the Soda Center for the 2nd Annual Lasallian 5 Core Dinner to kick off De La Salle Week on April 23. The evening included a five-course meal, each course coinciding with one of the Lasallian Core Principles. Alumni speakers included Saint Mary's College High School Counselor Amy Gonzales '97, MA '05 and Lasallian Volunteer Stephanie Carlsen '11.

College AddressPresident's State of the College Address
Brother President Ronald Gallagher recounted the College's recent accomplishments and challenges and presented his vision for the next five years. Watch the video of his speech, preceded by a light-hearted video about SMC, Gaels and the upcoming sesquicentennial.

Brother Ronald honored Saint Mary's most generous benefactors at the President's Circle Dinner on April 14 at the Claremont Hotel in Berkeley. Thanks to the College's many donors, Saint Mary's provides its students with scholarship support, outstanding library resources, athletics and recreation, mission and service opportunities and more.

Commencement Ceremonies
May 19-20
, 2012   
Join us for the Undergraduate Commencement on Saturday, May 19, and the Graduate and Professional Programs Commencement on Sunday, May 20. Poet and Bay Area sports legend Tom Meschery '61 will deliver the undergraduate address, while Jim Fruchterman, founder of Silicon Valley's Benetech, will address the graduate students. Alumni, family and friends are also invited to attend the various Cultural Graduate Celebrations beginning May 10.

Professor of the Year Honored  
Barry Eckhouse (Center) Professor Barry Eckhouse, SEBA's director of technology and online programs, was honored as the 2012 Professor of the Year and delivered a intriguing speech entitled, "Real Cats, Fake Spiders and the World of Online Learning."

Check out the poetry and artwork of the 2012 River of Words honorees. River of Words, a program of SMC's Center for Environmental Literacy, is an international art and poetry contest that inspires children to translate their observations of nature into creative expression. Read about its recent awards ceremonies.

Several members of California's Senate and Assembly met with SMC student leaders and Cal Grants recipients to discuss the need for the aid program and how it has helped students achieve their educational goals. Find out how you can help save Cal Grants.

  ATHLETIC NEWS

WCC Champions  SMC Golf Team Wins First WCC Title
 The Gaels registered the fourth-best 54-hole team score in school history with a 20-under-par 844, with Ben Geyer becoming the fourth Gael to earn medalist honors. After leading the men's golf team to the conference title, Head Coach Scott Hardy was named WCC Coach of the Year and four Saint Mary's golfers earned all-league honors.
SMC Rugby
The Gaels defeated No. 1 ranked Cal 20-18 at Pat Vincent Field on April 21. They will host the University of Utah on Saturday as they begin their quest for the D1-A National Championship.

SMC Softball The SMC softball team swept Loyola Marymount this weekend to clinch the PCSC Coastal Division Title. The Gaels will now move on to the PCSC Championship Series on May 11-12, Portland State, which clinched the PCSC Mountain Division. The team's success follows on the heels of a successful Softball Crab Feed Fundraiser on Friday, April 27.
