Saint Mary's College Announces New Athletics and Recreation Corridor

Announcing the New Athletics and Recreation Corridor 

On May 5, Brother President Ronald Gallagher, FSC, announced the naming of Saint Mary's new recreation complex and broke ground on the new home of Gael baseball.

 

The centerpiece of the Athletics and Recreation Corridor is the 52,000-square-foot Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center, named for 1937 Saint Mary's alumnus, who served as mayor of San Francisco from 1968 to 1976.

Commencement PictureCongratulations to the Class of 2011!

On May 21, more than 530 students participated in the College's 148th undergraduate commencement ceremony. Commencement speaker Sherie Swiess Dodsworth '78, CEO of Securita, Inc., was the first female president of the Alumni Association and the first Alumna of the Year award recipient.

Celebrations continued on May 22 as nearly 400 students participated in the Graduate and Professional Commencement. Sunne Wright McPeak, president of the California Emerging Technology Fund, delivered an inspiring commencement address.

 

Recognition for Service by President Obama

Saint Mary's is one of only 17 institutions nationally recognized as a finalist on the 2010 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

 

Saint Mary's Life-Changing Travel Courses  

ABC-7 / KGO-TV aired a feature story about Saint Mary's Jan Term travel courses, featuring Professors Myrna Santiago and Shawny Anderson, with cameos by SMC students and recent graduates. 

 

Theater PictureKennedy Center Theater Festival Honors 

Five members of the Saint Mary's community received distinguished achievement awards for work on recent theatrical productions, including "Angels in America" and "Sera."

 

Professor Sloane on U.S. Afghanistan Policy

The Oakland Tribune featured an Op-Ed by Politics Professor Stephen Sloane about the need to rethink U.S. military policy in the wake of the elimination of Osama bin Laden.

 

Professor Ahmed Referenced as Notable Middle East Analyst

The Los Angeles Times included observations of Politics Professor Hisham Ahmed among other notable Middle East analysts in a story about Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

  

Seniors Celebrate at Zero Year Reunion 

This spring, 280 seniors from the Class of 2011 donated more than $4,400 - a record 54% class participation! The Senior Gift Campaign finished the year by celebrating their success at Zero Year Reunion, where they were officially welcomed into the Alumni Association.

 

Gaels in WineGaels in Wine Gathered at Peju Province

Last month, more than 30 members of the Gaels in Wine Alumni Chapter gathered at Peju Province Winery in Rutherford for a tour, barrel tasting, picnic and sampling of wines from member wineries. The chapter will be well represented at the Summer Wine Festival on campus on August 14.

  

Clars Auction to Benefit the Hearst Art Gallery 

On Saturday and Sunday, September 10-11, join alumni and friends at Clars Auction House in Oakland, featuring artwork and fine wines. Please consider donating an item or two to the auction, as we are relying on the generosity of our donors to make this event a success. Items must be received by July 1.

Join fellow alumni on a memorable journey through Ireland from October 23 to November 1, 2011. Explore Dublin, Killarney and Galway, including highlights of the Aran Islands, Blarney Castle and the National Library. Co-sponsored by the Alumni Office and Lifelong Learning.

Pay a visit to the Hearst Art Gallery by June 19 to check out Gift of the Gods: Exploring Maize, Culture and Indigenous Art in the Americas. Up next is Pam Glover: A Life in Art, from July 6 to September 11. The Hearst Art Gallery is honored to be a Blue Star Museum.

Gaels Close the Season on Guisto Field

Guisto Field 

The Gaels deafeated UC Davis, 8-2, in the final game on Louis Guisto Field, which originally opened in the 1928-29 school year. The new baseball facility will open for the 2011 season.

 

Gael Awards ShowGaels Hand Out Annual Awards

Saint Mary's athletic department honored their outstanding student-athletes and performances of the year at the annual Gael Awards Show in May.

 

Volleyball Players Heading to Europe

Sophomores Jordan Shaw and Natalie Loos have been invited to the USA Women's A2 team that will tour Europe this summer. They are projected to play in 10 matches, including three against Great Britain's national team.

More than 200 golfers attended the Southern and Northern California golf tournaments this spring, raising more than $90,000 for the Gael Athletic Fund.

 

High APR Figures for Student-Athletes

Student-athletes at Saint Mary's continue to rank among the best on the West Coast for academic performance, according to the Academic Progress Rates by the NCAA.

 

5th Quarter: A Football Alumni Picnic

The Saint Mary's College Football Alumni Chapter presents the 5th Quarter Family Picnic honoring Coach Jim McDonald. Join us on Saturday, July 30, for a fun picnic featuring live music, great food and special guests.

 

Women's Soccer Kick-Off

Join us on Saturday, August 13, to meet the 2011 women's soccer team and coaches and kick off the upcoming season.

 

11th Annual Tucci Golf Party

Save the date for this annual golf party on Friday, September 30, at Boundary Oak Golf Course in Walnut Creek, CA. Proceeds benefit the Frank Tucci Endowment, supporting the SMC Rugby Team.
