 COMMENCEMENT SPOTLIGHT

Commencement Ceremonies: May 21-22 

Join us for the 148th Undergraduate Commencement on Saturday, May 21, and the Graduate and Professional Programs Commencement on Sunday, May 22.

 

Sherie DodsworthEntrepreneur and California broadband advocate Sherie Swiess Dodsworth '78 will deliver the undergraduate address, while Sunne Wright McPeak, president and CEO of the California Emerging Technology Fund, will address the graduate students.

 

Cultural Graduate Celebrations

Alumni are also invited to attend the various Cultural Graduate Celebrations beginning May 12.

SMC Named a Top "Green" College   

Saint Mary's was named by the Princeton Review as one of the top environmentally responsible colleges in the U.S. and Canada for the second consecutive year.

Superior General Visits Saint Mary's 

Superior General Brother Alvaro Rodriguez Echeverria, FSC, head of the international Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, spoke with the community about the Lasallian mission.  

 

Carl GuarneriKQED and NBC Interview Professor Carl Guarneri on Civil War Anniversary   

Saint Mary's professor Carl Guarneri was interviewed about the 150th anniversary and California's role in the Civil War on KQED, as well as Bay Area's connection to the war by NBC Bay Area News.  

 

Stephen SloaneProfessor of the Year Honored

Politics Professor Stephen Sloane, who has taught at Saint Mary's since 1976, was honored as the 2011 Professor of the Year and delivered an entertaining speech entitled, "I Am the Luckiest Man in the World."

 

Bay Area News Group Spotlights Graduate Business Program

Professor and Associate Dean for the Graduate Business Program Guido Krickx was interviewed about the College's offerings and its focus on global awareness, responsible business and societal needs.

Catholic Voice captured the atmosphere and spirit of SMC's long-running fun and games outreach initiative for the College's Community Partners.

 

Kristina Lovato-HermannYoung Graduates Share Social Justice Work

Latina alumnae, including Kristina Lovato-Hermann '00, Laura Nunez-Galleno '01, Vanessa Cornejo '02 MA '06 and Nora Garcia '09, recently shared their experiences working in the social justice field and how Saint Mary's shaped their future.

  

The Courage to Change Breakfast Roundtable

On Tuesday, May 3, at 8 a.m., the Saint Mary's College Leadership Center and Women in Philanthropy present a special breakfast roundtable honoring influential alumna Dr. Patricia Castaneda-Davis MBA '09. $25 per person; RSVP online.

Join us on Tuesday, May 3, at 4:30 p.m., to hear author and historian Stephanie Coontz discuss her recent book, "A Strange Stirring: The Feminine Mystique and American Women at the Dawn of the 1960s." Book signing to follow.

 

56th Annual EastBay Scholarship Fund Dinner

Join us this Wednesday, May 4, at the Claremont Country Club for this annual fundraiser featuring Professor Kevin Starr of the University of Southern California, California State Librarian Emeritus and 2006 National Humanities Medal honoree.

 

Asian Cultural Night

Join us on Thurday, May 5, for an evening of cultural expressions through food, dance, spoken word, skits and other creative media. $5 per person through May 2; $10 thereafter.

The Saint Mary's College Women in Philanthropy Committee invite you to share in an afternoon brunch and conversation with Dr. Nanette Mickiewicz on Sunday, May 15. Explore her journey in philanthropy and hear from special alumnae guests and founders of Just Hearts.

 

Performing ArtsSpring Dance and Music Performances  

The SMC Dance Company Faculty presents "A Random Plate of Delciousness" from May 5-7, which celebrates a rich diversity of dance styles with a special appearance by alumna Megan Opel '05. Musical performances include the Choir's Spring Concert, Diablo Wind Symphony, the Chamber Musicians' Spring Concert and the Contra Costa Chamber Orchestra.  

 

Exploring Maize at the Hearst Art Gallery

Visit the Hearst Art Gallery through June 19 to see its latest exhibit, "Gift of the Gods: Exploring Maize, Culture and Indigenous Art in the Americas."

 

Reunion Weekend is July 15-17!

Alumni classes of '36, '41, '46, '51, '56, '61, '66, '71, '76, '81, '86, '91, '96, '01 and '06 are invited back to campus for a weekend of frivolity and festivities.

 

Summer Wine Festival7th Annual Summer Wine Festival

Mark your calendar and plan to join us for an afternoon of wine tasting, delicious appetizers and fun on Sunday, August 14. Tickets are $35 per person and are available online now. 

ATHLETIC NEWS & EVENTS

Senior women's tennis player Alex Poorta made history by being the first Saint Mary's tennis player to win this prestigious award. 
  
Now in his third season, Saint Mary's women's soccer assistant coach Scott Alexander has been promoted to the associate coach position. 
  
Jillian Chong and Mariah Walk of the lacrosse team earned spots on the 2011 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Conference Team. The sophomore duo from Washington tied for the team lead with 35 points each in 15 games.
  

Join us on Saturday, May 7, for a softball team fundraiser in the Redwood Grove. Festivities include a social, silent auction and dinner. Tickets are $50 per person; RSVP online.

  

On May 7, the women's volleyball team will host a clinic as part of the Special Olympics' East Bay Volleyball Regional.

 

Scott HardyGolf Coach Wins NCGA Public Links Title 

Saint Mary's golf coach Scott Hardy successfully defended his title at the 46th annual NCGA Public Links Championship at Spyglass Hill Golf Course.
