New Kalmanovitz School of Education Dean Named

Following a highly competitive national search, Professor Phyllis Metcalf-Turner has been appointed dean of the Kalmanovitz School of Education, effective June 15.

Kevin Quigley, head of the Peace Corps Association, spent a week on campus leading up to the Peace Corp's 50th anniversary.

Gaelic Green Thumbs to Grow Gourds and Pumpkins

Alumni living in Contra Costa County are being asked to assist the Legacy Garden with the planting of seeds to grow gourds and pumpkins in their individual gardens. Come October, alumni can deliver their harvest to campus for sale; net proceeds will benefit the Saint Mary's College Legacy Garden. 2nd Annual Wo/men's Conference

Join the College community for The Crossroads of Social Change, March 4-5. Participants will examine the intersection of race, class, gender and sexual orientation as they pertain to social justice, social change and leadership.

 

Think Globally: Eradicating Poverty Around the World

Join us on March 14 for a panel of representatives from international non profits that address issues of poverty around the globe. Organizations include Kiva, Bead for Life and Just Hearts.

 

St. Patrick's Day LuncheonAnnual Saint Patrick's Day Luncheon

The tradition - and rivalry - continues! On March 17, join fellow Sacramento-area Gaels at this annual luncheon with SCU Broncos and USF Dons at the Dante Club. $25 per person includes a served lunch.

 

Re-enactment and Living History Activities

On March 19, 12-4 p.m., join us for an incredible Civil War re-enactment as part of the final day of the Lee and Grant exhibit in the Hearst Art Gallery at Saint Mary's.

On March 22, gather with Gaels for a night of laughter, libations and literature with acclaimed Saint Mary's author, Mary Volmer '01, MFA '05, as she shares exerpts from her debut novel Crown of Dust. $20 per person includes hors d'oeurves and hosted bar.

Saint Mary's Earns WCC Coach and Player of the Year 

WCC Coach and Player of the Year

For the first time in 52 years, the West Coast Conference Coach and Player of the Year hail from Saint Mary's. Coach Randy Bennett was named WCC Coach of the Year, while senior guard Mickey McConnell was honored as Player of the Year. In 1958-59, Coach Jim Weaver and LaRoy Doss earned the top individual honors.  

 

WCC TitleA Great Season for Men's and Women's Basketball

With an 83-69 victory over Portland on Saturday, the men's basketball team secured a share (with Gonzaga) of the regular season WCC championship title. This was the Gaels' first regular season title in 14 years and sets the stage for their return to action on Sunday when they travel to Las Vegas for the annual WCC Tournament as the top seed. Scheduled for a 5 p.m. tipoff at Orleans Arena, the game will be televised live by ESPN2.

 

The Saint Mary's women's basketball team placed three student-athletes on the West Coast Conference All-Conference Teams. Louella Tomlinson and Jasmine Smith earned WCC First Team honors, while Danielle Mauldin made the All-Freshmen team. Saint Mary's is back in action at the Women's WCC Tournament as the No. 2 seed. The Gaels will play Sunday at approximately 1:30 p.m. in a semifinal match-up at The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

Baseball Gears Up For Dodgertown Classic

From March 11-13, the Gaels will participate in the 2011 Dodgertown Classic in Los Angeles. The Gaels will take on USC (March 11), UCLA (March 12) and Georgia (March 13) at Dodger Stadium.  

 

Annual Car Drawing a Big Success

The 34th Annual Car Drawing presented by Steadauto.com raised more than $50,000 for the Gael Athletic Fund and student-athlete scholarships. Robert Enright, whose family has participated in the drawing for many years, won the grand prize.

 

SMC Night with the Golden State Warriors

On April 13, join us at Oracle Arena as the Golden State Warriors host the Portland Trailblazers. Watch Monta Ellis, Stephen Curry and David Lee take on Saint Mary's own Patty Mills and the Trailblazers. Discounted tickets are available for alumni.

Save the date for the 32nd Gael Golf Classic at Blackhawk Country Club in Danville, California. Join us for an afternoon of golf and lunch, followed by an awards dinner and auction. Proceeds benefit SMC Athletics.
