Celebrating 40 Years of Women at SMC
Celebrating 40 Years of Women at SMC
This fall marks 40 years since Saint Mary's College went co-ed in 1970. In honor of this anniversary, the Women in Philanthropy Committee will recognize the 40 most influential female graduates. The committee is seeking nominations of women who are role models because of their outstanding leadership, achievement and service. An event to honor the 40 women will be held in November.
The deadline to submit a nomination is June 30, 2010.

The spring 2010 issue of the magazine themed "On Fire" is now online. Highlights include a spread on the men's basketball team, a faculty profile on Lino Rivera, the divine symbol of fire, and the latest Gael Glimpses.

2010 Commencement2010 Commencement Ceremonies
Nearly 550 seniors graduated in the 147th undergraduate commencement at Saint Mary's College on May 22, which featured addresses by labor leader Maria Elena Durazo '75 and valedictorian Alex Branch '10.
On May 23, about 240 people received graduate degrees from programs in the School of Liberal Arts and the Kalmanovitz School of Education. State schools Superintendent Jack O'Connell gave their commencement address. Read more.

Softball Team Wins PCSC Championship
Softball Wins PCSC Championship
The women's softball team won the PCSC Championship, earning them their first trip to the NCAA Tournament. The team lost to Fresno and UCLA in the tournament's Los Angeles Regional.

Men's Basketball Honored at State CapitolMen's Basketball Honored in State Capitol
Head coach Randy Bennett and the 2009-2010 team were honored on the floor of the California Senate and Assembly on May 6 for their remarkable season. The Gaels were the only California men's basketball team to advance to the NCAA Tournament's Sweet Sixteen.

Golf Classics Raise Record FundsGolf Classics Raise Record Funds for Athletic Scholarships
This spring, the Southern and Northern California Gael Golf Classic Tournaments both set records for net proceeds that benefit the Gael Athletic Fund and student-athlete scholarships. More than $105,000 was raised and 268 golfers participated.

Gael Award ShowStudent Athletes Honored at Awards Banquet
The Saint Mary's athletics department honored athletes at the 9th Annual Gael Award Show on May 13. Player of the Year awards were given to Omar Samhan '10 and Alita Fisher '10; the men's golf team was awarded top GPA in the department; and rower Jillian Parlee '11 was recognized for her academic achievement.

Eran GanotRandy Bennett Announces New Hire
Randy Bennett announced that Eran Ganot will join the men's basketball coaching staff, following the departure of Kyle Smith to Columbia University for the head coach position. Ganot begins his second stint with the Gaels on June 1.
