Snow at SMC
Campus Becomes Winter Wonderland in December
Saint Mary's was turned into a winter wonderland on Dec. 7 when the campus was blanketed in snow. The event was captured in photos taken by students and staff as well as on film in a video by senior Bryan Navarro, which has gotten more than 18,000 views on YouTube and was on the sfgate.com home page.

Phone booth re-enactmentPhone Booth Stuffing Re-Enactment Earns Place in Parade Magazine's Quirkiest Stories of 2009
The 50th anniversary re-enactment of the famous phone booth stuffing prank at Saint Mary's College earned a place in Parade magazine's Dec. 27 round-up of the quirkiest stories of 2009. In March 2009, current students tried to top the record of 22 SMC students in one phone booth. They tied the record in several attempts, which ended when a plexiglass panel in the booth broke. In attendance were several men involved in the original 1959 stuffing, and the photographer, Joe Munroe, whose iconic photo ran in Life magazine and was named one of the top photos of the 20th century.

Professor Brenda Hillman Named Among the
50 Most Inspiring Authors in the World
In its most recent issue, Poets and Writers names Saint Mary's English and MFA professor Brenda Hillman one of the 50 most inspiring authors in the world. The publication says Hillman "reminds us that the language we use when ordering a sandwich is also the language we use to make art. Her environmental concerns prove writers can offer more than just aesthetic pleasure."

Michael McKeonMichael McKeon Named Dean of Admissions
Michael McKeon has been appointed Dean of Admissions for Saint Mary's College and his appointment will begin March 1, 2010. McKeon has more than 30 years of experience in college admissions at public and private institutions. He was most recently dean of admissions at Seattle University, where he served for the past 14 years.

The Hearst Art Gallery of Saint Mary's College is pleased to announce the first retrospective of a monumental symbolic realist who was an influential teacher of artists in the Bay Area for 40 years, opening January 17 and continuing through Sunday, March 17.

Former Gael Ruggers Receive Top Honors
Rugby Magazine's Alex Goff has named his performers of the year and former Gaels Kevin Swiryn '07 and Volney Rouse '06 are his choice for two top awards. Swiryn was named 7s Player of the Year and Rouse was touted as Domestic Performer of the Year.

Patrick MillsPatrick Mills Recalled by Trailblazers
In two games since being assigned to the Idaho Stampede on Dec. 29, Patrick Mills posted averages of 30.0 points and 7.5 assists. On Sunday, January 2, Mills was recalled to the Portland Trailblazers, as announced by Trailblazer General Manager Kevin Pritchard on Sunday, and played in the January 4 game against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Former Gael Mark Teahen Receives 2009 Hutch Award

Former Saint Mary's baseball player Mark Teahen has won the 2009 Hutch Award, as announced by The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Teahen will receive the award on January 27, 2010 in Seattle for his efforts on and off the field.

Saint Mary's First Baseman Troy Channing Named to Louisville Sluggers Pre-Season All-American Team
The 2010 Louisville Slugger pre-season All-American baseball teams, selected by Collegiate Baseball newspaper, features a who's who of NCAA Division I baseball players.  Saint Mary's first baseman Troy Channing has been named to the second team.
