St. Thomas Aquinas College President, SMC Alumnus Dies
Dr. Thomas E. Dillon '68, the president of Thomas Aquinas College in Santa
Paula, California, was killed in an automobile accident in Ireland on
April 15. He was traveling on behalf of the college when the accident occurred.

College Receives NSF Grant and Hearst Scholarship AwardThe National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded the College a one-year $117,000 grant for undergraduate research,
supporting the College's new initiative: Bay Bridge Research Experiences for
Undergraduates (REU). The College has also received $100,000 in scholarship money from the William Randolph Hearst Foundations.

Student Wins Fulbright Award
Whitney Medved, a 21-year old SMC English major, was awarded a Fulbright Grant as an English
teaching assistant She will teach at the Evanjelické Gymnázium, a Lutheran
English High School in the town of Tisovec.

College Honors Lasallian Educator Gery ShortOutstanding Lasallian educator Gery Short, M. Div, M.A., M.S. received an
honorary doctoral degree as the guest of honor at Saint Mary's College of
California's annual De La Salle Week Convocation on April 29. He is one of the leaders and most experienced lay colleagues among
the Christian Brothers and Lasallian schools in the country.

54th Annual East Bay Scholarship Fund DinnerJoin other alumni at the Claremont Country Club on May 6 at the East Bay Scholarship Fund Dinner. The Fund, established by Brother Thomas Levi in 1955, helps students from Alameda and Contra Costa counties attend SMC.
