Undergraduate and Graduate Commencements This Month
The 146th undergraduate commencement ceremony featuring alumnus Jim Guyette '67 as the speaker will be May 23. The graduate programs ceremony, with former state controller Steve Westly as the speaker May 24.

St. Thomas Aquinas College President, SMC Alumnus Dies

Dr. Thomas E. Dillon '68Dr. Thomas E. Dillon '68, the president of Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, California, was killed in an automobile accident in Ireland on April 15. He was traveling on behalf of the college when the accident occurred.

College Receives NSF Grant and Hearst Scholarship Award
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded the College a one-year $117,000 grant for undergraduate research, supporting the College's new initiative: Bay Bridge Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU). The College has also received $100,000 in scholarship money from the William Randolph Hearst Foundations.

Student Wins Fulbright Award
Whitney MedvedWhitney Medved, a 21-year old SMC English major, was awarded a Fulbright Grant as an English teaching assistant She will teach at the Evanjelické Gymnázium, a Lutheran English High School in the town of Tisovec.

College Honors Lasallian Educator Gery Short
Outstanding Lasallian educator Gery Short, M. Div, M.A., M.S. received an honorary doctoral degree as the guest of honor at Saint Mary's College of California's annual De La Salle Week Convocation on April 29. He is one of the leaders and most experienced lay colleagues among the Christian Brothers and Lasallian schools in the country.

54th Annual East Bay Scholarship Fund Dinner
Join other alumni at the Claremont Country Club on May 6 at the East Bay Scholarship Fund Dinner. The Fund, established by Brother Thomas Levi in 1955, helps students from Alameda and Contra Costa counties attend SMC.

Men's rugby vs. Army
Rugby Finishes Season in Round of Sixteen
Men's rugby was knocked out of the playoffs in the Round of Sixteen after a loss to Army on April 18. The Gaels finished one of the most successful seasons on record at 21-2-1.

Patty Mills Declares for the NBA Draft
Sophomore Patrick Mills announced in April that he will enter his name into the National Basketball Association June draft. Mills will not hire an agent, leaving open his option to return to Saint Mary's next season.

Freshman Breaks Single Season Home Run Record
Troy ChanningWith 11 games left to play, Troy Channing '12 broke the SMC single season home record by hitting a grand slam against LMU on April 24 for his 16th of the season. He followed up by hitting two more the next day.

Women's Basketball Signs Another Aussie
Women's basketball head coach Paul Thomas announced the signing of Kate Gaze, an Australian guard from New South Wales. Gaze joins fellow Aussie Louella Tomlinson on the Gael squad, and comes to Saint Mary's from the Australian Institute of Sport.
