Game Expected to be a Sell Out
Come home to Saint Mary's on Jan. 17 as we celebrate everything that is great about being a Gael. The day will begin with the Annual Alumni Awards Luncheon, followed by Mass and a pre-game rally in the Soda Center before the men's basketball team takes on the Pepperdine Waves.

Alumni and friends are invited to get on board the 2nd Annual Gaels Gone Wild Alumni Spring Break Cruise to Ensenada, Mexico. The 3-day Baja cruise on Carnival Cruise Lines will depart from San Diego on April 23, 2009.

Jerry Fitzpatrick '42Longtime Regent Jerry Fitzpatrick '42 Dies
F. Gerard "Jerry" Fitzpatrick '42, a legendary figure at Saint Mary's College and in Contra Costa County for more than six decades, passed away on Dec. 30. He was 89.

The College invested in three new commercials that will be seen during televised basketball games this season. Two of the commercials feature SMC athletes.

In 2009, the Jan Term Speaker Series at Saint Mary's College features Bill Ayers and four other provocative speakers throughout the month.

Macken Debate Team Achieves National Ranking
At midseason, the National Parliamentary Debate Association ranks SMC's Macken Debate Team 19th out of 195 participating colleges and universities. This is the highest ranking in the young team's history and places it ahead of other California colleges, including UC Berkeley, UCLA and Pepperdine.

Student working on a farm in Salinas, CAStudents Examine Migrant Labor Issues
As part of the office of Mission and Ministry's immersion programs, 19 students traveled to Salinas to get a sampling of life for migrant farm workers.

Brother President Ronald Gallagher and special assistant Brother Dominic Berardelli traveled to the Philippines and were greeted by the first international SMC alumni chapter.

CLAM Event for January
The Committee for Lectures, Art and Music brings one of the world's preeminent jazz innovators, trombonist Steve Turre, and his quartet to Saint Mary's College for an evening of unparalleled entertainment. A member of the Saturday Night Live Band since 1984, Turre teaches at Juilliard and maintains an active international touring schedule.

Diamon Simpson broke the all-time rebounding record and was named Player of the Week twice in Dec.
Men's Basketball is Making Some Noise
The team enters conference play with a record of 13-1 and a national ranking of 29 in the ESPN/USA Today poll. Forward Diamon Simpson '09 broke the all-time SMC rebounding record on Friday and was named WCC Player of the Week twice in the month of December. Patty Mills '11 and Omar Samhan '10 rounded out the month for the Gaels by also receiving that same honor. On the women's side, Louella Tomlinson '11 was named WCC Co-Player of the Week on Dec. 29. The women's team will enter conference play with a 4-8 record.

Women's Volleyball lost to New Mexico State in the first round of the NCAA tournamentVolleyball Loses in First Round of NCAAs
The women's team finished a strong season with a record of 20-8, losing to New Mexico State in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Look for them to be competitive again next year as incoming freshman Lauren Corp was named Gatorade California Volleyball Player of the Year.

Junior Named to Baseball Player of The Year Watch List
Kyle Jensen '10 has been named to the 2009 Brooks Wallace Player of the Year pre-season watch list. The Wallace Award is presented annually to the nation's top collegiate baseball player in conjunction with the College Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. Jensen is one of 64 players to be named to the pre-season watch list.
