Midknight Madness New Mascot Revealed
More than 1,000 students were on hand on Oct. 22 for a basketball preview that included contests, player introductions and the official unveiling of the new College mascot. The Athletic Department is holding a competition through Nov. 7 to name the mascot
Autumn Magazine Online
The latest issue of Saint Mary's magazine is now online. Read about alumni who are "paying it forward," how SMC and other Catholic colleges are helping minority students succeed and of course check out a new batch of Gael Glimpses.
Alumni Award Winners Announced
This year's recipients will be honored at Gaelfest for their outstanding work in furthering the mission of the College. The winners are George Schmitt '65 (Alumnus of the Year), Robert Kozlowski '50 (Signum Fidei), Dr. John Dennis (De La Salle Award posthumously), Mike Johnson '87 (Certificate of Merit) and Erin Gilbert '02 (G.O.L.D. Award).
Dinner Dance in Support of Rugby
Come out and cheer for the men's rugby squad at the Pat Vincent Cup on Saturday, Nov. 22, and then cruise over to the Soda Center for a special dinner and dance featuring Butch Whacks and the Glass Packs. All proceeds from the event will go to the rugby fund.
Alumni Diversity Celebration Come to campus on Nov. 8 as we celebrate diversity and honor Professors Mary McCall and Paul Giurlanda and Brother Michael Avila '70 for their work and influence in diversity issues at SMC.

This month the School of Economics and Business Administration will host a seminar led by Rob Black, TV personality and financial advisor, on investing advice in the current economic climate. Alumni are invited to this free event.
Gael Glimpse Contest Winner
Thanks to all the alumni who submitted a Gael Glimpse for the upcoming Saint Mary's magazine. All submissions were entered into a drawing for two tickets to Gaelfest, including the men's basketball game vs. Pepperdine on Jan. 17. Congratulations to Tim Ridosh '03, the contest winner.

During his Oct. 22 visit to Saint Mary's, UC Berkeley professor and Omnivore's Dilemma author Michael Pollan revealed truths about the food industry's nutritional claims.
Blue Mass
On Oct. 2, a special Mass for the Feast of Guardian Angels was celebrated for East Bay first responders. About 80 law enforcement, firefighting and ambulance personnel were on hand.
Professor Wins Prestigious Whiting Writers' Award
Lysley Tenorio, associate professor of English at Saint Mary's College of California, was named a recipient of the 2008 Whiting Writers' Award. Tenorio, who received the award in New York City on Oct. 29, is one of 10 emerging writers of exceptional talent and promise to receive the prize of $50,000 this year.
Panel Discusses Economic Crisis
Professors from the School of Economics and Business Administration had a panel discussion this month on the current economic crisis.
Graduate Business Commencement
The 65th commencement ceremony for Graduate Business was Oct. 12, with 79 MBA graduates (including 10 from the Australia program) and 20 graduates from the Financial Analysis and Investment Management program. Alumni speaker Chance Curtiss '03 told the graduates "many of the most important decisions were made networking at lunch and dinners--yet there's no MBA class on networking. Consider the SMC graduate business alumni that missing class--and tuition is free."
Presidential historian Richard Reeves visited campus and talked to more than 200 students and faculty about the current race for the White House, including his thoughts on the strengths and weaknesses of each candidate.
"The Bachelor" Visits SMC
U.S. Navy medical recruiter Lt. Andy Baldwin, M.D., recent star of ABC's "The Bachelor," was on hand during a career fair to talk with students about working in the field of military medicine.
Episcopal Lecture Series Postponed
The Episcopal Lecture from Bishop John Cummins scheduled for Nov. 8 has been moved to next year so that the content of a major Vatican conference titled "Biological Evolution: Facts and Theories" (Mar. 7-9) can be discussed. More information to follow. | |

Men's and Women's Basketball Start Season Play
The women's basketball team will host Australia's Showtime Basketball on Friday, Nov. 7 and then play San Francisco State on Sunday, Nov. 9. The preseason polls picked the team to finish fourth in the conference.
Men's basketball will open against Seattle Pacific at home on Friday, Nov. 14 and then play Fresno State in a game that will be nationally televised on ESPN on Monday, Nov. 17 at 11 p.m. The preseason polls picked the team to finish second in the conference.
Women's Volleyball Sweeps Santa Clara
The team defeated No. 23 Santa Clara 3-0 at home. It was their second win over a ranked opponent this season. Their overall record now stands at 14-6.
Cross Country Competes at the WCC Championships Mario Mendoza '09 capped off his career with a fourth-place finish at the WCC Championships this weekend, earning him a first-team all-conference selection. Karrie Hagedorn '09 was the top women's runner, finishing 13th and receiving a conference honorable mention. Read more.
Downtown San Francisco Basketball Preview Lunch
Limited spots remain for the San Francisco Basketball Preview Lunch located at the Port Conference Room of the Ferry Building in San Francisco, beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Wed., Nov. 5. The event, hosted by Pete Rossi '79 of Stone & Youngberg and SMC Athletics, will feature men's and women's basketball coaches, Randy Bennett and Paul Thomas, as they preview their upcoming seasons.
