Reunion Weekend 2008

Hundreds Expected for this Year's Event
The classes of '58, '63, '68, '73, '83, '88, '93. '98 and '03 are invited back to campus for the annual Reunion Weekend on July 18-20. Individual class events will be happening on campus and around the East Bay on Friday. Saturday will feature a family barbecue, Mass, a cocktail hour hosted by Brother President Ronald Gallagher, dinner and a dance featuring "Diamond" Dave Hosley. The SMC Pub will be open during the afternoon. Alumni can even stay in the dorms.
Alumnus Killed in Plane Crash
Erik Nunn '02 EE, a candidate for Contra Costa County supervisor, died along with his wife and another couple while flying home from Las Vegas on June 28. The crash was covered by the San Francisco Chronicle.

Janine Ogando '89 (pictured) will serve as the 2008-09 Alumni Association president, and four alumni have joined the board of directors. Erin Burke '89, Kate Koens '05, David Johnson '84 and Rushell Gordon '96 will bring their professional expertise to the board.

Come out to Sierra Sunset, the Lake Tahoe estate of alumnus George Schmitt '65, from noon to 3 p.m. on Aug. 9 for great food, wonderful views, and first-class entertainment. The property was once used to film the opening scene of "Bonanza." Proceeds from this annual alumni favorite go to the Northern Nevada scholarship.
 
 
Mary Doyle SpringerLongtime Professor Mary Doyle Springer Dies
Mary Doyle Springer, the College's first tenured woman professor and a revered English and Seminar instructor for close to 40 years, passed away on June 21 at age 89. 
 
Don Perata Meet and Greet
Sacramento area alumni are invited to the state Capitol for a special reception on Wednesday, Aug. 20 with State Senate Pro Tem and SMC alumnus Don Perata '67.
 
Carl Sammons paintingCarl Sammons Exhibit
Carl Sammons, a prolific plein air artist who gained fame as a Bay Area landscape painter, is featured in an exhibit of rarely seen works at the Hearst Art Gallery of Saint Mary's College from July 12 through Sept. 21. 
 
Center for Engaged Religious Pluralism Announced
Featured in the Contra Costa Times and the San Jose Mercury News, the College's new center will make policy recommendations, analyze issues involving faith in the public square and develop student interfaith programs.
 
New Staff Member for MBA Alumni
Jackie Williams has been hired to fill the new position of director of recruitment and alumni outreach for the Graduate Business department. Part of her role will be to help plan and promote events and benefits for graduate business alumni.

Patty MillsPatrick Mills Going for the Gold
Sophomore Patty Mills is only a few days away from being officially named to the Australian national team for the Olympics. Coming off the bench, he averaged the second-most points scored for the club in a three-game series vs. Iran, and he led the team in scoring vs. New Zealand on Thursday. The final roster will be announced by July 4. Kyle JensenBaseball Player Named All-American
After a record breaking season, sophomore Kyle Jensen was named the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings West Region First Team, and the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division I All-American Second Team

New Athletic Web Site
The Athletic Department announced that it will switch its official online site host to JUMP TV effective July 2, 2008. The athletic web address will remain SMCGaels.com, but those fans who have bookmarked a variation of the url (smcgaels.cstv.com, for example) must change it to SMCGaels.com to get to the new official site..
 
Four Rugby Players Named All-American
Conor Coyne, Kevin Swiryn, Chad Clark and Brendan O'Meara were named 2008 Collegiate All-Americans. Matt Leatherby was given an honorable mention.  
 
Mike McRae Named All-American
Senior golfer Mike McRae was named a Ping All-America Honorable Mention in June. He is the first golfer in the history of SMC ever to receive national recognition.
 
Basketball Season Tickets on Sale Now
The ticket office is now offering alumni the opportunity to purchase men's and women's basketball season tickets before they are made available to the general public. The tickets will go on sale to the public starting Thursday, July 3, 2008. With only 81 premium seats remaining for the men it is important that you call the (925) 631-GOTx to reserve your seats today.
 
Alumni Gael Force Season Ticket Package
The classes of 2007 and 2008 qualify to purchase full season ticket plans for the low price of $60 in the alumni Gael Force section. These seats are located in the lower section of the pavilion right across from the Saint Mary's bench.
