Welcome New Alumni
Commencement Ceremonies Celebrate Achievement
Thousands of family and friends overcame the cool weather to watch NBC morning news anchor Laura Garcia-Canon '91 give the commencement speech before 645 new members of the alumni association at the 145th undergraduate graduation ceremony on Saturday. The graduate program ceremony followed on Sunday in McKeon Pavilion before a packed house.
Christian Brothers University President Dies in Car Accident Brother Vincent Malham, FSC, the president of Christian Brothers University in Tennessee, died on May 2 in a car accident. Brother Vincent also served as a trustee at Saint Mary's College. SMC Brother President Ronald Gallagher worked alongside Brother Vincent during his time at Bethlehem University.
May Magazine Now Online
The latest edition of the Saint Mary's magazine, featuring stories about alumni in the military, rugby coach Tim O'Brien, a eulogy to the late Dr. John Dennis and the latest Gael Glimpses, is now online. The web version of the magazine includes additional stories and photos.
Enrollment Statistics
Michael Beseda '79, vice president for college communications and vice provost for enrollment, reports that 2008-2009 is a record year for incoming freshmen enrollment deposits and that 41 percent of those deposits come from students of color. Read more.
Take Me Out to the Ball Game
 Join other Gaels on June 29 at McAfee Coliseum for the battle of the bay as the Oakland A's square off against the San Francisco Giants. Event price includes an alumni tailgate party and seats in the lower-reserved outfield section.

State of the Economy Conference
The College hosted the annual State of the Economy Conference on May 9 with a theme of "Education's Role in Regional Success."
Survey Winner
Saint Mary's magazine editor Erin Hallissy would like to extend her thanks to the large number of alumni who participated in the magazine survey. After submitting their surveys, Mary Stephens '04 and Richard Masar '61 won two tickets each to see the men's basketball team take on Gonzaga next season in McKeon Pavilion. The survey results will be made public soon.
Assistant VP for Communications Announced
 Elizabeth Smith is the new AVP for College Communications starting on June 23. Smith most recently has been the director of marketing communications at UC Davis and has also worked at Northwestern University.
Northern California Gael Classic Invitational Golf Tournament
Save the date for Monday, September 8, 2008 at Discovery Bay Country Club in Byron, CA for a day of golf and fun. The four-person scramble format will begin at 10:30 am with a shotgun start. Check-in begins at 9:00 am and the day concludes with an Award Dinner, Prize Drawing and Auction at 5:00 pm.
Women in Philanthropy Event Correction The May edition of the e-newsletter incorrectly listed the location and date of the Women in Philanthropy wine tasting event. It was on April 20 at the home of regent Sandi Feaster in Half Moon Bay.

Men's Golf in the NCAAs
After a seventh-place finish in the NCAA Western Regional, the men's golf team pitted their skills against 29 other schools in the NCAA national tournament in West Lafayette, Ind. Senior Mike McRae (who also made it through the first round of U.S. Open qualifiers) tied for second place in individual play at the regional round. The team finished the season ranked No. 30 in the country.
Rugby Finishes No. 2 in the Country
After a narrow loss to Cal, the men's rugby squad ended the season ranked No. 2. This marks the end of the most successful season in rugby history. Three players were named as All-Americans. Head coach Tim O'Brien is the subject of a feature article in the most recent issue of Saint Mary's magazine.
Former Rowing Coach Dies
Giancarlo Trevisan, who coached men's crew from 1977 to 1999, passed away on May 13, 2008. He was inducted into the Saint Mary's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006.
Saint Mary's to Host USA Women's Olympic Volleyball TeamThe SMC volleyball team will host the USA Women's Olympic team on Wednesday, July 30 for a send-off dinner prior to their departure for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China. USA Volleyball fans will receive a unique opportunity to show support and interact with Team USA as it heads to China in search of a medal. Read more. Four Gael Baseball Stars Honored with WCC RecognitionsAt the end of the season four players received All-Conference Honors. Sophomore left fielder Kyle Jensen, who was a unanimous selection, and junior shortstop Joel Staples were named to the All-WCC team. Senior Brian Hawkins was named All-WCC Honorable Mention, and freshman Justin Fazio was named to the All-Freshman Team. Learn more.
Discounted Basketball Season Tickets for Classes of 2008 and 2007For their first two years after graduation, students can purchase season tickets for only $60 for the 2008-09 season. Only 200 of these seats will be held, and will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. A maximum of two seats will be allowed per graduate.
