"Dr. D" Remembered

Hundreds Gather on Campus for Memorial

Alumni, students, faculty, staff, family and friends were present for the memorial Mass celebrating the life and work of John Dennis, affectionately known as "Dr. D" to many. The popular professor served SMC since 1979 and directed the High Potential program for 12 years. The High Potential Annual Scholarship Fund has been renamed in his honor.
 
Alumnus Killed in Iraq
Sgt. Timothy MartinSgt. Timothy Martin '04 was killed along with three others in Iraq when their vehicle hit an improvised explosive device. The 27-year-old was a biology major and is the first SMC alumnus to die in the Iraq war.
Dorothy Jones and Sylvia HarperBlack Alumni Celebration
Dorothy (Benjamin) Jones '89 and Sylvia (Marquis) Harper '75 were honored Saturday night before a large crowd at the Black Alumni Celebration and Awards. Both women were recognized for significant achievements in their respective fields. 
 
Calling all Golden Gaels
gael footballAll alumni who graduated in 1957 and earlier are invited to this year's Golden Reunion on April 13. The reunion will feature a showing of "Brickpile to Broadway," a documentary produced by George Clark '66 about the early years of Gael football. All attendees will also receive a copy of the book, They Did it Every Time, by Randy Andrada '73, which chronicles the history of football at SMC.
 
So You Think You Can Dance?
The ball boys at the home basketball games do more than wipe the floor during timeouts. All year they have been gaining popularity by dropping their mops and strutting their stuff during each men's basketball home game this year.

Young alumni are invited to come out to San Francisco and learn the secrets about life after college in this highly anticipated event sponsored by the Saint Mary's, USF, UOP and Notre Dame de Namur alumni associations.

Long Time Athletic Director "Doc" McKillip Dies
Don "Doc" McKillip, the athletic director from 1970 to 1992 and member of the SMC Athletic Hall of Fame, died on Feb. 24. He was recently interviewed for the spring issue of Saint Mary's magazine.

Coach Jedd Soto's squad defeated host Stanford on Feb. 25 in a thriller at the Sunken Diamond. The team is currently posts a 7-1 record after sweeping the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee at home. Conference play begins March 28 against USF. Come out to campus to cheer them on.
 
Luxury Car Drawing
The 31st Annual Car Drawing Gala is on March 30. Enter to win a 2008 Jeep Liberty or $20,000 with all of the proceeds benefiting the Gael Athletic Scholarship Fund. Attend the Gala to win more prizes, bid on auction items and enjoy lunch with your fellow Gaels.
 
Men's Basketball News
Tom MescheryTom Meschery is No.1 - In celebration of 100 years of basketball at SMC, the Athletic Department has been releasing the names of the top 25 players of all time this season, and Tom Meschery '61 (pictured) rounds out the list at the top spot.
 
Gaels on TV - SMC takes on Portland tonight for the final game in conference play. Bay Area residents can watch them on Comcast SportsNet West at 7 p.m.
 
WCC Tournament - Passes are still available for the tournament being held in San Diego. Call (925) 631-GOTX for tickets.
