Winter Magazine Now Online
Donor Recognition Issue Highlights Students Receiving Aid
The online version of the magazine features additional articles about students, a photo gallery from the men's basketball victory over Gonzaga last season and, for the first time, expanded Gael Glimpses including additional pictures that weren't in the magazine.
New Provost Announced
Brother President Ronald Gallagher named Dr. Bethami Dobkin as the new provost. Dr. Dobkin, who most recently served as the associate provost for the University of San Diego, will begin her new position on Feb. 1.
Congressman Visits Campus
U.S. Rep. George Miller (D), a former SMC student as well as the son and grandson of alumni, hosted a town hall meeting in the Soda Center on Nov. 19. He discussed the Iraq war, the environment and college affordability.
SMC Scores High in Engagement on National Survey
The National Survey for Student Engagement (NSSE), meant to be an alternative to the controversial US News & World Report rankings, attempts to measure the levels at which students are involved in their academic experience. SMC received high marks from its students in several categories of the survey.
Alumni Awards Dinner
More than 150 people were on hand to celebrate the six winners at the 48th Annual Alumni Awards. Jim Guyette '67, Rick Reviglio '88, Brother Dominic Berardelli, Shawny Anderson, Jim Wood '70 and Jim Sciuto '00 were honored for their achievements and significant contributions to the SMC community.
Submit Your Gael Glimpse
The deadline to submit your Gael Glimpse for the next issue of the magazine is Dec. 15. Anyone who submits a Glimpse before then will be entered into a drawing for two tickets to the men's basketball game vs. Gonzaga on Feb. 4.
Alumnus Wins National Book Award
Former National Poet Laureate Robert Hass '63 won the National Book Award for Poetry for his collection, Time and Materials.
Dine with AlumsOn Nov. 13, more than 200 students and alumni from 45 different fields gathered in the Soda Center to talk about life after SMC. Alumni shared advice with current Gaels while President and CEO of Paragon Technical, Duke Powers '82, gave a keynote address.
U.N. Leader of General Assembly on Campus
Jan Kavan, the former U.N. General Assembly president, talked to students about the importance of diplomacy regarding current issues facing the Middle East.
Northern Nevada Scholarship Reaches $500,000
The endowed scholarship, designed to help students from northern Nevada attend SMC, has doubled in just two years thanks to the efforts of Rick Reviglio '88 and other alumni in the Reno area.

Men's Rugby Wins Pat Vincent Cup
After defeating No.15 Colorado in the final match, the team won the event hosted in Moraga and is currently ranked 6th in the country.

Men's Basketball Upsets Oregon After wins over then-No.11 Oregon and Nicholls State, Saint Mary's is gaining national attention by making appearances in national polls, including 29th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, 36th in the AP Poll and 7th in the Mid-Major Top 10 on ESPN.com. Freshman Patrick Mills was named WCC Player of the Week and interviewed on KNBR sports radio. Sixteen games will be televised this year.
Women's Basketball Wins Hilton Concord Thanksgiving Classic
Maija Lahde was named MVP of the tournament after the Gaels beat Boise State and Yale to take the title.
WCC Freshman of the Year Honor for Volleyball Player
Megan York was named WCC Co-Freshman of the Year. Two other freshmen on the squad were named to the WCC All-Freshman Team along with York.
