Independence Re-Imagined

The 20th century has put many new digital tools in the hands of artists. The result?  An online renaissance of artist entrepreneurs who's drawing tables double as business desks and studios fill with inventory. They have branched out and gone beyond the work for hire herd to build online businesses, self publish books, create brands of merchandise and develop independent films all while learning marketing and advertising and best business practices. These amazing artists are often managing entire projects independently and are driven by the reward of creative freedom combined with the hope of independent economic success.

Now with the advent of cross platform tools that include Cloud Distribution, Social Media, iPhone and iPad apps the distributor gate keepers of the 90's are being replaced by Facebook, Apple Store, You-Tube and iTunes. Artists are utilizing direct-to-consumer monetization techniques via web-payment platforms like Paypal and RoamPay credit card swipers and are fulfilling orders from their iPhones.

Below are a few of those artists who are paving the way by going beyond the normal 99%. The excitement of the collaboration between artists and technology really begins to mount when you realize that creators not only can create, distribute and monetize their own talent but that the next generation of creators to follow them who are just now growing up with these new tools and viewing them as general everyday items will be the ones bringing us a future of storytelling we haven't even thought of yet.

"Victoria Davis, from SpaceDog Books and I met amongst the melee of animation bodies at CTN in Oct 2010. Over English tea and American coffee she reviewed my body of work and we began to chat about the possibility of a project. Victoria had the grand idea of beginning an e-book empire which would take traditional stories and illustrations into an exciting new format. I was daunted yet thrilled to learn that the first title would be Treasure Island. Throughout the following year we began working in earnest via different sides of the pond. The process was very traditional in that thumbnails and small sketches were created and approved before moving into finished artwork. We used Photoshop for final execution with a myriad of layers so that elements could be moved if needed. I am honored to be included with the other talented members of The Creative Talent Network." THE CHAIN OF INSPIRATION

Hi this is Nicholas Mastrangelo, my mom wanted me to express to you my very first experience at the CTN Expo!

When I arrived, I first went to the Ralph McQuarry exhibit. I listened to how Ralph explained his thoughts when he first worked with George Lucas. I learned a lot of interesting facts when Ralph was creating the Chewbacca character, and when he talked about what inspired him to make such awesome characters. I loved listening to all of his stories because Star Wars is the real reason why I started drawing since I was 6 years old!  My mom showed me the movie "The Empire Strikes Back" and I was never the same.  It inspired me to create new sci fi films of creatures and robots with lots of action and music. Anyone who checks out my website, can clearly see where my influences came from. (McQuarry and Lucas)

After that I went to the convention booths. I was looking at Hang Boy's exhibit, so I bought a cave art drawing that I liked. But suddenly when I saw a booth with a "Regular Show" poster, and the guy sitting there was the show's storyboard Artist and writer Benton Conner, I was really excited because "Regular Show" is my favorite show on Cartoon Network!!!  I knew I was going to see a lot of talented artists, but I didn't expect to run into him that soon.  I started a conversation with Benton and found out he went to Cal Arts (the college I hope to go to someday) and he knew of my animation teachers that also went to Cal Arts. So I was even more impressed and felt lucky we had something in common. Meeting him was the highlight of the Expo!  (My animation teachers were glad I went too)

I told Benton about my website, gave him my business card and he was impressed a kid my age had an animation website already. I mentioned about all of the views I've been getting and that people are commenting about my films, especially the Animation music video I made for this rock band of 11 year old kids called "Haunted By Heroes" who play live concerts at rock clubs!

I also met the people that run the ASIFA Guild Club, and I was glad because they got to know me in person because they are the ones responsible for letting me know about the CTN Expo. A lot of people there thought I was a visitor with an adult, and were surprised when I told them I'm a young 7th grader animator with my own website!

I was really excited and inspired that I was able to talk to many talented artists (like Ryan Benjamin), storyboard and writers (like Benton Conner), sculptors (like Chris Ingram who by the way has a young son in a band and we talked about maybe his son might be interested if I made them an animation music video for his band), and other animation fans like "Spike" from Spike and Mike.

I hope this describes to you, what it meant for me to explore and experience the CTN Expo for the very first time! It's my winter vacation and I'm already hard at work finishing my new short animation film so I can add it to my site, and just keep on going and not stop because someday I want my own work to be featured at the CTN Expo too. Thank you for a great event!
