"Hip Hop" Limited Edition Hand Colored Etchingby Nancy Charles
Limited Edition Handcolored  Etchings by Nancy Charles

Nancy Charles' hand colored etchings reflect her love of animals. Each limited edition animal portrait is printed from an etching plate and then tenderly hand colored to enhance the character and charming expression of each animal. We've framed each in a hand-wrapped fabric mat and wood frame that will allow them to be hung individually or as a set.

Nancy's interest in art came from sitting in classes taught by her father, Clayton Charles, who was the chairman of the art department at the University of Miami. For many years Nancy worked almost exclusively in colored pencil. She discovered, however, that the line quality in her colored pencil drawings translated easily into the etching medium. Now she hand colors her etchings using colored pencil and watercolors.

David Howell Silver Plated Frames
Direct From the Framing Show

Aubrey Beardsley derived One of our many finds at the national framing convention was a series of silver plated desk frames by David Howell & Co. A limited quantity of these beautifully made frames in Judiaca, Frank Lloyd Wright, Aubrey Beardsley and William Morris designs are now in stock!

Tree of Life Frame (left): In a career of less than six years, Aubrey Beardsley, one of the best known of the Art Nouveau graphic artists, devised a brilliant succession of new styles and brought about a permanent change toward simplicity and directness in the art of illustration. Adapted from a Beardsley cover design from 1895, this frame demonstrates the artist's spare line and rich contrasts of black and white.

Ketubbah Frame adapted from the border of an 18th century Italian paper-cut ketubbah. Ketubbah Frame (right): This picture frame is adapted from the border of an 18th century Italian paper-cut Ketubbah in the collection of The Jewish Museum. A Ketubbah is a Jewish marriage contract recording the financial obligation of the husband toward his wife. In decorating the ketubbah, the artist embellished the border with birds and animals hidden within an intricate flower leaf design.

Frank Lloyd Wright Oak Park FrameFrank Lloyd Wright Oak Park Frame (left): The design of this frame is adapted from an art glass window, circa 1898, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for his Oak Park architectural studio. Wright lived and worked in Oak Park, Illinois, from 1889 to 1909, during which time he developed his Prairie style of architecture. The Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio is a museum site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This Museum Frame is plated silver with an anti-tarnish finish. Frame Gift boxed.

Beloved FrameBeloved Frame-Gift Boxed (right): The decorative elements on this frame are taken from a charming folk art papercut mizrah (Hebrew for east), which is a decoration for the eastern wall indicating the direction of prayer toward Jerusalem. The phrase "I am my beloved's, and my beloved is mine," a verse from the Song of Songs (Psalms 6:3), has been added. This frame is nickel silver and has been hand polished and lacquered. To clean, wipe with a soft, damp cloth; the frame will not tarnish.

Each frame is beautifully presented in a gift box. We have about six patterns in stock. If you like them, we will bring in more throughout the year!
Framing Story of the Month
Every Picture Tells a Story

Charlotte Diamant with her framed drawing of the San Francisco Bay
Charlotte Diamant with her framed drawing of the San Francisco Bay

Charlotte Diamant framed a picture of the San Francisco Bay that she drew for her grandfather's 90th birthday. "It was a sketch of a view out our window that turned into something really good," she says. "Morgan helped us and was really helpful and knowledgeable. She gave her design advice but also let us experiment with our own framing ideas. It turned out great!"

The DeYoung Museum

Dubbed fashion's enfant terrible, Jean Paul Gaultier is always provocative, addressing issues of sexuality, gender and multiculturalism
in his designs. Despite this gritty and controversial contextualization, his designs remain beautifully and superbly crafted works of art. This dynamic, multimedia exhibition will include 140 haute couture and prêt-à-porter designs created between the mid-1970s and 2010
