Architectural Harmony

In our feature home this month, you will see Architectural Harmony as the structures, shapes, materials and colors come together in a stunning way.

A Grand Summer Cottage

As Olivieri, Shousky & Kiss Architects designed this grand mansion in New Jersey, they were inspired by the tradition of New England's grand old summer cottages. They also sought to include the updated sensibilities of today's mansions in the Hamptons and take advantage of the setting with views of the Atlantic Ocean as well as sunsets over the bay from the dramatic Avalon High Dunes. The result is a breathtaking home, set apart with many unique architectural elements.

As Paul Kiss, Principal of Olivieri, Shousky & Kiss Architects, states, "The grand sweeping entry stair overlooking the unique sculpture garden is a major statement for the home. In addition, the tower that wraps the elevator shaft culminates in a spectacular lookout." A greenhouse imported from England and a pool cabana provide a peaceful outdoor experience.

Inside the home, the architects used the latest technologies in lighting, HVAC and insulation to minimize the environmental impact of the home. "Although large and grand, this home has a much smaller environmental footprint than a house of similar size built just 5 years earlier," says Kiss.

Designer Doors and the Grand Summer Cottage

Kiss notes that the garage doors are one of the first visual elements of the home and as such, they needed to be "spectacular." Designer Doors worked with Kiss to create doors that looked like those found on a circa 1910 home. "The materials were chosen for their beauty and timelessness as well as for their ability to withstand harsh environmental conditions. The shutters and the matching entry and outside shower doors completed the picture," notes Kiss.

Kiss works with Designer Doors on many of his projects and finds that Designer Doors takes his ideas seriously. "The staff at Designer Doors responds quickly and with the best solutions or suggestions. The level of professionalism and attention to detail are second to none."  View more photos of this home.

Meet the Designer Doors Team: Dennis Shell

Dennis Shell has been involved in the millwork business for over 35 years. He was educated at VA Tech in architecture and began his career working for local millwork companies. Shell then spent many years with larger companies including Anderson, Marvin and Pella Windows.

Shell came to Designer Doors in 2006 because, "I have sawdust in my blood and like Designer Doors because we build with real, high quality wood!" Though the economy has presented some challenges for the industry, Shell believes that things are looking up. "I see that my clients appreciate our capability to be creative and build products that not only look fantastic, but will outlive us all!"
