Architectural Harmony™

Architectural Harmony™ is about creating a unified vision for the home. Design elements are coordinated from various areas of the home to achieve this vision. As the following story illustrates, design can also be inspired by the surrounding environment. Learn how Designer Doors worked with Timothy Zingg to bring Architectural Harmony™ to his house in the woods.

Designing a Modern Treehouse

Timothy Zingg’s Hillwood House, a modern “treehouse,” sits on steel stilts in a mid-20th century neighborhood of Richmond, Virginia. Zingg, owner of design firm 7 Doors, designed and built his home on a wooded lot with a steep incline. These environmental elements, along with the ‘20s and ‘30s modern style architecture, inspired Zingg’s design. He used only steel, glass, concrete and wood in the home’s construction, minimizing the home’s environmental impact and creating a mature look that fit with the neighborhood.

Seventy-five percent of the Hillwood House’s outer walls are glass. The steel skeleton is exposed throughout the home’s interior and large slabs of polished concrete make up the floor, which heats the home through hydronic radiant heat. The 1-bedroom home features a penthouse-like master suite upstairs and a large open space on the main level that is broken up by various sets of furniture as well as a large fireplace.

Designer Doors and the Hillwood House
Designer Doors provided the entry doors, interior door and garage door for the Hillwood House. The custom doors are made of African mahogany and enhanced with modern design elements. On the entry door, one piece of wood was stretched across both the left and right door, giving the entryway a look of continuity. Zingg looks forward to watching the home and its materials evolve - as the steel matures and darkens, the wood doors will make a statement with their rich coloring. They will be a major focal point of the home.

"Working with Mike from Designer Doors has been great," Zingg notes. “They stand behind their product and are quick to resolve any issues that come up. This is the first home I have ever built and I was able to speak with the person who actually made my doors, which was very helpful.”

Meet the Designer Doors Team: Mike Schultz

Before Mike Schultz began working at Designer Doors over 3 years ago, he owned Schultz Overhead Door Company and installed Designer Doors products in the Baltimore area. In his role as Designer Doors Territory Manager for several east coast states, Schultz brings the same philosophy to working with customers that he did as a business owner - listen to your customers and gain an understanding of what they are looking for.

Schultz aims to understand his customers’ design styles and intentions and then works with them to pull various elements of their homes - such as windows and roof lines -  into the design of their doors.

The Hillwood House gave Schultz and Designer Doors an opportunity to showcase a contemporary style of door that perfectly complements the architecture of the home. “For the Hillwood House, we were able to put a wood entry door on an aluminum entry way. It is something you don’t see very often and it makes a very modern statement.” While Designer Doors often makes copper or metal clad doors for modern projects, the African Mahogany Zingg chose worked extremely well in the home’s wooded environment.

The entry door is an especially unique piece of craftsmanship. In order to preserve the continuity of the wood’s horizontal lines across both the left and right door, the engineers had to work up a solution that did not include the standard vertical astragal. Instead, their solution consists of a custom rabet on the inactive leaf that ensures the door is airtight but does not interfere with the design of the door.

It is achieving both Architectural Harmony and function that makes for satisfied customers like Zingg. See what Designer Doors can do for your home by contacting us at 800.241.0525.
