Friday Report

Greetings!

Palm Sunday is the story of our Lord's triumphant entry into Jerusalem. His disciples were filled with a sense of great expectancy since they had not understood Jesus' prophecies that he must die in Jerusalem and rise again from the dead.

Jesus came riding into the holy city where his enemies were plotting to put him to death. In the ancient world when a king came as conqueror, he rode a horse. Jesus rode a donkey, which was a sign that he came in a spirit of humility and peace.

Our Lord's entry into Jerusalem in such a public way, where every eye could see him, was a supreme act of courage. There is a courage which is born of the moment when a person responds immediately to some crisis. Then there is a higher, more heroic, courage that, knowing the cost, proceeds out of steadfast love for God.

The Palm Sunday story challenges us to pray for the grace to be courageous in responding to the challenges that we confront on our spiritual journey.

Sincerely,

Father Bruce McAllister
Chancellor

Holy Father's Message for the 27th World Youth Day,  April 1, 2012

Following the usual practice of alternating between international and diocesan celebrations, the World Youth Day which will be on this coming Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord, 1 April 2012, is celebrated at the diocesan level.

This year's World Youth Day theme comes from Saint Paul's exhortation in his Letter to the Philippians: "Rejoice in the Lord always" (4:4).  Joy is at the heart of Christian experience.  At each World Youth Day we experience immense joy, the joy of communion, the joy of being Christian, the joy of faith. Youth Day 2012: Rejoice

"Rejoice in the Lord Always.  Again, I will say rejoice!" (Philippians 4:4)

At Youth Day 2012, the young church will have a chance to celebrate our faith and to know our God better and praise His name. Wouldn't it be amazing if everyone we encountered knew that we are Catholics by what we say and do and by who we are? Come and find out how you too can be a living witness of that joy.

Season of Lent

Wednesday of Holy Week will be the day this year that Archbishop Miller will celebrate the Chrism Mass with all the priests of the archdiocese, and he's inviting the lay faithful to attend. The Mass shows the unity of the priests with their bishop.

During the Chrism Mass the bishop blesses three oils to be used for sacraments and for consecrating churches and sacred vessels.

The Chrism Mass will begin at 5 p.m. April 4 in Holy Rosary Cathedral.
