Dear Frisco Friends,
Matt & Erika Lafata
Matt & Erika Lafata

Welcome to another informative issue of The Frisco Community Newsletter, now in the 10th year as the most read publication of its kind in our great city. We exist to serve charity organizations, schools, & places of worship help get the word out about their activities, news, & events at no charge to them. After this email blast goes out to our loyal subscribers who want to be "in the know about all things Frisco," it's posted at FriscoCommunity.com.

If you're new to our email list, welcome and thank you for subscribing! Something you should know is that a number of items in the newsletter are repeated as we add new subscribers (like you) each week. As a result, you'll notice the word "NEW" in front of items appearing for the first time and "UPDATED" for those that have been in before, but had some kind of change.

The newsletter is truly FOR the community and BY the community - the majority of the content is submitted to us by the many eyes and ears of Frisco who want others to know about what's going on with their respective organizations.

Think of us as a massive, virtual community bulletin board, and feel free to be a contributor yourself to keep us in the loop about your organizations' activities!

Gobble, gobble...have you heard? The first ever North Texas Turkey Trot will be held Thanksgiving morning at Frisco Square to benefit the Miracle League of Frisco. We turn our Newsletter Spotlight on the event and below, you can find registration information as well as hear from Frisco resident & Miracle League President Cacy Saffery.

We want to wish a Happy 6th Birthday to Grayson Hughes. You may have heard about the Kindergartener at Purefoy Elementary who was diagnosed with leukemia in September. As our amazing community has shown time and time again, Frisco is one that truly cares for our neighbors; and with that love and compassion some have worked tirelessly the last few weeks to put together a fundraiser for the Hughes family this Sunday from noon 'til 5 at Dimples Cupcake Factory in Frisco Square. Please, bring your family & have "Cupcakes for a Cause" with Grayson during his birthday weekend. More about the event can be found below including contact information for the event's organizer, Mary Balboa, in case you would like to volunteer to help.

Please remember that we are only as good as our readers who submit info to us! Frisco is a diverse community and we will consider submissions that meet our criteria as they effect our community. Remember that although an event or organization may not be for you, it will be for other readers, and we're committed, as we've been the past 10 years, to "be the messenger" getting info out to the masses through this newsletter email blast.

Please visit our website to submit your community listing, check out past issues and more.

Yours in the Spirit of Community Service,

NEWSLETTER SPOTLIGHT

Our Newsletter Spotlight is on Frisco's inaugural North Texas Turkey Trot, the destination event for those looking to give their Thanksgiving festivities a kick-start - and for a good cause. Proceeds benefit the Miracle League of Frisco which provides children with mental and/or physical challenges an opportunity to play sports as a team member in an organized league.

In 2005 the dream of one field designated for children with special needs became a reality at Harold Bacchus Park with the support & thumbs-up of the Frisco City Council, Parks & Recreation Department and Community Development Corporation. Incidentally, the North Texas Turkey Trot next Thursday begins and ends at Simpson Plaza at Frisco Square, whose namesake, former Frisco Mayor Mike Simpson, also has a special bond with the Miracle League. On opening day in April 2007 he had the honor of throwing out the first pitch on the brand new E. Michael Simpson Miracle League Field - also named in his honor.

One of the first to get on board this project was long-time Frisco resident and Miracle League of Frisco President Cacy Saffery. We had a chance to chat briefly with him about the Turkey Trot and what it means to their organization.

THE FRISCO COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER:

Cacy, please tell our readers what compelled you to become involved with the Miracle League project all those years ago.

The Miracle League of Frisco

CACY SAFFERY:  From the first moment of hearing the idea, I thought it was one the most amazing opportunities to be part of something we like to call "doing the right thing".  I was in the right place at the right time and the chance to be principally involved in the Miracle League continued to present itself.  It was something I could not ignore and the rest is history.  We are truly blessed to live in Frisco, a community populated with some of the most generous and kind people in the country, helping to make the sports hopes and dreams of our kids come true.

TFCN: Obviously it's a beautiful field and as with any project such as this, there will always continue to be operating & maintenance costs which means funds have to be raised continuously. Let's fast forward to 2011 and the first ever North Texas Turkey Trot in Frisco Thanksgiving morning whose charitable recipient is the Miracle League. What can people expect next Thursday when they arrive at Simpson Plaza?

CS: Participants can expect to find a fun, positive and family friendly environment in Simpson Plaza on Thanksgiving morning.  We are very excited to have this opportunity to help Frisco and surrounding community residents start what we feel will be a family-oriented tradition for many years and generations to come.  The "Miracle Mile" will start at 8am sharp and the 5k will start shortly after at around 8:15am. With easy parking, tons of family-friendly activities, and a 5k and Miracle Mile fun run, you'll certainly be hungry and ready for your turkey dinner!

TFCN: With the race being right around the corner, how much time is left to register?

CS:  Online registration will close at midnight this Sunday, but we'll still accept in-person registrations this Tuesday and Wednesday from 9am - 9pm at Sports Authority in Frisco. If you can't make it out to register those days we will accept registrations on race day. Just keep in mind that when you register early online or at Sports Authority you'll avoid the long lines and delay on the morning of the race.

The North Texas Turkey Trot will be held Thanksgiving morning, November 24th at Frisco Square. The event benefits The Miracle League of Frisco.

Grayson Hughes Fundraiser

Dear Frisco Friends,

My name is Mary Balboa and my company Special Delivery and Dimples Cupcake Factory at Frisco Square have united to do a fundraiser for Grayson Hughes. (www.WhenSkiesAreGray.com )

Grayson is a 5 year-old boy fighting leukemia. His mom is a 2nd grade teacher where Grayson is also a Kindergartner at Purefoy Elementary and dad is an assistant coach for the Frisco Football League.

He was diagnosed the 2nd week of school and has been in and out of Children's Hospital for the past 5 months.

The owners of Dimples, former Dallas Maverick Mark Aguirre along with co-owner Keith Fluellen were touched by the story and they are donating 15% of all proceeds to the family on the 20th of November event.

The event will take place at Frisco Square. The Hughes Family will be at Dimples Cupcakes where the community can meet with him and eat CUPCAKES FOR A CAUSE.

It is also Grayson's Birthday weekend. Dimples Cupcakes and Special Delivery want to being sunshine and support to this family. We would love to end the event with the whole community singing Happy Birthday to little Grayson.

If you can find it in your heart to come to the event it will be wonderful.

Please e-mail me if you have any questions or would like to volunteer to help the Hughes family.

Thank You for your time,

Mary Balboa

NEW - JW MUSIC STUDIO OFFERS COMPLIMENTARY TRIAL LESSON:

Would you like to learn how to play the piano or guitar? Do you already play but want to learn more? Are there children in your family that want to learn?

Jeff Wille, JW Music Studio Piano Guitar
Jeff Wille, JW Music Studio

My name is Jeff Wille & I'm the owner and instructor of JW Music Studio located in Savannah, just 5 miles west of the Tollway and right off 380.

I absolutely love what I do. Music has been my passion for many years now. My mission is to utilize a variety of teaching methods and styles of music to foster that same passion in your life.

  • I believe all of my students should have a well-rounded musical education, in addition to learning how to play their instrument.
  • Your learning will be focused on the style of music that interests you, not necessarily classical styles.
  • I will customize your private lesson based on your learning style, to minimize frustration and maximize learning and enjoyment.
  • I believe music will enrich your life and become an important way that you can express your feelings and emotions.

I am easy going, patient, a great listener and sincerely care about your musical education.  I want you to be happy with your progress and what you are learning, and most importantly to be excited about playing your instrument.

Also, keep in mind that even if learning to play guitar or piano isn't for you right now, it could be for someone on your gift list. With the holidays right around the corner, giving the gift of music to a loved one is one that can last a lifetime. Plus it keeps on giving, bringing joy to the student as well as family & friends throughout the years. Please ask me about customizing a gift certificate tailored to your budget and musical aspirations of the gift recipient.

Please email me, visit my website, or call 469-481-2104 to schedule a complimentary trial lesson.

MEDICARE'S ANNUAL WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY HERE FOR FEW MORE WEEKS:
Jim Merriman
Medicare & More

It's that time of year - Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period.  Each year there is only one relatively short period in which you can add, drop, or change Advantage Plans or Prescription Drug Plans - now through December 7th.

Medicare Advantage Plans are still very popular because of their low cost and the additional benefits they provide, including vision and dental benefits not covered by Medicare. But all of the plans in our area have physician networks - which means your choice of doctors will be limited.

Medicare supplements, on the other hand, allow you to go to any doctor that accepts Medicare. But they cost more, require you to have a separate drug plan, and do not provide any additional benefits.

WHICH OPTION IS BEST FOR YOU?

I recommend you consult with an independent Medicare specialist such as myself who:

  1. Represents all of the plans available, whether they're advantage plans or supplements
  2. Knows which doctors take which advantage plans
  3. Knows the premiums and co-pays for each advantage plan
  4. Knows the formularies for each advantage plan that includes drugs
  5. Can explain the different types of supplements available
  6. Can compare supplement premiums
  7. Can compare drug plan premiums and formularies

With that information, you will then be able to make the choice that's best for you.

The author, Jim Merriman, is a Medicare specialist whose company Medicare & More offers full service Medicare solutions. He is available to answer questions during normal business hours & can be reached at (214) 284-8929 or via email.

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS CHRISTMAS GIFT & CRAFT FAIR BENEFITS NORTH TEXAS MISSIONS:

It was a routine tropical day in August as the team of 10 mission volunteers from Texas met up with the women in Jinotepe, Nicaragua, where they would be providing a week of vocational training. These were no ordinary women; they were women who were committed to break the chains of human trafficking by learning a trade that would help them provide for their families. During the week they were trained on advanced baking, cake decorating and card making skills. They also perfected their design skills and created jewelry that are true works of art.

This exceptional jewelry, along with a great variety of craft and gift items, will be offered for sale at the Home for the Holidays - Christmas Gift & Craft Fair on November 26, 2011. This shopping event has been designed to bring together craft and gift vendors that provide shoppers with a blend of traditional and one-of-a-kind gift ideas for Christmas. The location for the event is First Baptist Church, 7901 Main Street, Frisco, Texas. Doors open 9am to 3pm.

Proceeds from the jewelry sales, along with the generous donations from a portion of the vendor's sales from the day, will help North Texas Missions, Inc. provide income to the women in Nicaragua and assistance to the other countries where they provide help and support. "Providing opportunities for people to serve and show the love of God to the needy of the world is why this mission exists." stated Bob Johnson, President of North Texas Missions. Johnson added "Join us on Saturday and help others through your gift purchase."

For more information, please contact Bob Johnson via email or call 214-415-6205

NEW - CHILDCARE/NANNY IN FRISCO NEEDED:

We are a family in Frisco seeking a childcare help for our 4 and 8 year old children.

Responsibilities can include but are not limited to: Supervising and caring for my children. Sometimes requires pick up/drop off children at school/daycare and/or evening activities. Often requires providing meals (light cooking), bathing, homework (for a 2nd grader), bed-time duties. We are a 2 dog family and sitting will require very light responsibility for dogs. We are looking for an extension of our family, not just someone who needs a job. Please only call if you love kids and are willing to connect with mine.

Day/Hours Needed: This varies based on schedule. I travel for work and my husband works during the evenings. When I travel, we need help in the evenings. On occasion, we need morning help (before school, but you will be done in time for morning classes). Once or twice a year, we have a need for an overnight sitter. My 4 year old attends pre-school until the early evening and my 8 year old is in 2nd grade, and attends an on campus after school program until early evening. If you're a college student, this job leaves your days open for classes.

Salary: Will depend on the hours, much like any nanny position. For hourly work, we pay $10 per hour, plus a per diem for gas if driving our children to activities if needed. You are also welcome to our food while you are at our house. For long periods of sitting (including overnight jobs)...the pay changes a bit and I am happy to explain this more during an interview.

Contact: Serious applicants please contact Jennifer via email or call 972-523-5366. *NO SMOKERS PLEASE*

Over 800 people attended the 2010 Merry Marketplace, which was the motivation for expanding this year's event. Last year's beneficiary of the Frisco Women's League sponsored event was the Frisco Family Services Center.

"Come shop for a cause as we prepare for the holidays and also enjoy a girls outing during the Ladies Brunch", said Lisa Statzer, President of the Frisco Women's League, who anticipates this event getting bigger each year with potential to become one of the premier market events in the Dallas area. "We are delighted to help Frisco Arts and the Sci-Tech Discover Center," said Statzer, "we should be able to raise a lot of money for these organizations while shoppers have a pleasurable experience and find some great buys too."

"Sci-Tech Discovery Center is looking forward to Merry Marketplace and is pleased to be a beneficiary of this event. Funds received from the Frisco Women's League will be used to provide our signature Mind-Stretching Fun both in the museum and through community outreach," explains Erica Yaeger, Sci-Tech Discovery Center Executive Director. "Sci-Tech depends on partners like the FWL to help us inspire a new generation of scientists, engineers, innovators and educators."

WILL YOU PLEASE BECOME ONE OF ADRIAN'S ANGELS?

Adrian Najera - http://www.COTAforAdrianN.com
Adrian Najera, Age 3
Aubrey, TX

Adrian Najera is three years-old. He lives in Aubrey, Texas with his parents and his 8 year-old sister Vanessa. At one week old, he was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. Adrian has been approved for a life-saving kidney transplant, but we need your help.

Adrian's Story

Adrian's Angels is a fundraising effort by his friends and family to help give Adrian a chance at life. Adrian was born on June 8, 2008. Everything checked out fine and by the 2nd day they were able to take him home. Over the next week they noticed that he didn't seem to have a big appetite and he was a little jaundice. On Monday morning, June 16 they took him to his Pediatrician and he said the jaundice will eventually go away and his appetite will increase.

The Najeras felt that there was something else going on with their son and took him straight to the ER. It was at that time that they confirmed something was wrong with Adrian. The ER doctor came in with a very concerned look at told the parents that Adrian's labs were very abnormal. He told them that an ambulance from Children's Hospital was on its way to take Adrian because they did not have the proper equipment to treat him.

When they arrived at Children's, several members of the medical team were waiting for him to perform several exams including a spinal tap. The next thing was to take a sonogram of his organs; it revealed that Adrian's kidneys were not fully developed. You can imagine the nightmare of such news. Only a week ago they were celebrating the birth of their 2nd child and now they stood in front of a Nephrologist explaining to them that Adrian was going to need dialysis before he left the hospital. After two weeks in ICU and with the Grace of GOD, Adrian was able to go home.

The Road Ahead

Fast forward to the present, although Adrian has defied all challenges and remains stable... the time is nearing where he will need to undergo a transplant. Adrian's mother Rosemary is a match and is currently going through the donor clearing process. Once she is cleared then it's just a waiting game. The power of prayer is real. "Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer".

Can You Help?

The most important thing you can do is to support the efforts of Adrian's Angels fundraising by giving to the Children's Organ Transplant Association (COTA) in honor of Adrian. COTA is a 501(c) 3 charitable organization, with all donations fully tax-deductible.

While his family has medical insurance, it doesn't cover the full cost of the transplant itself, transportation and lodging costs related to the transplant, follow-up care expenses, and lifelong anti-rejection medication.

These costs have been estimated to be at least $55,000. Please help raise this amount so that Adrian can continue to experience life.

How to Give

* Donate via secure credit card online

* Mail checks or money orders to Children's Organ Transplant Association, 2501 COTA Drive, Bloomington, IN 47403. Be sure to write "in honor of Adrian N" on the memo line.

NEW - LANDSCAPE DESIGN/DETAIL (Middle November):

SUBMITTED BY: Glenn Everett Kopanski, United States Navy (Retired)

We are entering the Holidays and I am sure you will want a break from doing anything in the yard, but I do have some good tips for you to consider, so this week's topic can be placed aside for now but keep them close by in case you have time between Thanksgiving and Christmas, so here is what I have for you this week.

Topic of the Week: Grasses

Turf is what makes your home stand out from others but there are also problems that come with the package. To eliminate some of the problems apply some common sense. Grass/Turf should be selected on HortiCultrural levels. For example large Sunny that will have active use should be planted with common Bermuda or HyBrid Bermuda and even BuffloGrass whereas Shady less used  areas should be St Augustine or again Buffalo grass should be chosen. The HyBrid Tif-Grass should be used where are more solid area like a Slope or small Hill. RyeGrass and other Cold/Winter type Grass like

Ky-BlueGrass can be used ony for Winter color. Only problem I see with that is your Lawn of course will stick out from your neighbor's. Any Fescue really can be used for 80-100% Shaded areas. Winter Grass overseeding is popular but not allowed in many associations. Ask before planted Rebel/BlueGrass/Ky Fescue. If you see Winter Weeds in your Lawn I highly recommend you dig them out as they sprout. Nice thing about Winter weeds is they stick out and are usually the only thing green in your lawn. The failure to ignore weeds from November-March is they can easily take over your existing Lawn. May want to consider an Aeration at this time. Many if not all Landscape company's perform this procedure. What this can do for your Lawn is to give the

Grass some much needed air. By doing this you can avoid errosion as well because the water will penetrate inside the soil getting to the roots of your Turf and make it healthy looking again. Failure to perform this will ensure water run-off hence errosion you cannot see. I would do any Aeration once every 2 year's. Once they are done it will look like Dog Turds. Ensure they blow all of it up off your Patios and Sidewalks avoiding

alot of Mud. Aeration will costs you between $85-$150 depending on Lawn size, if they quote more than that I would hesitate and call on another company. All Warm seasoned Grasses are now dormant so watering once every 2 weeks is more than enough.

Now for my two Landscape Terms and Descriptions:

Landscape Term: Stock

Landscape  Desc:  A part of a Grafted  plant that provides the roots but should never be allowed to grow.

Landscape Term:  Cormels

Landscape Desc:  Small Buds that can develop around the base of a corm.

For my weekly Tree/Shrub/Flower/Groundcover of the Week:

Tree of the Week: Saucer Magnolia

This is a small but Ornamental Tree that bursts open every Spring with beautiful Pink/Red Flowers. Many varities of this Tree are available so check with your Local Arborist or Garden Center to find that out.

Hgt: 20ft Spread: 15ft.

Shrub of the Week: Nandina (Heavenly Bamboo)

This is more an upright Shrub that can fill in a corner of your property where nothing can grow well, tolerates poor soil and Ph levels so there is a spot for these in every Yard. Cane like stems turn brilliant Red, Orange, Purple and Yellow eqach fall. This is also a great Plant to have as it's Deep Red Berries feed our feathered friends all Winter long. Hgt: 6ft Spread:3ft

Flower of the Week: Creeping Phlox

This is an all time favorite for me, I can assure you that you cannot go wrong with this Flower. Massive Flowers that come in various colors like Pink/White or Lavender/Blue. Excellent along walkways or on an elevated Yard, once mature it can look like a flowing meadow of color. Cannot go wrong with tbis pick. No: Hgt/Spread Noted but I tend to say this Flower can grow out some 6 feet in all directions so you need only a few of these.

Ground-Cover of the Week: Gray Lavender Cotton

This is compact, rounded as an evergreen Shrub but to me this is a Ground Cover. I tend to differ in some cases. This has an aroma with Gray-Green Leaves and has the look of  rosemary. Plant this one along a walkway and keep trimmed adding to a Conversation piece with neighbors and friends. Hgt: 18 in  Spread: 24 in.

That is my report for you. I have been very ill and can only stress to be careful after all this mix in weather can make us over confident and thinking Flu is not around yet. Well, I can say it is, and it is bad, so pleaseget a Flu shot at anytime to protect you and your Families.

I continue to stress this situation the entire State of Texas is in and it looks like we may not have much help this Winter and that is bad for us all. We are on Stage III at this time and I am sure Stage IV is being looked at. Please turn off all automatic sprinklers at this time, all warm seasoned grasses are dormant. Watering makes no difference now using a hose to water Trees and important Shrubs is advised but not as often as one might think. I want badly for us to get out of this but it takes Team work as I said it in the Military. We all must act now before it is too late. Also, picking up any Trash around our Property is a good thing to make neighborhoods look good. An extensive Landscape can sell a home up to some 20% over the asking price so it is important to young families just starting out and the chances of staying put is not expected in many cases. For those couples walk out to your Street and look back, take a hard look and see what can be done very cheaply that will at the least make you feel good but for re-sale I can assure spending $500-$1500 will make all the difference in the world and increase the value of your home, it is a sense I called it when I bought my first home at 40 "Pride of Ownership".

If I can be of assistance you know I offer that and it is all free of charge. I wish all of you a wonderful Thanksgiving and that youhave a great day with Family, mix in some football and it's a party of friendship and love of family.

My Best Regards to You All,

Glenn
