Dear Frisco Friends,
Matt & Erika Lafata
Matt & Erika Lafata

Welcome to another informative issue of The Frisco Community Newsletter, now in the 10th year as the most read publication of its kind in our great city. We exist to serve charity organizations, schools, & places of worship help get the word out about their activities, news, & events at no charge to them. After this email blast goes out to our loyal subscribers who want to be "in the know about all things Frisco," it's posted at FriscoCommunity.com.

The newsletter is truly FOR the community and BY the community - the majority of the content is submitted to us by the many eyes and ears of Frisco who want others to know about what's going on with their respective organizations.
Think of us as a massive, virtual community bulletin board, and feel free to be a contributor yourself to keep us in the loop about your organizations' activities!

If you're new to our email list, WELCOME and thank you for subscribing! Something you should know is that a number of items in the newsletter are repeated as we add new subscribers (like you) each week. As a result, you'll notice the word "NEW" in front of items appearing for the first time and "UPDATED" for those that have been in before, but had some kind of change.

This week's Newsletter Sponsor is long-time Frisco resident Jim Merriman of Medicare and More. Read how to navigate through the annual enrollment, which continues through December 7th, or better yet, get with Jim to help in the process.

Make sure you plan to visit Cypress Creek Montessori School's Fall Festival next Sunday, October 30. Although they're excited to see their current students' families at the event, they're also opening this fun afternoon to everyone. We were happy to hear that the school is under the leadership of the beloved Ms. Faye Hasan. Our youngest attended a montessori school in Frisco she previously ran and we were thrilled that she is still in the Frisco area! Stop by and say hello to this amazing lady who has 40+ years in education, with more than 20 in the Plano/Frisco area.

The good community stewards at DeBonair Custom Cleaning are collecting items tomorrow (Saturday) for their annual Frisco Family Services food drive. Just email them and they'll come by to pick your donation up to deliver to FFS. Also, if you're looking to make some extra cash to help with holiday expenses, consider going to work for them. They're currently hiring cleaning associates. More details for both are below.

Be sure to check out Glenn Kopanski's landscaping column. Glenn has a passion for helping people any way he can, including being a volunteer contributor to this newsletter the last 6 years. Many of you have gotten to know him as a green thumb expert, but you may not know his background and what he considers his "life mission." We'll interview Glenn in an upcoming issue, so stay tuned for that.

Finally, Texas Tornado head coach Tony Curtale remains one win shy of the all-time United States Junior Hockey wins record. He'll have his next chance to tie the record when the Tornado return to Dr Pepper Arena tomorrow night against Wichita Falls. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm. It's "Pack the House" night where you can get an incredible deal: 5 premium/end zone tickets for just $25. More details can be found below.

Please remember that we are only as good as our readers who submit info to us! Frisco is a diverse community and we will consider submissions that meet our criteria as they effect our community. Remember that although an event or organization may not be for you, it will be for other readers, and we're committed, as we've been the past 10 years, to "be the messenger" getting info out to the masses through this newsletter email blast.

Please "Like" Us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter for breaking news in Frisco and timely updates in between our weekly newsletters.

We encourage you to visit our website to submit your community listing, check out past issues and more.

MEDICARE'S ANNUAL WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY IS HERE

It's almost that time of year - Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period.  Each year there is only one relatively short period in which you can add, drop, or change Advantage Plans or Prescription Drug Plans - now through December 7th.

Medicare Advantage Plans are still very popular because of their low cost and the additional benefits they provide, including vision and dental benefits not covered by Medicare. But all of the plans in our area have physician networks - which means your choice of doctors will be limited.

Medicare supplements, on the other hand, allow you to go to any doctor that accepts Medicare. But they cost more, require you to have a separate drug plan, and do not provide any additional benefits.

WHICH OPTION IS BEST FOR YOU?

I recommend you consult with an independent Medicare specialist such as myself who:

  1. Represents all of the plans available, whether they're advantage plans or supplements
  2. Knows which doctors take which advantage plans
  3. Knows the premiums and co-pays for each advantage plan
  4. Knows the formularies for each advantage plan that includes drugs
  5. Can explain the different types of supplements available
  6. Can compare supplement premiums
  7. Can compare drug plan premiums and formularies

With that information, you will then be able to make the choice that's best for you.

The author, Jim Merriman, is a Medicare specialist whose company Medicare & More offers full service Medicare solutions. He is available to answer questions during normal business hours & can be reached at (214) 284-8929 or via email.

NEW - FRISCO EDUCATION FOUNDATION CHILI CHALLENGE WINNERS ANNOUNCED; GARY BURNS FUN RUN NEXT SATURDAY AT FRISCO SQUARE:

Mooneyham Elementary's New Orleans-style chili took first place in the official chili judging for Best Tastin' Chili at the FEF Annual Chili Challenge. And the People's Choice vote once again went to Curtsinger Elementary.

Organizers estimate approximately 3, 500 people turned out for the FEF Annual Chili Challenge and the new Frisco Nation event held at Pizza Hut Park, Friday night, October 14.

The parking lot was home to 27 booths hosted by FISD campuses and departments displaying creatively decorated chili booths. Each booth competed for the "Best Theme/Decorated" booth in addition to the "Best Tastin' Chili" Award.

While families strolled and sampled chili, they also had the opportunity to visit 29 booths from FISD campuses that highlight various cultures represented in FISD. More than 20 groups of performers from campuses took to three stage areas to perform traditional music or dances from other cultures. This event, which has been planned by the FISD Diversity Committee, was canceled last year due to weather issues. Partnered with the Chili Challenge, it is believed that even more families came out to support their student and their school.

The top three chili recipe winners were: 3rd Place-Wakeland High School; 2nd Place-Sparks Elementary; and 1st place went to Mooneyham Elementary.

The people also gave voice to their opinion, with Fisher Elementary coming in 3rd place for the "People's Choice" Award on best chili, Rogers in a close 2nd place, with 1st place going to Curtsinger Elementary.

The competition also included a judging of the chili booth theme/decorations. After a very difficult judging process, the elementary campuses to take home awards in this category were: Boals Elementary with "KISS our Chili" in 3rd place, Rogers Elementary with "Medieval Times" in 2nd place, and Taylor Elementary taking home the 1st place Trophy with their "KISS the Cook Chili". The high school's also got into the theme competition. The Secondary winners were: Lone Star High School's "Lone Star Luau" winning 3rd place in this division; Frisco High School's "Indiana Jones" coming in 2nd; and Wakeland High School's "WHS Fright Fest" bringing home the 1st place trophy.

FISD departments also participated in the event. FISD Technology Department rallied again this year to run and operate the Concession Stand, the Construction Department constructed a "Barnyard Chili" booth bringing home the 1st place trophy in the FISD Department category of "Best Booth Presentation/Theme," with the Allen Elementary Café representing FISD Child Nutrition coming in 2nd.

Campus Participation is also an area of great competition. This year, the secondary campuses with the most participation (tickets sold), were Pioneer Heritage Middle School in 3rd place, Staley Middle School in 2nd place, and Frisco High School in 1st Place. Elementary campuses who garnered the most tickets were: Sparks coming in 3rd place; Mooneyham rounding out 2nd; and Curtsinger Elementary taking home the 1st place trophy again this year.

"We had another successful Chili Challenge and appreciate everyone coming out to support the foundations mission through this event. It is truly a community wide, family friendly event that helps fund college scholarships for FISD graduating seniors, grants to FISD educators, and educational programs that would not otherwise exist if not funded by the Frisco Education Foundation," said Allison Miller, director of the Frisco Education Foundation.

GARY BURNS FUN RUN IS NEXT, SATURDAY OCTOBER 29TH

Now is the time to sign up for the Gary Burns Fun Run at Frisco Square. Interested participants may go to this website for information.  Persons looking for great volunteer or sponsorship opportunities with the Frisco Education Foundation may contact Randi Davis for information.

NEW - TEXAS TORNADO COACH HOPES TO BREAK JUNIOR HOCKEY COACHING WINS RECORD TOMORROW NIGHT IN FRISCO:

Since being named the first head coach of the Texas Tornado in 1999, Tony Curtale has been a fixture behind the bench. After last Saturday's 4-3 win over the Topeka RoadRunners, he picked up a milestone win.

Though Curtale remains just one victory behind Mike Hastings in his chase to become the all-time winningest head coach in United States Junior Hockey history, Saturday's win gave him 400 as the coach of the Tornado. That feat is matched only by Hastings, who had 460 wins with the Omaha Lancers of the USHL.

Curtale's next chance to reach the overall United States Junior Hockey record will be at home here in Frisco at Dr Pepper Arena, as the Tornado take on Wichita Falls Wildcats Saturday (tomorrow) night  at 7:30pm.

Tomorrow is also "Pack the House" night where fans can get 5 great seats for just $25. Be on hand to witness this potentially-record setting game! Click here  to purchase yours.

The Texas Tornado, proud members of the 28-team North American Hockey League, play at the state-of-the-art Dr Pepper Arena in Frisco. The team will host the 2012 Robertson Cup National Championship Tournament, while partial season ticket plans and flex-packs are still available for the remainder of the season. Since their inception in 1999, the Texas Tornado have set the standard for excellence for hockey for players ages 21 and under in the United States.  Besides their three straight National Championships from 2004-2006, the Tornado have won seven NAHL Regular Season Division titles and had seven straight 40+ win seasons from 1999-2007. Since 1999, the Tornado have developed and moved on over 120 players onto NHL, NCAA and professional teams.

NEW - 13 COSTUME IDEAS FOR BABY BOOMERS (AND OLDER MOMS LIKE ME!)

Dr. Minette Riordan, Publisher of North Texas Kids Magazine
Dr. Minette Riordan, Publisher, North Texas Kids Magazine

Moms want decent Halloween Costumes, for themselves and their children! I love this guest post from Kate Forgach, who is an expert on Baby Boomers. Last time I went shopping at the Halloween Spirit Store for a costume for me, I was horrified at the low cut, high cut, lack of coverage, sexy costumes. Now I know why my mom always made our costumes! Even shopping for my daughter was distressing. Everything was too sexy for a nine year old! Kate has some great tips that are appropriate for any adult who loves Halloween as much as I do!

Doesn't it seem female Halloween costumes have devolved into overt s e xiness? Even young girls are donning witch costumes cut up to here and down to there. But such outfits just feel unseemly for Baby Boomers rapidly approaching retirement age.

Nor are guys exempt from the age-inappropriate costuming. Too many go the slovenly or uncostume route, entirely missing the point of the revelries.

Gadaffi, Charlie Sheen, Bridesmaids, Mummies and a Pride and Prejudice Zombie are just some of the zany ideas for moms and dads.

NIGHT OF DREAMS GALA BENEFITING ORPHAN ANGEL INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION:

Night of Dreams Gala, benefiting the Orphan Angel International Foundation, will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at the Westin Stonebriar Resort in Frisco. In its second year, OAIF was founded by Dallas area "Adoptive Dads" who have compassionately adopted children from Eastern Europe.  The Orphan Angel Foundation is a nonprofit organization designed to bring hope and relief to orphan children around the world through humanitarian aid and orphan hosting programs.  The fundraising gala includes a seated dinner, exciting live and silent auction, live entertainment and dancing - all hosted by Scott Sams of KRLD 1080.

With more than 143 million orphan children around the world, many have no little hope of being adopted or even a future.  Most are expelled from state run orphanages at age 16 to fend for themselves which often results in prostitution, crime and suicide.  The "founding Fathers" of Orphan Angel International Foundation were haunted by the countless children they could not adopt who begged "take me too."   The Night of Dreams Gala will provide the necessary funding to implement programs including Orphan Camps in the Dallas/Ft Worth area and bring hope to orphaned children.

Matt and the 4 youngest after a character breakfast at Disney's Polynesian Resort
Matt with our 4 youngest kiddos right before our rainy-day adventure at Disneyworld

Matt had a work conference recently in Orlando so we took advantage of the Columbus Day weekend by spending a few days prior with our 4 youngest kiddos visiting Mickey Mouse. It was a unique experience given Orlando had record rainfall while we were there, much to the dismay of the youngest who woke up that morning (ready for a much anticipated day at Magic Kingdom) to hard pouring rain which didn't stop for over 30 hours.

Were we going to let a little (ok, 13 inches is a LOT!) rain ruin our weekend? No way! When you're at Disneyworld and Mother Nature decides to throw a wrench in your plans at The Happiest Place on Earth, you've just got to "go with it." Thank goodness for Disney ponchos which ensured we'd have
"A Magical Day!"

As our pal Eeyore says, "The nicest thing about the rain is that it always stops. Eventually."

NEW - ST VINCENT DE PAUL FRISCO GOLF TOURNAMENT RECAP:

St Vincent dePaul - Mattress Movers?
Mattress on Golf Hole Nets Over $9,000! What?!

(submitted by St Vincent de Paul Frisco volunteer Pam Romero)

Okay - maybe the mattress didn't garner the $9,000, but it sure helped to bring in players for St. Vincent de Paul's Inaugural "Golfing For Friends" Tournament on October 17 at the beautiful Tribute Golf Course.

It was a surprise to all when they showed up to tee off on Hole11 and saw a mattress. It quickly became an item of curiosity.   When asked about it, Chairman Gene Sartore was quick to smile and say, "Hey, I sold that hole sponsorship because the man wanted to display his mattress and our non-profit needs the money to help those in crisis - looks like a win-win to me!" And a win-win it was!   The mattress was given away as a prize and the player who won is eager to come back again next year - where else can you play golf and go home with a new queen-size mattress! Only in Texas and only at "Golfing For Friends!"

All joking aside, SVdP is a relatively young non-profit that is very active in the Frisco community assisting those folks who find themselves in a financial crunch and don't know where to turn. All proceeds from this fund raiser will go directly back out to "friends" in need. Each Monday night the SVdP group meets to review requests from clients for assistance. There is never a meeting where there are no requests. Martin Reiser, President, says "If you could hear some of the stories we hear, you would be opening your wallet without hesitation to help. There are some folks really hurting out there."

SVdP is extremely active in helping identify resources in the area to aid clients as well as helping with utility bills, helping with family budgeting and so many other issues. SVdP is a 501(c ) 3 non-profit and all donations are tax deductible. They are a social services organization dedicated to serving all people in need, regardless of race or religion. If you need assistance call SVdP at 214-619-4096 or go to St Vincent de Paul Frisco's website for more information.

The next "Golfing For Friends" tournament is already scheduled for October, 2012, and, yes - you just might see a mattress on a hole! As Chairman Sartore says, "Whatever it takes to help our "friends" we'll do it!"

NEW - LANDSCAPE DESIGN/DETAIL (Middle of October):

SUBMITTED BY: Glenn Everett Kopanski, United States Navy (Retired)

Glenn Kopanski

It looks like our weather has begun to finally get a little cooler so we can get outside and enjoy ourselves in many ways. Doing any Fall cleanup is always welcome when temps are low and we have the energy to do that. What I recommend is to begin thinking about pulling all that old Mulch out of the beds and you can place that Mulch in one of the Manila paper sacks we can buy almost anywhere and they can re-use that Mulch to make new. The reason for saying Mulch needs to be replaced every 1-2 year's is because that Mulch carries Fungi and can strangle your Plants with Mold and Mildew just as if a Pond would create Algae. If you take this recommendation this season I strongly suggest you allow that ground to dry before placing new in. I like to pass on good advice when it comes to my Rock Gardens, Rock may thin over a 4-8 year timeframe but it never needs replacing as air is allowed to penetrate the soil better than Mulch and it looks cleaner. So, for this time in October think about a good fertilization of the Lawn and Plants/Shrubs using a topical type or for Trees fertilizer spikes and as mentioned considering any Mulch bed to be pulled out then to dry for 4-7 days bare ground then replacing the Ground protector like Mulch/Rock after the drying periods of 4-7 days. Need any information on my form of Rock Garden contact me at my home's email address.    As always, my assistance  is Free of charge over email or through Home Visits, if your situation warrants me coming to see for myself.

Topic of the Week: Defining the Edges

If your Lawn/Turf creeps into your Gardens it can cause a wavy, messy look that makes it a constant challenge. Until you install any permanent edging this mess will constantly haunt you requiring a lot of extra maintenance. My solution has always been a form of concrete type of Curbing that can be in just about any shape or form you want these days. Some Landscape Co's do this type of work. Let's say you pick Stone to match the Brick on your home, going one layer or two can truly bring out the beauty of your home and gives you a lot of options and choices as far as Plants etc. A successful Garden if stone is picked will be brought out once Plant selections are complete. You can use existing Plants but I suggest starting from scratch. The reason I say that is you want the taller plants like Crepe Myrtles to be the back drop plant and other selections rotated to the new Curbing for instance Indian Hawthornes would be a good selection in front of those Crepe Myrtles, then you would want Red Barberry to complete this Garden, add in a few flower selections that lay low would be the filler to this Garden. My form of curbing is a little more expensive than other cheaper forms of Curbing but the Curb type I am talking about is permanent and you will find yourself enjoying Family and Friends a lot more due to low maintenance.

My two Landscape terms and Descriptions:

I am giving to you each week is to teach the Language a good Landscape would talk about and this may help you understand a word and what it means making you about as smart as the best Landscaper. For this week I offer this for you.

Term: FlowerScape

Desc:  A LeafLess flower stalk that grows directly from the soil such as a Tulip.

Term: DeSucker

Desc:  To remove side-shoots or Suckers.

This is my weekly Tree/Shrub/Flower and/or Ornamental Grasses/Groundcovers:

Tree of the Week: River Birch - This is a fast growing moisture needed Shade Tree, great for areas where water collects in your yards. Most noted for its beautiful White Bark that flakes and curls on older Trees and if you're lucky you will pick a Multi-Trunked Birch. Long living Tree here and is Non-Evasive. Hgt: 60ft Spread: 30ft.

Shrub of the Week: American Beautyberry - This is a loose open Deciduous Shrub with mild-green leaves that produces deep pink-red flowers that show's itself off from early Spring to middle Summer. A great addition to any form of Landscape. It pick also produces Red fruit for our feathered friends to enjoy when the weather is cold, so with this one everyone wins even the Birds. Hgt: 7ft Max Spread: 4ft.

Flower of the Week: Blue Sage / Perennial - Violet-Blue Flowers that spike attracting many Hummingbirds contrast wonderfully with its Silvery-Green foliage. Great for Borders, Clay Planters support this one too but hanging in a basket is not recommended as this one would need a little more water and with any elevated surface they get Dehydrated and die easily. Hgt/Spread will not be noted as they variate in size and shape.

Groundcover/Ornamental Grasses of the Week: Creeping Phlow (Perennial GroundCover) - Not noted in the EverGreen families I personally consider this as a form of GroundCover. This is by far the most striking spreading Flower I have ever had, if maintained well this form of GroundCover can spread out 5ft in all directions over time and give you a beautiful deep Purple/White/Pink (coming in three colors) that looks like a Carpet full of color. If planted next to any Boulders or on a Hill can be striking and a topic of conversation of your neighborhood.

That is my report for this week.

I know everyone may gets tired of my saying this, but we ALL need to pay close attention to our water sources. We do not want this going into an emergency situation due to lower Lake levels and they are mounting fast. As one of the fasted growing areas in the Nation and the same amount of lakes we have had in this part of our Country it requires even more attention. Our warm seasoned Grasses are now dormant and if they are not they soon will be with colder air temps headed our way, my point is our lawns do not need any water at this time, the ample rainfall we just had will sustain our properties, Trees and Shrubs for some time, so all water sprinklers can be taken off of automatic at this time and placed on manual. Many water sprinkler systems do not have moisture control meaning they do not come on while it is raining or has rained. Best method to keep our most important Trees/Shrubs is hand watering. Believe me the Sprinkler Systems water but only topically and not deep into the soil doing any Tree or Shrub any good, Drip systems will get the needed water to any source that truly needs it. Keeping our Community free of trash and cigarette butts is greatly appreciated by all of us, it just makes the City look bad and most of us do not want that. We are still in a Serious Drought any of those Cigarette butts can still start a grass fire that can over take any populated areas and that would be terrible all due to negligence, so don't throw those b utts out of your windows, please.

On another note, I moved 2 months ago to a new home I had built and I have to admit, I have wonderful neighbors here that do not look at me differently than others, and I cannot say how thankful I am. The neighbor at my other home made life extremely difficult and stressful for me, so much so that I had to find a new place to live. I never anticipated having to do that, as I saw that as my final resting place.

Many of you know I enjoy educating your children about AIDS and what it does to a person and their potential in life, and I have to say Frisco students are the best. They listen to me they ask questions and write me letters like, "Thanks for letting us know the real truth about this virus". What really hurts is when I (or anyone else with this virus) is treated so unfairly and ugly, like my former neighbor. Now retired, I served in Navy combat and I truly care about us all and the condition that our country currently is in. I ask that if you know a person that has AIDS to be kind. I was infected after a combat role in 1983 from the very blood transfusions that were needed to save my life, so I stand no taller then the next. When I pass on, I hope others look back and say that Glenn took a stand for what he believed in.

I thank my friends Matt & Erika Lafata for allowing me to write for the newsletter the last 6 years, letting me add a few personal comments for each of these articles about what's on my mind and my concerns. I am only doing it as an American who loves his country.

On that final note, I wish you all of my best always, and remember I'm available anytime (if I am not teaching) to come and help with your garden and landscaping needs at no charge - just contact me at my home email address.

My Best Regards,

Glenn
