Hello Frisco Friends!

Welcome to another informative issue of The Frisco Community Newsletter, now in the 10th year as the most read publication of its kind in our great city. We exist to serve non-profit organizations, schools, and places of worship help get the word out about their activities, news, and events at no charge to them. After this weekly email blast goes out to our loyal subscribers who want to be "in the know about all things Frisco", it's posted at FriscoCommunity.com.

The newsletter is truly FOR the community and BY the community - the majority of the content is submitted to us by the many eyes and ears of Frisco who want others to know about what's going on with their respective organizations.

Think of us as a massive, virtual community bulletin board, and feel free to be a contributor yourself to keep us in the loop about your organizations' activities!

If you're new to our email list, WELCOME and thank you for subscribing! Something you should know is that a number of items in the newsletter are repeated as we add new subscribers (like you) each week. As a result, you'll notice the word "NEW" in front of items appearing for the first time and "UPDATED" for those that have been in before, but had some kind of change.

We'd like to wish our amazing friend and longtime newsletter "green thumb" contributor Glenn Kopanski a very happy birthday! Glenn celebrated Saturday night amongst close friends at his new home, which was a "double birthday celebration" shared with his dear friend Roseann Rossetti. We were so sad to miss the party, as we were with our 4 youngest kids visiting Disneyworld over the long holiday weekend prior to a work conference. (Mickey sends birthday hugs which we will pass along to Glenn and Roseann next time we see them!)

Speaking of celebrations...Texas once again takes the cake! Congratulations to Frisco's Debbie Carroll-Boyce who won the annual Ms. Senior America competition in Atlantic City, NJ last week. Those who know Debbie aren't a bit surprised that she wowed the 5 judges and walked away with the crown. The philosophy behind the Senior America organization is the belief that seniors are the foundation of America and one of our most valuable treasures. Seniors help the younger generation build self-esteem, knowledge, experience, and resources to continue building a better society for the future. Read more below about how Debbie plans to spend her year promoting her platform and see a photo of her moments after she was crowned.

NEW - FRISCO EDUCATION FOUNDATION CHILI CHALLENGE TOMORROW; GARY BURNS FUN RUN RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER:

This October, all Frisco ISD friends and families, are urged  to "eat and run" in support

of Frisco ISD and the Frisco Education Foundation at the Chili Challenge, Frisco Nation and the Gary Burns Fun Run at Frisco Square.

Frisco ISD goes all out to enjoy the fall experience and celebrate family fun as the district comes together to support the Frisco Education Foundation. The Frisco Education Foundation Chili Challenge on October 14, will have an added element of community spirit with the addition of Frisco Nation this fall. Frisco Nation, a festival to celebrate the many different cultural heritages represented in FISD, was scheduled for last spring but canceled due to inclement weather. Songs, dances, crafts and costumes from various countries will be displayed by FISD students. "Frisco Nation is Frisco ISD's first district wide diversity celebration, and it will be offered in conjunction with the Chili Challenge. Although many campuses have cultural celebrations during the school year, this will be the first time all campuses come together in one location for this purpose," according to Charese Duffey, one of the coordinators of the event.

The Chili Challenge brings folks of all cultures together over a bowl of Texas Red. It features different chili booths from various schools and departments within FISD. "The key thing to remember at Chili Challenge is that you are just getting a sample, a taste, from each booth," says Allison Miller, Frisco Education Foundation director and long-time chili aficionado. "The $5 buys you a bowl, a spoon and entrance into the event. Get there early because if you come later, many booths will already be out of chili. The hot dogs, water and soft drinks are on sale separately."  The entry fee also gives the bearer of the bowl and spoon the right to vote on their favorite chili.

How early should chili lovers come out? The event will begin at the Pizza Hut Park Gold Lot at 5 p.m. and last until 7 p.m., shutting down shortly before the Frisco High School/Heritage High School football game begins at Pizza Hut Park. "We have about 3,000 people come through in a two-hour span," Miller said. "The earlier you arrive the more chili you get to sample."  Parking will be in the Red parking area west of the Pizza Hut Park stadium.

The competition for chili accolades can get very heated. Some schools value the awards offered by the "professional" judges panel, while others think the goal of being the "people's choice" chili is the whole point of the experience.  Other campuses have set their hearts on being the school that sells the most tickets - garnering the best participation award.  Campuses also vie for the most creative booth design.

"We have great support from our participants and the families of students.  And many people in the community who no longer have students in school look forward to this event all year. The Chili Challenge has become a great Frisco tradition," Miller said.

The funds raised at the Chili Challenge benefit the Frisco Education Foundation.  The Foundation is very excited to announce that this year three important community supporters have come forward to serve as Platinum Sponsors at all FEF events.  The Platinum Sponsors are AutoSplash, Corgan, and CORE Construction.  "We are very excited to have these three long-time friends of the Foundation on board to support us in all we do," Miller said.

The Three Platinum sponsors will be joining several other major community sponsors to insure that the Gary Burns Fun Run at Frisco Square keeps the pace this year on October 29th.  Visit  www.FriscoEducationFoundation.org for a complete sponsor list. The Fun Run, held at Frisco Square, is the major Frisco Education Foundation fundraiser. Frisco Square signed another three-year contract to be the title sponsor for the event. The Fun Nun, named in memory of the late Assistant Fire Chief Gary Burns, is in its 12th year and continues to grow in numbers and in fame in the North Texas area. An average of 5,000 people converges on Frisco Square to take part in the official USATF 5K run or the one-mile fun run/walk.

"Once again, because of the size of the event and the logistics, it is important for people who are participating or dropping off a runner to arrive early. The roads will close at 7 a.m. and they won't open up until after the event.  There will be people out directing traffic and showing people where to park," she said. "Folks who park in Pizza Hut Park's blue parking lot need to know that they will have to stay through the whole event and won't be able to leave early."

The Fun Run money funds six major Foundation-supported Gary Burns Scholarships, Miller says, in addition to providing funds for the Frisco Education Foundation.

Now is the time to sign up for the Gary Burns Fun Run at Frisco Square. Interested participants may go to www.GetMeRegistered.com for information.  Persons looking for great volunteer or sponsorship opportunities with the Frisco Education Foundation may contact Randi Davis  for information.

The Frisco Education Foundation provides financial resources to maximize student potential in the Frisco Independent School District through educational programs, student scholarships, and grants for innovative educators.

NEW - TEXAS TORNADO COACH TONY CURTALE APPROACHES ALL-TIME WINS RECORD:

The Texas Tornado are off to a fast start in 2011-2012, posting a 6-1-1 record through the first eight games of the season. This weekend, Texas will play a Friday contest at Wichita Falls before returning home for a pair of games against the Topeka RoadRunners, with whom the Tornado are tied for second in the South Division. The two teams are just a single point behind Amarillo for the South Division lead, so this weekend has the potential to be a pivotal one in the early stages of the season.

But the storyline of the weekend extends from the ice to the bench, as well. Tornado head coach Tony Curtale comes into the weekend with 527 regular-season wins in his NAHL coaching career. That total puts him three wins shy of breaking the record held by Mike Hastings, who is currently an assistant at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Curtale began his NAHL coaching career with the Springfield Jr. Blues, spending five seasons behind their bench. After being named the first coach of the Texas Tornado in 1999, Curtale now finds himself on the precipice of history. A win in Friday's game at Wichita Falls would make for a potentially momentous weekend back at Dr Pepper Arena. Home games on Saturday and Sunday give fans a chance to Curtale break, or at least tie, the record on the Tornado's home ice.

Tickets are still available for fans to be on hand for to witness the potentially-record setting games this weekend. Saturday's game against the RoadRunners is at 7:30 p.m., while Saturday's contest will start at 5:00 p.m. Tickets can be ordered by calling the box office at 972-335-9800.

The Texas Tornado, proud members of the 28-team North American Hockey League, play at the state-of-the-art Dr Pepper Arena in Frisco. The team will host the 2012 Robertson Cup National Championship Tournament, while partial season ticket plans and flex-packs are still available for the remainder of the season. Since their inception in 1999, the Texas Tornado have set the standard for excellence for hockey for players ages 21 and under in the United States.  Besides their three straight National Championships from 2004-2006, the Tornado have won seven NAHL Regular Season Division titles and had seven straight 40+ win seasons from 1999-2007. Since 1999, the Tornado have developed and moved on over 120 players onto NHL, NCAA and professional teams.

NEW - NIGHT OF DREAMS GALA BENEFITING ORPHAN ANGEL INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION:

Night of Dreams Gala, benefiting the Orphan Angel International Foundation, will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at the Westin Stonebriar Resort in Frisco. In its second year, OAIF was founded by Dallas area "Adoptive Dads" who have compassionately adopted children from Eastern Europe.  The Orphan Angel Foundation is a nonprofit organization designed to bring hope and relief to orphan children around the world through humanitarian aid and orphan hosting programs.  The fundraising gala includes a seated dinner, exciting live and silent auction, live entertainment and dancing - all hosted by Scott Sams of KRLD 1080.

With more than 143 million orphan children around the world, many have no little hope of being adopted or even a future.  Most are expelled from state run orphanages at age 16 to fend for themselves which often results in prostitution, crime and suicide.  The "founding Fathers" of Orphan Angel International Foundation were haunted by the countless children they could not adopt who begged "take me too."   The Night of Dreams Gala will provide the necessary funding to implement programs including Orphan Camps in the Dallas/Ft Worth area and bring hope to orphaned children.

NEW - FRISCO'S DEBBIE CARROLL-BOYCE WINS MS. SENIOR AMERICA CROWN AT ANNUAL PAGEANT:

Debbie Carroll-Boyce, Ms. Senior America 2011
Debbie Carroll-Boyce, Ms. Senior America 2011

Debbie Carroll-Boyce of Frisco was named the 2011 Ms. Senior America at the annual Ms. Senior America Pageant held in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Ms. Carroll-Boyce will be using this outstanding platform to promote a lifestyle of healthy living for seniors, along with raising awareness for mental and physical well-being and to raise funds for research for Alzheimer's disease and Dementia.

Ms. Carroll-Boyce wowed the judges with her beauty, poise and grace, along with her singing and dancing to "Stuff Like That There" from the Bette Midler movie, "For the Boys." Debbie's list of volunteer work and community involvements are extensive and include volunteering her time tutoring students, being an active member of the community in her hometown of Frisco, Texas, being named the "Most Positive Principal" by the Power of Positive Student Organization, taking the first school in her community to receive the United States national "Blue Ribbon" recognition at the White House in Washington, DC while she was still an active principal, being a wonderful mother and so much more. In her professional life prior to her current profession of Realtor for Ebby Halliday Real Estate, Debbie was an educator for 31 years which included 17 years as an elementary school principal and 14 years as a middle and high school teacher and counselor. Debbie earned a Bachelors' Degree in Communications from the University of Texas at Arlington and a Master's Degree in Education/Counseling and Mid Management Administration from Texas Women's University.

"I feel incredibly honored to be the winner of this wonderful competition and will serve with proud enthusiasm for all that it represents. Just because a person reaches a certain age, does not mean you should quit pushing and challenging yourself every single day. I am flattered beyond belief and will serve with great pride to help raise awareness for all I believe in", stated Ms. Carroll-Boyce, "and I look forward to the adventure that lies ahead."

The queen of Texas real estate, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday, Ebby Halliday stated, "We are so proud of our Debbie. She is such an over-achiever and hard worker and sets goals that are difficult for anyone to achieve, yet she manages to do it with poise and grace." Ms. Carroll-Boyce is currently a Realtor for Ebby Halliday Real Estate who has earned numerous sales awards from the company.

The philosophy behind the Texas chapter and the national organization Senior America is the belief that seniors are the foundation of America and one of our most valuable treasures. Seniors help the younger generation build self-esteem, knowledge, experience, and resources to continue building a better society for the future. "These are not simply beauty pageants for women that are 60+, these pageants re-define senior women in the 21st Century", according to Mary Frances Hansen, Director of the 2011 Ms. Texas Senior America Pageant. "The Pageants are about inner beauty; these women are dynamic and talented in every way. Our goal is to encourage seniors to embrace life and foster a positive attitude about aging. We strive to enrich and empower senior women as our pageant contestants represent the positive image of aging. 1st runner up, Dr. Karen Taylor from Colorado certainly deserves a lot of recognition for her hard work, along with all of the 38 competitors, not only for their dedication, but for their belief in the Ms. Senior America principals."

The 5 judges scored all contestants on 4 components of the Ms. Senior America Pageant: philosophy of life, personal interviews with the judges, evening gown competition, and talent.

PHOTO OF THE WEEK
  Matt Lafata and Billy Beane
Matt Lafata with Oakland A's General Manager Billy Beane

At an HR technology vendor conference this past week in Orlando, Billy Beane was the keynote speaker. If you don't recognize the name, Billy Beane is the VP and GM of the Oakland A's and the man that the movie Moneyball is based on. As a baseball fan, I particularly enjoyed listening to him talk about the sport in general and of course, the mathematics he employed when selecting players that made the basis for his book (and recent movie starring Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill).

He held a meet and greet where I got a signed copy of the book and got to talk some baseball with him. Since he revealed during his presentation that he was a fan of the Red Sox (of which many of you know I am very passionate about), I decided to talk Red Sox with him.

Turns out that the (now ex) Manager of the Sox, Terry Francona, worked for him at one point and he almost become the GM of the Sox 8 years ago when they made Theo Epstein the (now ex) GM. Anyway, nice guy, entertaining presenter, and obviously very knowledgeable about baseball. - Matt Lafata

QUOTES OF THE WEEK

"We worry about what a child will be tomorrow, yet we forget that she is someone today." - Stacia Tauscher

"I don't view having too many good (baseball) players as a problem." - Billy Beane

"Do I wish everybody in baseball had the same amount to spend? Absolutely. At some point, the disadvantage of being a small-market team is that the inefficiencies will be weeded out. Having less than your competitor is never an advantage." - Billy Beane

NEW - 'WALK FOR THE POOR' RAISES OVER $3000 TO HELP NEEDY:

SVDP-Frisco
St. Vincent de Paul Frisco Walkers

It was a picture perfect day at Bachman Lake for a walk or a run - made more perfect by the reason for walking - to help those in need. A mixture of young and old, dogs and kids participated in walking or jogging the beautiful perimeter of Bachman Lake on September 24.

For those who are unfamiliar with St. Vincent de Paul, it's a non-profit organization that assists those who have fallen on hard times and personal crisis by providing assistance with utilities, rent, family budgeting, and guidance to other resources. All funding comes from private donations and fund raising events. SVdP-Frisco was started in 2009 and since that time. SVdP has helped over 400 families, which include more than 1000 children and adults. SVdP distributed over $90,000 in funds to help pay bills of these clients in Frisco and surrounding areas and volunteers have contributed over 6,000 hours in assistance.

St. Vincent de Paul is a 501(c ) 3 non-profit organization and all donations are used directly for those in need. SVdP is staffed by all volunteers ensuring all funds are used to help those in crisis. SVdP finds they are assisting mostly with rent, mortgage payments, utility bills, and sometimes are repairs. Funds are never given directly to the client as SVdP pays all bills directly to the billing agency. The exception may be gift cards for food or gasoline.

The next fund raiser for St. Vincent de Paul Frisco will be a Golf Tournament scheduled this Saturday at the Tribute Golf Course. To learn more about SVDP and these events, go to the website www.svdpfrisco.org. If you are in need of assistance call SVDP at 214-619-4096.

St. Vincent de Paul is a 501c (3) non-profit organization and all donations are tax deductible. St. Vincent de Paul is a social services organization dedicated to serving all people in need, regardless of race or religion

NEW - HOPE PARK 5K & FUN RUN RAISES OVER $12,000:

Texas Tornado's Ike in the dunk tank at Hope Park's 5K Fun Run
Texas Tornado's Ike the Polar Bear takes a turn in the dunk tank at Hope Park's fundraiser recently held at The Trails of West Frisco

With more than 500 registered participants, the Hope Park Frisco 5K & Fun Run was an overwhelming success, raising over $12,000. This is a great start toward the $500,000 needed to bring the park to life.

October 1st in The Trails of West Frisco, hundreds of participants from Frisco, Plano, McKinney, Little Elm and even New Mexico showed up ready to participate in this worthy cause. "It was so exciting to be part of an event where my son, Trevor, who is in a wheelchair, could participate with his friends and family in an event that was friendly for both disabled and non-disabled children," said René Sinclair, Hope Park Board Member.

Mayor Maso was on hand to kick off this amazing event for Hope Park, and David Gaschen of The Phantom of the Opera, sang the National Anthem. City Council Member Jeff Cheney joined The Trails HOA President, David Aronoff, in the dunk tank, which was a huge draw for the children. When they were not waiting to throw that perfect pitch at the dunking booth, the kids were treated to face painting, Hope Park tattoos, homemade cookies and balloon animals

Also on hand was Ike, the polar bear, of the NAHL Texas Tornado Junior Hockey team. Ike delighted spectators and kids alike, with his perfect playfulness and when he sat in the dunk tank but luckily, did not get "dunked."

A big thank you goes out to The Trails Runners for organizing the event, as well as Hope Park Frisco 5k and Fun Run sponsors that included,  Peak Physical Therapy, Centennial Pediatrics, Frisco Kids Dentistry, Hoogeveen Health Center, Michele Howard with Ebby Halliday, Tieperman Health & Wellness, Parcel Pedia, Grace Avenue United Methodist Church, and Luke's Locker.

Hope Park is set to be built late 2012. This special playground is designed to allow special needs children to play side-by-side with their peers in a safe, stimulating and fun environment. Located in the Trails of West Frisco, Hope Park will be a destination of choice for the area's children and will be a community asset for years to come.

NEW - LANDSCAPE DESIGN/DETAIL (Early to Mid October):

SUBMITTED BY: Glenn Everett Kopanski, United States Navy (Ret)

Glenn Kopanski

Maybe it took my 54th birthday party  to get some rainfall in here but if that  is the case then so be it, right. Likely not but the rain was welcome and better then not getting any at all, still rainfall like this does nothing to Lake Levels instead it will sustain whatever is growing a little longer. We need frequent copious type rainfalls to put even a dent into this recent drought. On that note we will go to our subject of the week: Fertilizers & Why We Use Them.

There are thirteen essential mineral elements obtained from the soil that are divided into Three Groups that are based on the relative amounts of nutrients used by Plants. Micro-Nutrients are used in very tiny amounts of the following: Boron, Chlorine, Copper, Iron, Manganese, Malybdenun and all important Zinc. Acid loving plants will often have problems obtaining Iron in the State of Texas where our soil is Alkaline. Secondary type Nutrients - Calcium, Magnesium and Sulfar are used by plants in larger amounts and deficiencies can be more common. Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potasium are all primary elements of life for more important Landscaped properties, seen more in Trees and Large Shrubs. In summary to all that we use Fertilizers to correct deficiencies in one or more of the essental elements of life just as if we are humans need those same elements to live. To key in on any instructions for all fertilizers look for a (N) for Nitrogen (K) for Potassium and a (P) for Phosphorous that knowledge will assist you in the future to understand any form of fertilizer.

Next, I want to give you some gardening tips. Our Trees and Shrubs have taken a true beating this year, sadly many of them have died and will need replacing. If you see some new growth this is good but I still encourage all to go ahead and buy some fertilizer spikes and pound three of them around each Tree into the ground. Use the plastic protector when

you pound any spike into the ground provided in the box of spikes because if not used the spike could shatter. No matter what condition your Trees are in right now I recommend doing this. As explained above these spikes will provide your plants with essential elements that have been robbed. Lack of rainfall means lack of energy for any plant because rainfall

brings in essential nutrients from the sky and air around us, while we want to believe City water is the best it truly is not because those three elements are not in our drinking water and chorine is introduced in our drinking water as well, so try and do this in late October to Middle November.

Our Lawns are going Dorment at this time. Early Frost does not occur until Middle November on average but even saying so warm seasoned Grasses have already begun their cycle into a Winter Dormant stage. Overseeding with Ryegrass some enjoy if you do not want your yard looking and acting green requiring some mowing in the colder months I do not encourage you to spread that seed down and especially this year for anyone because all this requires water we cannot afford. It is important to keep onboard when it comes to walking around your property looking for anything out of the ordinary like hanging limbs from any Tree or dead spots on your Turf or Tree branches that need pruning up because

this is the time to do those. Does not hurt to keep an eye out on any Mud-Dobber Hornets, they tend to build a muddy type nest alongside windows and doors and yes they are still around. Most termites have subsided for the year but we have had a long streatch of Hot weather and have had few nights in the 50's. Keep an eye out on them. Most notable is the

top of any wood fence posts that have not been treated, if you see a jagged edge on the top you are okay, if noted run a pocket knife down the side of your posts if you see a sawdust-type material coming from the slice, you have either active or inactive termites. Most wood these days are treated. If not consider doing a new wood fence or treating the one you have

with anything that has a product to kill termites there are too many to say which type you need but this is the time to try and kill them and also now because forecasters and myself included believe we will have a much warmer winter then in the past and if that holds true we will be dealing with epidemic levels of Fire ants and other Insects.

Ways to make your Garden look good for the Winter is to plant Pansies in your Pots. For your information if you are using any Containers or Pots for Annuals you might want to stick with the game plan and only have Containers/Pots look the same. Different sizes and colors can look "Busy" and take away from the overall look of your home. Yard Art is popular these days and can of course be used more in the Back then the front, be very selective when it comes to the front though, for instance placing a Texas Star in front can look very nice, but placing Animal figures, etc. can look bad if not done in good taste. Please try and remember you have neighbors that truly might not want to see too much Art, and if any of the homes surrounding you go on the market for sale, it could take away from the overall look of the neighborhood.

Now for my Two Landscape Terms and Descriptions:

1./  Term: CORM

Desc:  The swollen energy-storing structure, analogous to a Bulb located under the

soil of the base of a Stem of a plant like Crocus or Gladiolus.

2./  Term: IMPELLER

Desc:  The part of a water pump that moves the water.

Now on to my weekly Tree/Shrub/Flower and/or Ornamental Grass/Groundcover picks:

(Each are picked from the many selections I have and are all Drought/Heat comfortable for this climate.)

Tree of the Week: Aleppo Pine

A broad conical Tree that becomes rounded with age that show off it's Scaly Reddish

Brown Bark. Soft light Green needles grow in bundles of 2 or 3. Great for contrast in

any Garden setting and a conversation piece. Hgt: 40ft Spread/Width: 10ft.

Shrub of the Week: Natal Plum

This is a fast growing Shrub rounded in nature with beautiful leathery rich Green

leaves and smaller spines too. Fragrant yearly flowers White in color with Red

edible fruit later in the Summer/Fall. Many versions of this plant with other names

as well so investigate this one before placing it. Hgt: 3-6ft Spread/Width: 6ft

Flower of the Week: Creeping Phlox (Annual and/or Perrenial)

This is my favorite of all flowers. Massive colrs of Pink/White/Lavender-Blue

nearly cover this plant and as it grows and gets older it can turn a nice Garden into

a Mansion of all Flowers. Good for Mulch Beds even better for Rock Beds and also

for your Planters and hanging baskets. Hgt: 1ft Spread/Width: 2-4ft.

Ornamental Grasses of the Week: Mexican Feather Grass

This once it has aged some can sway in the wind cascading in different sizes and

shapes can make a Garden look smart in that it will never need watering and can

withstand our intense Heat.  Placed well in your Garden and it will enhance the look

   of your Home.

That is my report this week. As always if you need advice or attention please contact me at my home's email address. I will be more than happy to assist you in anyway I can, all free advice as well.

Please, I cannot stress enough to not throw cigarette butts out your windows, that one light can spark a large grass fire that could burn areas where animals nest or get into a housing area destroying homes and properties and hopefully not lives. Also, before one throws anything out the windows, please think of those of us that care very much about where we live. I do this for the sake of the Frisco community and Matt's bride, Erika, and their kids who all add so much to Frisco and beyond, and we should all be proud of their commitment to Frisco by doing this newsletter.

I also need to give out my comment of the week:

---For those who Bully or taunt over the Internet I ask you to please think before acting. The information I get shows several suicide cases recently, so it will be a joint venture to stop this epidemic once and foreall for the sake of our Country and Community. This really hit me hard when I found out a friend of mine lost a son due to Internet behavior caused his son to perish, and that is a shame our own people do that to those who are not like the rest of us, as I have stated before America needs to learn how to love itself again, somewhere we lost that so we can make this stop if we all play a part in it.

Take Care to all and if I can be of any help please contact me.

My Best Regards, Glenn
