Hello Frisco Friends!
Welcome to another informative issue of The Frisco Community Newsletter, now in our 10th year as the most read publication of its kind in our city.
As you may already know, in 2001, I (Matt) began the newsletter before I was elected to the Frisco City Council as a grass-roots initiative to let people know what was going on in the city, and for me to be able to communicate my thoughts about various city issues.
After being termed out after 6 years on council in May 2008, my wife Erika and I chose to continue the weekly newsletter to assist area non-profits, schools and places of worship to get the word out about their organizations and events at no charge to them. Ten years later, the majority of the content of this publication still consists of those types of submissions.
If you're new to our email list, WELCOME and thank you for subscribing! Something you should know is that a number of items in the newsletter are repeated as we add new subscribers (like you) each week. As a result, you'll notice the word "NEW" in front of items appearing for the first time and "UPDATED" for those that have been in before, but had some kind of change.
We have quite a large newsletter this week, packed with so many great events going on in our area, especially community yard sales. Erika decided to send this week's issue out a day early to make sure you have plenty of time to plan your weekend!
Many of you may not know this, but in my professional life, I am the President of Frisco-based HRchitect, the leader in Human Resources (HR) systems strategic consulting while my wife, Erika, takes care of putting together this publication each week. Recently at HRchitect we brought in Sales & Customer Service Expert/Author Dean Lindsay to work with our team during our national sales meeting. I hope you'll take time to read about Dean, the Newsletter Spotlight this week and consider him for your next company function.
This week's Newsletter Sponsor is Yards By Design. If you've been a reader of our newsletter for the last few years you know that Yards by Design has been one of our partners for quite a while now. We've been very pleased with their service, whether it was a question we emailed owner Lee Heidle or just the consistent good maintenance by his staff, we can't recommend them highly enough! Most of their regular service for lawns is $25 - and they always have free estimates, whether it's to cut your lawn, spruce up your landscaping or come up with something new for you. More information can be found below.
Also, be sure to check out our good friends at DeBonair Custom Cleaning, who has a compelling offer for new clients below, and read more about Frisco Fights FAT's Biggest Loser Competition and how Matt Schultz can help you reach your weight loss & fitness goals as well as put a little extra something extra (hint: it's green) in your pockets just for getting healthy.
The hit LifeTime Television parenting series SuperNanny is currently casting. This season they're looking for families (with children from toddler to teens) with ordinary and extraordinary circumstances; parents with 'mean' girls or bullying boys, blended families where both sides are seeking help, and parents of multiples. Producers said they want families from every type of background who are ready for the opportunity of a lifetime. If this sounds like something you're interested, more info can be found below.
Finally, we'd like to congratulate our dear friend and newsletter contributor, Dr. Minette Riordan, Publisher of North Texas Kids, on recently being awarded the Libby Linebarger Award by the Texas Professional Home Childcare Association. The award, named after the State Representative who worked to bring child care issues before the state legislature, is now given in Ms. Linebarger's honor to an individual "for the outstanding work and dedication that has been given to benefit the safety and well-being of children across Texas." We're so happy they chose such a deserving recipient! You can read more about Minette's work that led to the nomination and win below.
Please remember that we are only as good as our readers who submit info to us! Frisco is a diverse community and we will consider submissions that meet our criteria as they affect our community. Remember that although an event or organization may not be for you, it will be for our other readers and we are committed, as we've been the past 10 years, to "be the messenger" getting info out to the masses through this newsletter email blast.
After this email is blasted out to our subscribers we later post it online in the Past Issues section of our website.
Please "Like" Us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter for breaking news in Frisco and timely updates in between our weekly newsletters.
We encourage you to visit our website to submit your community listing, inquire about advertising your business, check out past issues, and subscribe or unsubscribe to the newsletter.
Have a fantastic week!

NEW - LOCAL PUBLISHER RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS AWARD FOR MAKING INPACT ON TEXAS HOME CHILD CARE:
| |
Dr. Minette Riordan with Ronda Smith, President of Garland Home Child Care Association
|
Recently, Dr. Minette Riordan, founder of North Texas Kids magazine was awarded the Libby Linebarger Award by the Texas Professional Home Child Care Association at their annual state conference. This award was named after State Representative Libby Linebarger who worked to bring child care issues before the state legislature in the early 90's. They now give this award in her honor to someone "for the outstanding work and dedication that has been given to benefit the safety and well-being of children across Texas."
Dr. Minette Riordan has donated her time to conduct workshops and lectures for various chapters of TPHCCA around the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex for the past 4 years and provided home child care providers with "clock hours" towards their continuing education credits. Her passion is ensuring that parents and caregivers have the education and resources they need to raise happy healthy children and public speaking is one way that she does this.
Ronda Smith, who nominated Dr. Riordan and is President of the Garland Chapter of TPHCCA, was thrilled that the committee selected Dr. Riordan. "I am so excited to present this award to Dr. Riordan. She is always so generous with her time and our group always appreciates the value she brings in every talk. I could not think of a better recipient of this award. Her magazine has been a great resource for me and for other child care providers in North Texas."
Dr. Riordan says she was honored to be the recipient of the Libby Linebarger award. "I love working with this group and always donate my time to speak with them. They are the ones who are passionate about raising children and also about educating themselves to be better caregivers. I also spoke at their conference on Friday and Saturday and am delighted to have met home child care providers from around the state. Our children are in good hands! Many thanks to them for the award but even bigger thanks to the amazing work and love these women give to the children in their care."
Dr. Minette Riordan has successfully built a multi-media publishing company targeting families in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex. She credits her success to learning how to connect with others through networking, referrals, strategic partnerships and an attitude of service to others first. Prior to starting her company, Minette was an educator who earned her Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1995. She has taught at the university and high school levels, as well as adult education and personal development workshops. She was named the 2009 Small Business Owner of the Year by the Plano Chamber of Commerce and received the 2007 Altrusa Outstanding Women of Today award. Scissortail Publishing has produced North Texas Kids for 9 years, a magazine targeting moms in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. In June of 2011 she launched a second publication titled byDesign: Your Life, Your Business, targeting women business owners. Her passion and joy come from helping others find the information, tools and inspiration they need to succeed. Minette lives in Plano, Texas with her husband, Brad and her two children, ages 12 and 9.

NEW - LANDSCAPE DESIGN/DETAIL (Mid-End of September):
SUBMITTED BY: Glenn Everett Kopanski, United States Navy (Ret)
 |
|
We are finally getting into a better weather pattern but the severity of this Drought is not over by all means, I believe it will continue on right into 2012 maybe beyond that unless LaNina in the Pacific gets rid of its grip on the southern United States, only then will we return back to a more normal weather pattern. If this holds true then North Texas will begin seeing an emergency water issue. So, knowing this it is wise for us to all think of alternative Landscape plans. Using more Ornamental Grasses plants like Yukka's that do well in Heat and the Colder climates as well, the need to add in Barberry, Texas Sage's, Any of the Holly Families and Trees like Desert Willows all can not only save our Landscape but not have the constant need for any water. If you are building new Construction as I have in my new home in Frisco Lakes you have the best ability to change your Landscape style more so than an older home with established plants and Trees.
For this week's topic: Perennials - For any Perennial garden it requires planning and for this week I wanted to share some information that can pertain to nest Spring. Take an overview of your yard and either develop a new plan with an existing Garden or Design the new Garden. Discuss with the family what types of plants you want and some will not believe this but you can take the list of plants to any Garden Center and request a special delivery for your needs or ask specialist to stock them next Spring. You can make a special request to get the kind of plants you choose. The key to success when it comes to Perennials is to write notes in that Landscape Journal I talk about all the time and do not repeat last year's mistakes. If you have Garden beds that are free standing meaning the specific Garden we are talking about has any type Curbing or Stone work between the Turf/Grass and the Garden itself what I suggest is having the two separate from each other so Grass runners will not slip under and into the actual beds which can be a nightmare at some point. If you need assistance email me and I can direct you the right way. For any Perennial Garden you currently have I suggest you soon think about cleaning that Bed out for the Winter. This procedure should not be considered until we are well into October. Reasons for that is we have not had our first killing frost. Once that occurs you can then clip off all foliage to all Perennials and Ornamental Grasses right to the ground level, this encourages the plants to sprout good natural clean foliage next Spring making each plant come back and look great for the Spring color. This has not been the hottest Summer on record and we all lost alot of Plants myself included. Still, prune them down and hope for the best next year.
Back to that thought, this Summer has killed off many well established Trees and Shrubs, there are steps we can take to ensure the Tree or whatever you have that looks dead, try to snap off small branches if they snap off easily and do not have color inside the branch looking deep brown chances are you have lost that Plant or Tree. If you have new Construction on a newer Home you might want to ask your builder to come and take a look at any Tree or Shrub they planted. It is very possible they will need to remove the existing Plant and plant a new one but ask them to wait until February or March, reason being we are still in a major drought and I believed all along we are experiencing frequent Drought in Texas the past 15 years and the span is longer, add in record heat and most if not all newly planted plants/trees have died or will. Keep that in mind and hold the builder at bay to replace any Plants that did not make it this Summer. Personally I do not know why any Builder would plant anything for the last 6-12 months there was a 90% chance each if not all would make it. Under-Developed Plants have no chance in this type of weather pattern. If you need advice on any of this email me please and I can see what you are not sure of.
For my weekly two Landscape Terms and their meaning for this week are:
1./ Term: Sooty Mold - Desc: A Black Fungal deposit on foliage. It indicates the presence of sucking insects.
2./ Term: Melting Out - Desc: A condition in which herbaceous suddenly collapse wither up and die. Sometimes the dead Tissue is slimy to the touch.
For my Weekly Tree/Shrub/Flower/Ornamental Grass I have researched good Healthy choice that can withstand extended Drought periods and long term rainfall deficits. Keep these picks aside so you can consider them in a future Garden.
Tree of the Week: Red Maple - Fast growing shade Tree that show's off its beauty each Fall. Though this Tree requires a little more moisture it is known to withstand longer drought periods. More native in East Texas but is popular in North Texas as well. Height: 40ft Spread: 25ft. Only need one of these.
Shrub of the Week: Carissa Holly - An outstanding Dwarf dense growing Shrub. The leaves are dark glassy looking making this one unique looking. An unusual looking Shrub that can add beauty to any form of Landscaped Gardens. Height: 3ft Spread: 3ft.
Flower of the Week: Sedum - Flowers range in color from hite/Yellow/Pink/and Red to Purple. This plant/flower is most noted for foreground type Perennial Gardens making for a groundcover of sorts. Unique plant that can be considered for any Garden setting.
Ornamental Grass of the Week: Zebra Grass - Want to make your Garden a top conversation topic in your neighborhood plant a few of these unique specimen Ornamental grass. The Green leaves with Yellow-Gold hands Pinkish-Copper tassles in late summer makes this Grass look great in the Garden. Height: 6ft Spread: 4ft.
That is my report for this week. I am always willing to give our Community open and honest advice free of charge as always. We all know the status of our water shortages and with forecasters basically saying what I said several years ago this drought is going to continue on all Winter into the Summer of 2012 and beyond and let's hope this is not true because this latest drought is only 18 months old and yet Lake Levels exceed that to the 4 year drought in the early 2000's. It scares me to think of the consequences many parts of the Country have already had to deal with. The forecast for October-January is unusually dry and warm both recipes to carry this drought well into 2012. Keeping Frisco clean of trash is always advised and appreciated for the many that are proud of their City. Please for all our sakes do not throw any cigarette butt out of your windows while driving, carry a cup with water in it inside the Vehicle and disposing it there sparing Grass Fires that will affect Homes and Businesses. The ground is timber dry and will take nothing to ignite a Fire threatning Lifestock, lives and businesses/homes.
When I see our soldiers on the news it brings back memories to me, I am so very proud of each and every one of them. They are fighting two fronts one for America and mostly to the Countries of Iraq and Afghanistan it is those citizens we are protecting and teaching so we can withdrawal one day soon and turn the Country over to their leadership. I say a short prayer every morning for each and every one of them, I too have a 21 year old Nephew that is in Afghanistan and I pray Jonathon McFeely comes home safely to us here in North Texas. On the note I will close for this week.
If I can be of assistance please call on me at the email address for my home glenn.kopanski@sbcglobal.net.
I am more than happy to assist. If you need more selections of Trees/Shrubs/Flowers/Palm Trees/Groundcovers/Ornamental Grasses contact me, I have a large list of plants for you and each are drought and heat resistant. That is it for the week. Take care all and stay safe.
My Best to you all, Glenn E Kopanski
