Volume 10, Issue 19 - September 15, 2011

Hello Frisco Friends!

Welcome to another informative issue of The Frisco Community Newsletter, now in our 10th year as the most read publication of its kind in our city.

As you may already know, in 2001, I (Matt) started the newsletter before I was elected to the Frisco City Council as a comprehensive grass-roots initiative to let people know what was going on in the city, and for me to be able to communicate my thoughts about various issues.

After being termed out after 6 years on council in May 2008, my wife Erika and I chose to continue the weekly newsletter to assist area non-profits, schools and places of worship to get the word out about their organizations and events at no charge to them. Ten years later, the majority of the content of this publication still consists of those submissions.

As mentioned in the past, a number of items in the newsletter are repeated as we add new subscribers every week. As a result, you will notice the word "NEW" in front of every item that is appearing for the first time and "UPDATED" for those items that have been in before but had some kind of change.

This week's Newsletter Sponsor is our long-time friends at Debonair Custom Cleaning. Between the kids being back in school and their various activities keeping parents running all over the place, there's nothing wrong with considering occasional help when it comes to keeping your home a happy (and clean) home. Erika and I have used DeBonair for years and highly recommend them for consistently great service. We also applaud the fact that that they use all "green" products - a huge plus. Owner Debbie & her team are simply the best! Read below to find out why DeBonair has been making mommies happier, providing peace of mind & more family time for the last 5 years, as well as a very compelling offer to get started with them.

Also, read about Frisco Fights FAT's Biggest Loser Competition. When you think about it, NOW is the perfect time to shed the pounds you keep talking about so that you're on the 'right track' come the holidays in a few months. You have a much better chance of resisting the 'culinary temptation of the seasons' when you've had a head start to a healthier you! Many participants of founder & leader Matt Schultz's class have walked away with hundreds of dollars in cash payouts. Erika has attended some of his classes and was blown away at the wealth of knowledge and  sincerity that Matt has for the program and attendees' success. He's been doing these classes for many years and has built his program around the fact that we're all "busy" - he will show you a different way of looking at food that will help answer the simple as well as the more complex "whys" of food & exercise. The next contest & class period starts this Saturday, September 17th, and info on how to register is below. Be sure to let us know how you're doing if you join - we love to hear success stories & want to cheer you on, too!

The Texas Tornado have announced that The Tony Curtale Show will return to the airwaves for a sixth season. The show features Tornado Head Coach and General Manager Tony Curtale as he sits down with Tornado play-by-play broadcaster Corey Hersch to discuss the team and all things hockey. Please remember that we are only as good as our readers who submit info to us! Frisco is a diverse community and we will consider submissions that meet our criteria as they affect our community. Remember that although an event or organization may not be for you, it will be for our other readers and we are committed, as we've been the past 10 years, to "be the messenger" getting info out to the masses through this newsletter email blast.

After this email is blasted out to our subscribers we later post it online in the Past Issues section of our website.

Please "Like" Us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter for breaking news in Frisco and timely updates in between our weekly newsletters.

We encourage you to visit our website to submit your community listing, inquire about advertising your business, check out past issues, and subscribe or unsubscribe to the newsletter.

FRISCO COMMUNITY THEATRE PRESENTS WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION:

The Frisco Community Theatre, following three highly successful runs, continues its 2011 season with a production of Agatha Christie's courtroom drama, Witness for the Prosecution. The play revolves around the shocking murder of a wealthy spinster. It will be presented in the Black Box Theater in the Frisco Discovery Center.

The show, which opened last Friday, will run for eight performances before closing on September 24, 2011. The popular Frisco Discovery Center houses the Black Box Theatre, where local performance groups and others can present theatrical productions, concerts, recitals and dance programs. It is located at 8004 Dallas Parkway, Frisco, TX 75034 - off Cotton Gin Road east of the Dallas North Tollway.

The Frisco Community Theatre has a rich history of presenting quality live productions from serious dramas to light comedies, from musicals to Shakespeare, dating back to its founding in 1984. It enjoyed a loyal local following until its theatre space was closed four years ago. The new Black Box Theatre has provided the stage needed for the new beginning of FCT.

Witness for the Prosecution is one of Agatha Christie's most intriguing murder mystery courtroom dramas. The place: London, England; the time: 1953. A murder has occurred and Leonard Vole, a bit of a drifter, is the prime suspect. He is arrested and put on trial. Although circumstantial evidence is damning, Leonard convinces even the perceptive Sir Wilfred Robarts Q.C., defense counsel, that he is innocent of the crime. In the mounting tension of the trial, there are amazing developments, full of unexpected twists and turns that keep the audience guessing right up to the surprising ending.

Performances are at 8:00PM on Friday and Saturday evenings, September 16, 17, 23, 24 and at 2:30PM for the Sunday matinee on September 18. Ticket prices are $19 for the evening shows and $17 for the matinee performance. There is a $2 discount for seniors age 60 and above, students and military. A $1 service charge per ticket applies if paying with a credit card.

The last three productions of the Frisco Community Theatre sold out, so you are urged to buy your tickets early so you can see this not- to- be- missed play. Tickets can be purchased at the FCT website. For more information call 972-370-2266 or email them.

The Frisco Police Department recently initiated a new program called "Take Me Home," which is aimed at assisting those individuals who cannot identify himself or herself or where they live. Unfortunately, police officers routinely encounter mental health consumers who are unable to communicate with officers about who they are, where they live, or who can help care for them. This program is designed specifically to quickly find answers for both the officer and person in need.

"Take Me Home" is a free service available to anyone in the City of Frisco. Families or individuals can fill out an online form on the police department's web site that includes a recent digital photograph of the individual, height, weight, and other identifying information, as well as emergency contacts. The information submitted to the police department is kept in a secure database that can be quickly accessed by police personnel when contact is made with people in need of help.

The Frisco Police Department's Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Program assisted in the implementation of the "Take Me Home" program, and is dedicated to providing a more professional and humane response to individuals in serious mental health crisis. This program has resulted in the successful enrollment of 53 members in its first year.

For more information on the "Take Me Home" program or to fill out an online form for you or a family member, visit the website or  contact them by email.

The mission of the City of Frisco Public Art Program is to promote cultural, aesthetic, and economic vitality in Frisco by integrating the work of artists into public places, civic infrastructure and private development. This facility with its open atrium design and tall limestone walls has proven to be an exceptional venue to showcase the artistic excellence of our local and regional artists.

The City of Frisco seeks two dimensional works of art by artist or arts organizations from the Frisco and the surrounding area for the 5th installment of Frisco's Art in the Atrium series. This exhibition is part of the city's ongoing exhibition program series at Frisco's City Hall to showcase regional artistic endeavors and to encourage public dialogue, understanding and enjoyment of visual art. The programs goal is to reflect the artistic excellence in and around Frisco and to promote the city's cultural and economic initiatives.

The 2011 Art in the Atrium Exhibition is scheduled for October 31st, 2011 through August 26th, 2012. Deadline to submit is September 23. Click here for more information.

NEW - TEXAS DEMOCRATIC WOMEN OF COLLIN COUNTY:

Monday September 26, 2011 is the next General Meeting of Texas Democratic Women of Collin County.   Join us at 6:45pm at the Preston Ridge Campus of Collin College, 9700 Wade Blvd Frisco, Texas, Founders Hall, Shawnee Room F148.   As always there will be refreshments and time to socialize.

September's meeting features Bobette Brasfield of Texas Conservation Alliance, which runs a program called Smarter Water for North Texas. Ms. Brasfield says, "The good news is that we have enough water in existing reservoirs to meet our water needs for the next 50 plus years! We can avoid new reservoirs which would destroy many thousands of acres of bottomland hardwood forest while uprooting families and harming existing local economies if we make the right allocation and <make wise> decisions." Join us as we explore the low-impact water supply options that will allow us to avoid the monetary and human costs associated with unnecessary new reservoirs.

Bobette Brasfield is a native Texan from Grand Prairie. She is retired from Texas Instruments where she served as a Division Controller and Finance Manager.  Bobette has a BA in Business Management and a Master of Science Degree in Environmental Science with a concentration in water issues from the University of North Texas.  She has been an environmental educator for many years, working with the City of Coppell, Texas Master Naturalist Program, U.S. National Park service, Texins Dive Club and Dallas Audubon Society.

Join us as we explore the low-impact water supply options that will allow us to avoid the monetary and human costs associated with unnecessary new reservoirs.

Benefits of Membership

As a member of Junior Frisco Women's League a young woman will learn to develop leadership skills and learn to help others in need while being active in their own community. Involvement in Jr. FWL can often be used towards school credits. This volunteer experience can give members an edge when applying for scholarships, honors, jobs and college. Hall Winery - Napa, CA

Erika & Matt Lafata (c) with her parents', Milton & Diane, at HALL Winery in Napa

Those who know us well also know that we love mixing business & pleasure! We headed to California's wine country recently for a few days before heading to to a work conference in San Francisco for the company I work for. What was great about this trip was that Erika's parents were celebrating their anniversary and Napa, CA was the scene of one of their first dates, a bicycle ride through the beautiful Napa countryside many years ago, & they hadn't been back since. So we thought it was time to take them back!

Knowing we had limited time in wine country, we wanted to take them to our favorite wineries which included

HALL Winery. Gracious philanthropists, art collectors and renowned in the business world (even here in Frisco -  think Hall Office Park) Kathryn and Craig Hall are also large land-owners & notable winemakers with two estate vineyards in Napa. They consistently produce fantastic varietals - one of our faves is the

2008 HALL Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon which we highly recommend at your next dinner party. However, you'll have to head west to find the 2008 vintage of their flagship wine - HALL "Kathryn Hall" Cab: the release date on Saturday, September 17th will be celebrated with a much anticipated soiree for wine club members/guests.

UPDATED - DRIVERS REJOICE! PART OF PRESTON ROAD FULLY OPENS MONDAY
Motorists get six lanes of elbow room between US 380 and Eldorado Parkway

Weather permitting, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and crews for Mario Sinacola and Sons will begin to fully open the north end of Preston Road (SH 289) beginning Monday, September 19, at 9 a.m. When the traffic switch is completed, around 4:30 p.m. the same day, drivers will have full use of three lanes in each direction between U.S. 380 and Eldorado Parkway.

Message boards will be set up on northbound and southbound Preston Road to inform the public of the traffic switch. During the traffic switch, motorists can expect short periodic delays and should proceed through the work zone with caution or consider taking an alternate route.

This work is part of a $35 million construction project to widen Preston Road (2-lanes to 6-lanes) from U.S. 380 to FM 3537 (Main Street) in Frisco. The project is expected to be complete by spring 2012. TxDOT and contractor Mario Sinacola and Sons, Excavating, Inc. would like to thank area drivers, local businesses, the City of Frisco, and Collin County for their continued patience and cooperation as crews work diligently to complete this project as soon, and as safely, as possible.

For additional transportation related information please visit the TxDOT website.

NEW - LANDSCAPE DESIGN/DETAIL (Mid September):

SUBMITTED BY: Glenn Everett Kopanski, United States Navy (Ret)

Glenn Kopanski

Watching the 9-11 ceremony tore a hole in my heart again seeing all that destruction yet beauty of what came of it. A gentle reminder to us all life is not a guarantee, so for all those who died that day in 2001 they are all heroes in my opinion. It is up to us to now shape our Nation to its full potential teaching a new generation to Love and Respect and not hate those not like us.

Week's topic: Trees

This crazy weather has now taken a toll on young Trees and the longer we get into this Drought/HeatWave we can expect to see even more established Trees perish. What I suggest is to do that weekly walk around your home and check everything out, writing in your Journal what needs to be looked at next Spring to see if it does come back. The Tree may not look dead now but could be and we will never know until the growing season begins next March. If you can snap off branches easily chances are you have lost that Tree. For me in my new home in Frisco Lakes both my Oaks are already dead but it shows whereas some will not. As your Trees age they tend to lose their vigor, decay can begin at the Trunk and major branches on a Tree's natural resistance weakens. Large dead branches, weaker growth and overall decline are indications this Tree has lived its true potential. The key to having healthy Trees on your property is to monitor them over their lifetimes. If the Tree is infested with insects you will never know if that Tree is dead until large branches begin falling. If this is the case the inside of each Trunk/Branch will be hollow. Any kind of Wind event can topple even the biggest Trees and if not caught could cause serious damage to the Home, Property like parked Cars and hoping not a Life. Be vigil and Pro-Active it can save you a lot of heartache and money.

This is the last month to fertilize your Trees. I suggest a deep root feeding normally performed by Landscape Companies like Scott's or TruGreen/ChemLawn. You can at the very least pound in fertilizer stakes watering the area three to four times with a Sprinkler or Hose. Setting the hose down in that area and allow a Drip for 3-4 hours will enhance the fertilizer that will go deep into the soil and roots. This is also a good time to take a look at your Tree's roots and where they are headed. Keep an eye on the largest roots because they can easily fracture your foundation. If that is noted you can use tools to remove those large roots by cutting them off. As long as you have not interrupted the Tap roots that go deep into the ground you are okay.

We are entering the time of year to do an overview of your Trees. Take a look at their balance on all four sides. Look North to South and East to West see if that Trees appearance is interrupting the Sun's penetration. If that is noted then you will have to evenly prune off a layer of branches to allow future sunlight to reach your Turf/Sod. Not doing so can result in your Lawns look and you will then begin seeing a lot of thinning I call it, turning that part of your Lawn into Mud.  If you plan on pruning this Fall my suggestion is to wait until Middle November and Middle December. It is then even for Texas bug infestation from cuts can occur. Try and keep in mind if you are removing one Middle to Large limbs to keep it even taking out others all around your Tree. This keeps the balance correct and less likely to knock your Tree down from High wind storms in the Winter and the following Spring. Cleaning out any suckers from the inside around the main Trunk too keeps the

Tree clean looking.

Now for my two Landscape Terms and Descriptions to enhance our Language when we are talking about Landscape Language:

1./ Term: Bromelinds - Desc:  Popular, easy care houseplants that slowly lose vigor and die after blooming but can be re-grown from side shoots or pups.

2./ Term: Peat Moss - Desc:  Organic matter from peat sedges (United States) or Sphagnum (Canada) often used to improve soil texture. The acidity makes it ideal for boosting or maintaining soil acidity which improves drainage that adds in air to the soil.

For this week's Tree/Shrub/Flower I am providing you with selections/choices for the future needs of any Landscape upgrades with the knowledge these picks tolerate our harsh climate.

Tree of the Week: Pinyon Pine - Consider this small horizontal branching Tree, symmetrical in its Youth and flat crowned with age. More native to west Texas it grows well here as well. Height: 15ft Spread/Width: 10ft.

Shrub of the Week: Bottle Brush - Spectacular Crimson-Red Bottlelike flowers blooming sporadically throughout the Spring into late Summer and early Fall. Its dark green leaves bring it up-right to show off its wonderful beauty. Height: 8ft Spread/Width: 5ft.

Flower of the Week: Garden Mums - This pick is one of the most popular perennials available this time of year. Multiple color choices can add some Late Summer/to Late Fall color when all the others are dying off for the year. No Height/Width noted.

That is my weekly report for you. I think we all are aware of this situation we are in right now Statewide. The key is to keep whatever tender plants you have alive. Warm seasoned grasses can take care of themselves so pay more attention to your Trees and Plants than the lawn. There is not enough water on the planet to keep any form of grass alive right now or at least to its full potential. Keep the more expensive plants alive for now. I see no end in this and as LaNina is enforcing itself in the Pacific Ocean we will find ourselves left out for moisture. Using our City Water with respect now and into the future will ensure we have drinking water a year from now. We all, myself included, need more than ever to be WaterSmart. Two whammies with record heat and an exceptional drought level spells trouble for our future. So, use the drip systems and if you do not have them you might want to invest in having them this way the water is going right to its source the roots which is what counts. Spraying Sprinkler systems are good but 1/3 of that water is wasted by Wind or misplacement of the head. Keeping our city nice and clean from cigarette butts and trash is appreciated by all. Keep in mind please not to throw any cigarette butt out the window while driving use a soda can in the car to put them, the ground and grasses are so dry a lit butt can start a huge grass fire and take homes and lives with it so it is not wise to do this especially right now.

If I can be of assistance please call on me at the email address for my home glenn.kopanski@sbcglobal.net.

I am more than happy to assist. If you need more selections of Trees/Shrubs/Flowers/Palm Trees/Groundcovers/Ornamental Grasses contact me, I have a large list of plants for you and each are drought and heat resistant. That is it for the week. Take care all and stay safe.

My Best to you all, Glenn E Kopanski
