Volume 10, Issue 18 - September 8, 2011

Dear Friends,

Welcome to another informative issue of The Frisco Community Newsletter, now in our 10th year as the most read publication of its kind in our city.

As you may already know, in 2001, I (Matt) started the newsletter before I was elected to the Frisco City Council as a comprehensive grass-roots initiative to let people know what was going on in the city, and for me to be able to communicate my thoughts about various issues. After being termed out after 6 years on council in May 2008, my wife Erika and I chose to continue the weekly newsletter to assist area non-profits, schools and places of worship to get the word out about their organizations and events at no charge to them. Ten years later, the majority of the content of this publication still consists of those submissions.

As mentioned in the past, a number of items in the newsletter are repeated as we add new subscribers every week. As a result, you will notice the word "NEW" in front of every item that is appearing for the first time and "UPDATED" for those items that have been in before but had some kind of change.

Be sure to check out this week's Newsletter Sponsor, Frisco Fights FAT's Biggest Loser Competition. Work your way to a healthier you with the added benefit of possibly walking away with hundreds of dollars in cash payouts, as well as helping Frisco Family Services.  Erika has attended some of the classes and was blown away at the wealth of knowledge she gained and really was inspired by the sincerity that the class leader, Matt Schultz, had for the program and attendees' success. The next contest period starts next Saturday, September 17 and info on how to register is below.

Texas Tornado hockey is back and they're headed to Dr Pepper Stars Center in McKinney for an exhibition game tomorrow night against the Corpus Christi Rays. The Tornado, a member of the North American Hockey League (NAHL), is the most exciting brand of hockey around and we hope you can get out to the games this season! Great seats are still available by calling the Tornado office at 972-335-9800 or visiting their website.

We've added a new feature to our website, Frisco News NOW. This is designed to let you know about breaking news and updates in between our weekly newsletters. Read more about that below as well.

Please remember that we are only as good as our readers who submit info to us! Frisco is a diverse community and we will consider submissions that meet our criteria as they affect our community. Remember that although an event or organization may not be for you, it will be for our other readers and we are committed, as we've been the past 10 years, to "be the messenger" getting info out to the masses through this newsletter email blast.

After this email is blasted out to our subscribers we later post it online in the Past Issues section of our website.

Please "Like" Us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter for breaking news in Frisco and timely updates in between our weekly newsletters.

We encourage you to visit our website to submit your community listing, inquire about advertising your business, check out past issues, and subscribe or unsubscribe to the newsletter.

Have a fantastic week!

NEW - MEET THE ORGANIZATION: THE COMMUNITY FOR PERMANENT SUPPORTED HOUSING

The mission of the organization, Community for Permanent Supported Housing  is to provide residential options in Collin County / North Texas for adults with Intellectual / Developmental Disabilities (IDD)

  • to provide a safe, self-reliant community for these underserved adults,
  • to offer easy access to social  and medical services, and
  • to enable these wonderful adults to pursue their best lives.
CSPH photo

Mike, Michele, Brittney & David all look forward to living with friends in the near future.

A Housing Research Team has been established to go into the North Texas community and share the mission of establishing more housing for adults with IDD, quantify the need, and identify approaches.  One aspect of this effort is encouraging family members who need housing for their loved ones now and into the (far) future to complete a simple 4 question survey.

If you may need housing for an adult with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) in the next 30 (thirty) years,  please fill out the brief survey online. This will help them plan their program.  They'll report results monthly in their newsletter, CPSH Housing News, and on their website.

It's the only survey in the state that asks parents of all intellectual and developmental disabilities  (regardless of labels like Down Syndrome or Fragile X) or funding to identify their housing needs.  The results of the survey are receiving attention from leaders in Texas.

NEW - FRISCO COMMUNITY THEATRE PRESENTS WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION - OPENING NIGHT TOMORROW:

The Frisco Community Theatre, following three highly successful runs, continues its 2011 season with a production of Agatha Christie's courtroom drama, Witness for the Prosecution. The play revolves around the shocking murder of a wealthy spinster. It will be presented in the Black Box Theater in the Frisco Discovery Center.

The show opens tomorrow, Friday, September 9 and will run for eight performances, closing on September 24, 2011. The popular Frisco Discovery Center houses the Black Box Theatre, where local performance groups and others can present theatrical productions, concerts, recitals and dance programs. It is located at 8004 Dallas Parkway, Frisco, TX 75034 - off Cotton Gin Road east of the Dallas North Tollway.

The Frisco Community Theatre has a rich history of presenting quality live productions from serious dramas to light comedies, from musicals to Shakespeare, dating back to its founding in 1984. It enjoyed a loyal local following until its theatre space was closed four years ago. The new Black Box Theatre has provided the stage needed for the new beginning of FCT.

Witness for the Prosecution is one of Agatha Christie's most intriguing murder mystery courtroom dramas. The place: London, England; the time: 1953. A murder has occurred and Leonard Vole, a bit of a drifter, is the prime suspect. He is arrested and put on trial. Although circumstantial evidence is damning, Leonard convinces even the perceptive Sir Wilfred Robarts Q.C., defense counsel, that he is innocent of the crime. In the mounting tension of the trial, there are amazing developments, full of unexpected twists and turns that keep the audience guessing right up to the surprising ending.

Performances are at 8:00PM on Friday and Saturday evenings, September 9, 10, 16, 17, 23, 24 and at 2:30PM for Sunday matinees, September 11 and 18, 2011. Ticket prices are $19 for the evening shows and $17 for the matinees. There is a $2 discount for seniors age 60 and above, students and military. A $1 service charge per ticket applies if paying with a credit card.

The last three productions of the Frisco Community Theatre sold out, so you are urged to buy your tickets early so you can see this not- to- be- missed play. Tickets can be purchased at the FCT website. For more information call 972-370-2266 or email them.

For more information contact  Howard Korn, President of the Frisco Community Theatre 214-212-9616.

Hunt, Director of Global Theological Education at SMU's Perkins School of Theology. He is an authority on Muslim-Christian relations and teaches a wide range of programs on intercultural immersion.

Sunday, October 2nd, marking one year after the grand opening of the Frisco Discovery Center, the dialogue continues with "The Gospel Meets Other Religions: World Events and Challenges." Dr. Carlos F. Cardoza-Orlandi. Professor of Global Christianities and Mission Studies, Perkins-SMU, focuses his work on the challenges and promises of a multicultural Christian community with multiple centers of vitality and mission.

Legacy Presbyterian is a new congregation and development of Presbyterian Church (USA) and meets each Sunday 10:30am at Carroll Elementary School. Glen Hunihan, Organizing Pastor, has been actively involved in a number of New Church Developments during the last fifteen years. He comes to Legacy with a vision for God's activity in Frisco. PHOTO OF THE WEEK
Matt and Erika Lafata on the USS Midway

Matt & Erika on the retired aircraft carrier USS Midway in San Diego in front of the USS Oriskany

While in San Diego recently, Erika and I had a chance to visit the most-visited floating ship museum in the world: The USS Midway Museum.

We were in awe entering a floating city at sea and walk in the footsteps of 225,000 Midway sailors who served our country.

We were amazed by her sheer size and complexity. It was a fascinating self-guided tour walking through the different decks, reading about various roles and also about battles that the Midway was a part of. It really gave us great insight into how our brave service personnel function on these massive battleships.

With the 10th anniversary of 9/11, Erika & I are  extremely thankful for the men and women who put their lives on the line on a daily basis so that we can continue to enjoy the freedoms that those who served before them have worked so hard to protect, such as those who served on this ship. -  Matt Lafata

NEW - DRIVERS REJOICE! PART OF PRESTON ROAD FULL OPENS NEXT WEEK
Motorists get six lanes of elbow room between US 380 and Eldorado Parkway

Weather permitting, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and crews for Mario Sinacola and Sons will begin to fully open the north end of Preston Road (SH 289) beginning Thursday, September 15, at 9 a.m. When the traffic switch is completed, around 4:30 p.m. the same day, drivers will have full use of three lanes in each direction between U.S. 380 and Eldorado Parkway.

Message boards will be set up on northbound and southbound Preston Road to inform the public of the traffic switch. During the traffic switch, motorists can expect short periodic delays and should proceed through the work zone with caution or consider taking an alternate route.

This work is part of a $35 million construction project to widen Preston Road (2-lanes to 6-lanes) from U.S. 380 to FM 3537 (Main Street) in Frisco. The project is expected to be complete by spring 2012. TxDOT and contractor Mario Sinacola and Sons, Excavating, Inc. would like to thank area drivers, local businesses, the City of Frisco, and Collin County for their continued patience and cooperation as crews work diligently to complete this project as soon, and as safely, as possible.

For additional transportation related information please visit the TxDOT website.

NEW - TRAFFIC LANES SWITCHED AT 4 INTERSECTIONS ALONG FM 423 TOMORROW, SEPTEMBER 9:

As part of TxDOT's widening project, traffic will be switched at four intersections along FM 423 on Friday, September 9.

Traffic on FM 423 will remain in the same lanes while traffic on the cross streets of Lebanon Road, Del Webb Boulevard, Stonebrook Parkway, and Main Street/King Road will be switched into different lanes. The details of each traffic switch are described below:

All traffic on Del Webb Boulevard will be switched to the south side of the road at FM 423. East and westbound traffic will now share the southern half of the road while the northern half of the intersection is reconstructed.

All traffic on Lebanon Road will be switched to the south side of the road at FM 423. East and westbound traffic will now share the southern half of the road while the northern half of the intersection is reconstructed.

Traffic on Stonebrook Parkway will be switched so that east and westbound traffic will flow on opposite sides of the median again.

All traffic on Main Street/King Road will be switched to the north side of the road at FM 423. East and westbound traffic will now share the northern half of the road while the southern half of the intersection is reconstructed. The exception is eastbound traffic on King Road that wishes to turn right onto FM 423 will use a turn lane on the southern half of the road.

These traffic switches will change the alignment of each cross street where they connect to FM 423 so motorists in all directions at those intersections should pay attention to new lane shifts and the new location of stop lines.

Motorists are urged to use caution along FM 423 as people become accustomed to the new traffic patterns at the intersection.

NEW - LANDSCAPE DESIGN/DETAIL (Early to Mid September):

SUBMITTED BY: Glenn Everett Kopanski, United States Navy (Ret)

Fall will be here before we know it, so now we can begin to clean up the mess we all have

had to endure this Summer. This will go down as one of the hottest summers the Dallas/Ft

Worth Metroplex has ever had and that says a lot for this part of the country.

Chances are you lost at the very least a Shrub. Sadly, though, some well established trees did not make it. If you think you are one of those who think they may have lost any you can visually see the damage

by snapping a limb. If it snaps right off and has an inner core or a blackish color inside you

have lost that tree. My advice if this is an established tree (3-4 years or older) my advice is to have

it cut to the trunk line at the level of your property and allow who does the work to take it away

and use it for firewood. It can be costly as well, do some shopping around and compare and be

aware most contractors are honest people but there are some that would not hesitate to take

advantage of you, so go with the gut feeling and hire who you think will do the job and do it good

at a resonable price. Depending on the size of the tree and weather you want the stmup grinded

will determine the final costs. My own advice is if you have a tree that is 5-10 years old you should

be looking with stump grinding at $450. The older it is and the trunk size can run well into the

low thousands. If in doubt, contact me and I can come take a look or send me a photo via email.

My topic of conversation today is going to be trees: trees often, and in most cases, live longer than we

do. Age will eventually take its toll on them just as every living thing on this planet. Different trees,

like flowering Crab Apples or Purple Leafed Plums, live 15 to 20 years, whereas larger, more dominant

ones tend to live close to 100 years, like the everlasting Live Oaks evident everywhere we go in our

state. As a tree ages, decay may form in their trunks, forcing major branches to lose their natural

resistence which weakens large dead branches, forcing them to tip in a wind storm, a down draft

or a collapsing thunderstorm can force winds to blow over 100mph forcing all weakened trees to come down.

This is where I have stepped in to encourage and teach everyone to prune the trees on your property and not once, but every year. Make note of any damage and follow up with corrective action the following season or when the weather begins to cool down. Planting trees are always a mystery to so many that have come to me for advice. Truly the best time to plant any tree is in late October right through early in January.

We want to plant at that time because trees are dormant during the coldest months and if planted on time, that tree can establish itself during the warmer winter months with fresh, healthy foliage the next

Spring. We may not know it but it is possible any tree on any property has been struck by lightning, now odds are against us, but it can happen and if you do that weekly walk around your property like I always suggest and look for any damage to the home or landscape. If you see a larger branch leaning over leaving itself open for insects contact someone to come and get it pruned off as clean as they can. Make sure you document it all with pictures before and after in order to meet most Homeowners Insurance plans;  those pictures might save you a lot of heartache later.

As far as watering trees I have always mentioned to anyone that they should prepare a drip system around the entire trees that will show a mist just below the ground. For our part of the Country I highly request we all convert over to misting systems, and for landscaping and drip systems to all trees and important shrubs and do away with pointers. This, of course, unless you have a lot of property. However, if you've got the average small yard, I do not suggest any watering systems above the ground

less the misters. The reason I say that is the water and your money can go to the source using alternative watering systems, whereas above the ground systems can cause 30% waste or higher

from your water going on to the streets or on sidewalks. Any speed of wind seems to blow water everywhere but where you want it to go, so consider switching over to alternative systems to ensure your hard-working money goes where it is supposed to.

Trees are important in Texas; monitoring them is an even more important way to ensure they are good clean trees free of disease or bug infestation that can kill them. Enjoy them next to your patio with Friends and Family and know they are in good condition and not constantly in fear they will tip over or a branch falls where it is not suppose to fall. So, my advice to you is to monitor and enjoy.

For my two weekly Landscaping Terms and Descriptions:

1./ Term: Insecticide

Desc:  Any compound or product or other gardening aid used to kill-control- or eliminate insects.

2./ Term: Herbaceous Perrenials

Desc:  Plants that live from year to year without producing woody stems.

Now, for my last list: my Trees/Shrubs/Flowers and Ornamental Grasses of the Week. Please keep

in mind my selections are "Texas-Friendly" and can tolerate excessive heating periods and extensive

droughts. If you need more selections please email me and I can send you more selections with a brief

description of each.

Tree of the Week: Bald Cypress

This is a large upright Tree that thrives in wet waterlogged conditions as well as very dry conditions.

Fall foliage turns a OrangeBrownish color. Pyridimal shaped when young more rounded as it ages.

My advice is to only plant this Tree as far from your property as you can as the only bad thing I can

say about this Cypress is it is top root heavy. It can kill off a Lawn within years, so please be aware

of this warning but beautiful in the Spring with Lime leaves. Hgt: 70ft Spread: 40ft.

Shrub of the Week: Skyrocket Juniper

This is about the only Pine that provides he most columnar style out there. Show's off it's Blue-

Green foliage, great up close to the house of in a rock garden. Hgt: 20ft Spread: 3ft.

Flower of the Week: Russian Sage

Spikes of Lavender flowers are home during the Summer and can be pruned to the ground for it's

return home the following Spring to give you more enjoyment. A beauty in any Garden most

shown off in Rocky-type gardens and to top the list my favorite bird is drawn in for it's daily

nectar the Hummingbird. Want these unique birds in your yard plant these.

That is my report for this week. As always, if you need me for anything I do free home visits and

advice over email as a Community Service for you. My commitment of Conserving our water is to

remind everyone that this is an ongoing drought and I believe we will not see any relief until 2012-2013, so it is now we must begin thinking of alternative Landscape Designs. Going with a Desert scene can

bring in a different attitude for your Community using a Wash type system with larger boulders

adding in a sense of "Berm" to the Garden meaning an upright type garden. Using Landscape

curbing adds in to the mix with mixed herbs for aroma set an old wagon wheel off to its side

can match the Desert type garden, using imagination can not only add to the Home but it can

add to it's value. I believe in using groundcovers for property that is slanted to reduce the threat

of errosion. Ornamental type grasses too can stop errosion and add in a maintaince free plant

that needs little to no water at all. If we change our Landscaped yards to maintenance free type

gardens that require little water we might be able to match the use of daily water in the area

to new construction and population growth, otherwise we might see water become a sparse comodity

that will reduce the home's overall value.

Lastly, my comment of the week: If we treat each other the way we like to be treated imagine the

world our children might be able to live in. The key is to make each equal yet respect each other for

their unique selves. I still remember (at age 54) the song "Imagine"- one I took with me all my

life. As an Ex-soldier myself I know what these heroes are going through overseas, let's all say a

prayer for their safe return. I want that more than anyone as I visit the Vets at the VA Hospitals

when I am there and see and hear stories that are heart wrenching. I salute each and everyone of

them. On that last comment, I will close for this week. If I can be of assistance please notify me via

my home email address. Take care all, Glenn
