Feeding Programs for Drought Stressed Herds

Traditionally, grazed forages provide beef cows the majority of their nutrients during the spring and summer months. However, during droughts when forage production stops, alternative feeds and feeding programs need to be used utilized until forages are growing again.

When deciding on and alternative feeding program there are several options to consider. The goal is to get the cows re-bred, maintain pounds produced per cow, and minimize feed cost per pound of calf sold. Daily feed costs are going to increase during a drought. Fall Bird Feeding

Now is a great time to get your bird feeders ready for fall.  Set aside one afternoon to clean and wash them.  Consider using a cleaning solution of one part vinegar to four parts water.  Remember, it's important to rinse your feeders thoroughly and let them dry completely before refilling them.

To attract your favorite birds it helps to know what type of seed they prefer.  Your basic bag of mixed seeds includes millet, cracked corn, small sunflower seeds and milo.  These will draw the attention of jays and doves.  If you want to see chickadees and cardinals at your feeder, try putting out black oiled sunflower seeds.  If you want to attract finches, nuthatches and siskins then offer thistle seed.  For woodpeckers have suet cakes on hand.

Mansfield Feed has all your wild bird supplies.  Stop in for your seed, feeders and birdhouses.  And don't forget to put out water! With the warm days and drought continuing our feathered friends will appreciate the drink!
