Understanding Childhood Apraxia

By Becky Spivey, M.Ed.

This article is reprinted with permission of Super Duper Publications®.

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a very specific motor speech disorder. Children with this diagnosis have difficulty planning and consistently producing sequences of speech movements using their tongue, lips, jaw, and palate. These difficulties limit a listener's understanding of the child's speech and prevent the child from producing intelligible speech. A child with a diagnosis of childhood apraxia of speech specifically experiences problems in programming and planning his/her speech movements.

Speech Plans

When we try to communicate, an idea forms in our brain as to what we want to say. Our brain thinks of words for our messages and puts them in the correct order using correct grammar. This information then translates into a series of highly coordinated movements of the articulators-the lips, jaw, tongue, and soft palate. The brain tells the muscles that control the articulators the exact order and timing of the movements to produce intelligible speech. Children with apraxia of speech may not be able to accurately and consistently produce speech motor plans. This may be due to neurological impairments or developmental disabilities.

Make Healthy Eating Fun For Kids!

Families That Cook Together Eat Together

By Kia Robertson

Kia Robertson is a mom and the creator of the Today I Ate A Rainbow kit; a tool that helps parents establish healthy habits by setting the goal of eating a rainbow of fruits and vegetables every day. Kia is passionate about creating tools that help parents raise healthy kids!

Putting together healthy well balanced meals and eating as a family is a pretty big challenge for a lot of families these days with our full schedules and busy lives! It can sometimes feel too hard or overwhelming especially when we strive for perfection. I think perfection gets in the way of progress...I like to look at healthy eating as a series of baby steps and choices that eventually become habit.

Every family has a different dynamic and different priorities when it comes to striking a healthy food balance. Some might focus on serving protein others might focus on dairy or getting whole grains into their family meals. In our house our biggest priority is to eat a rainbow of colorful fruits and vegetables! A colorful diet is one of the best defenses against chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer and diabetes so that is why it tops our list of healthy eating priorities. By being aware of the colors we are eating it helps us be more mindful of our choices for meals and snacks. For example snack time at our house always means a fruit or a vegetable...that is it! Having a food rule like that makes it easier to get in our minimum 5 fruits and vegetables a day! We also do our best to always have a colorful veggie with our lunch and dinners!

As far as getting a balanced meal together and enjoying it as a family we have a few things that we do around here....
