Current Projects of the NNPN
| |
The NNPN is constantly working on new and exciting projects that aim to meet the needs of the NNPN membership by facilitating the implementation of evidence-based practices (EBPs). The current projects include:
The Steering Committee is the organizing committee for the NNPN with each of the workgroups reporting to it. The committee sets strategic directions for the NNPN in concert with the workgroups and NNPN member organizations. The Steering Committee would welcome your thoughts and ideas on how to improve the NNPN. The committee meets on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 2 p.m. EST via teleconference. Dr. Marita Titler (University of Michigan School of Nursing) is the Chair of the Steering Committee.
The Education & Networking Workgroup has updated the EBP resources section of the NNPN website and is continuing to work on guidelines for submitting manuscripts on the NNPN website, as well as putting together a description and formulating a process for members of the group to be peer educator/adviser volunteers to assist NNPN members in preparing for facilitating online Journal Club sessions. Julie McNulty of Alaska Native Medical Center has newly joined the NNPN Education and Networking Group, replacing Jill Montague also of the Alaska Native Medical Center. The Education & Networking group meets on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 2 p.m. EST via teleconference. Please welcome new leadership, Jean Cody (new Co-Chair; Southwestern Vermont Medical Center) to this workgroup, along with our current Co-Chair Dr. Michelle Aebersold (University of Michigan School of Nursing).
The Community-Based Partnership Research (CBPR) Workgroup continues to work on possible grant opportunities of interest to the NNPN members. The CBPR group meets on the 3rd Tuesday of every other month at 2 p.m. EST via teleconference and welcomes your ideas. Leadership of the CBPR workgroup includes: Dr. Marita Titler (Co-Chair; University of Michigan School of Nursing) and Nancy Weber (Co-Chair; Covenant/Wheaton-Franciscan, Waterloo, IA).
The Implementation Workgroup has published the Organizational Evidence-Based Practice Toolkit on the NNPN website. The workgroup is in the process of redesigning the work plan to focus on an evidence-based practice organization implementation process. This project is in the early stages and we would love to hear from you regarding your thoughts on organizational-wide implementation needs or ideas. The Implementation Workgroup meets via teleconference on a "to be determined basis" and its leadership includes: Dr. Susan Adams (Co-Chair; University of Iowa/Iowa City VA) and Dr. Roxanne Wilson (Co-Chair; St. Cloud Hospital, MN). Contact Dr. Roxanne Wilson at wilsonro@centracare.com if you have additional ideas or questions.
The Staff Nurse Workgroup has created documents called Eye on Evidence (EoE) that provide a snapshot of evidence on specific topics that are easy to use for a busy staff nurse. The Chairs have conducted a strategic analysis of the group that has brought forward a need to adjust meeting times, re-evaluate the purpose of the group, and to create guiding governance documents. The new meeting times are on the second Monday of the month at 4 p.m. EST. The group's purpose and governance documents are in the initial development stage with the outcomes expected within the month. The Chair of the Staff Nurse Workgroup is Anne McLeod (University of Michigan Health System).
Are any of these exciting projects of interest to you? Do you want to join one of our workgroups and participate in the NNPN projects? Or do you have an idea for a project for one of the workgroups? Please let us know by contacting nnpnetwork@umich.edu for more information or to share your ideas.

| Eye on Evidence | |
The NNPN Staff Nurse Workgroup has created a series of documents called Eye on Evidence (EoE) that provide a snapshot of the evidence on specific topics that are easy to use for a busy staff nurse. Staff nurses are on the front-line of patient care and can be strategic in making change to their practice. However, competing priorities and time constraints on the staff nurse create barriers to making change happen. Therefore, the EoE documents were created to provide a brief summary of traditional nursing practice, examples of a few research articles to support a change in this practice, a brief research review, and potential implications for updating current practice. The EoE empowers the nurse with data to stimulate discussions about practice in their current area. The EoE is not intended to represent all of the research in the literature. It is simply a snapshot on a specific topic to get you started!
Current EoEs posted include: 1) Reducing the Duration of Post-Operative Ileus Using Chewing Gum, and 2) Music Therapy. For more information, see http://nnpn.barclayconsulting.com/staff-nurses/eye-on-evidence. |

EBP Study Announcement
| |
Susan Adams, PhD, RN of the Comprehensive Access and Delivery Research and Evaluation (CADRE) Center at the Iowa City VA Medical Center, who is also a member of the NNPN Implementation Workgroup and Steering Committee, is conducting a study titled, "Reducing Falls and Fall-Related Injuries in Hospitalized Veterans." The primary objective of this study is to examine the feasibility of using an existing nursing collaborative - the National Nursing Practice Network (NNPN) - to implement evidence-based falls prevention interventions in four VA facilities. The project aims to improve inpatient safety and quality of care by addressing a known gap in care, and will build nursing capacity for implementing other evidence-based practices for inpatient care. In addition, this study will provide useful pilot data for a more definitive evaluation of the NNPN collaborative model for decreasing fall rates in VA medical centers nationally. To learn more about this study, please visit the NNPN website at

Congratulations Dr. Adams and keep up the great work! |
