 Capturing Opportunities

MAFRIMAFRI CORNER

 How do you spell SUCCESS?

What makes a community successful? David Ivan of Michigan State University Extension says it's all about investing in people, talent, creativity, innovation and the quality of our communities. Mr. Ivan was the keynote speaker at the recent Manitoba Association of Agricultural Societies conference in Brandon where he spoke to members of Ag Societies, 4-H leaders and economic development practitioners about creating "cool", successful small towns.

Twenty years ago, he may have encouraged us to attract big industry to our town in order to be successful, but times have changed. While success can be indicated by population growth and business success, it is likely to be achieved today not by courting new industry, but by supporting entrepreneurship, attracting young people, finding ways for people to connect in the community, working with your neighbours and investing in the assets, people and talents that already exist in your community. Fair Trade Certified Gimli Goes Fair Trade

On July 1, 2009, the municipality of Gimli was recognized as Manitoba's first Fair Trade Town and is one of only 14 Fair Trade Towns in Canada. TransFair Canada, the national fair trade certification organization, bases its recognition of Fair Trade Towns several criteria, such as a resolution being passed by the local political authority, the number of stores and cafes serving and selling fair trade products, and the establishment of a local fair trade committee to monitor adherence to and growth of fair trade in the community.

The idea of a "Fair Trade Town" was born in England in 1999, Read More...

Attracting Customers

Grouponworks.com

Are you looking to attract new customers?  Is your target market comprised of young, educated people who are socially active, both online and off?

Ever heard the saying, "It costs 5 times more to attract a new customer than to keep an old one."?  Groupon is hoping to defy these rules with a new twist to the traditional marketing campaign.

Groupon Works is an online marketing tool in which your company's coupon is featured as the deal of the day on groupon.com (to check out Groupon in Winnipeg, click here).  And while your small business will have to offer a deep discount on groupon and about half of the selling price of the coupon is given to groupon, entrepreneurs are still saying it is worth the bang for their buck.  First of all, they do not need to have any cash outlay like a traditional marketing campaign.  Second, although they may have almost lost their shirts on the deal they have offered, most customers spend more than the original coupon and keep coming back.

 Motivational Interviewing Training

Community Futures East Interlake is offering a unique training opportunity that is ideal for business counselors or anyone who regularly provides counseling to clients.  This standardized training addresses:

  •  Are you working with people that resist or are unable to make effective changes in their lives?
  • Are the techniques and resources you've been using to help resistant or ambivalent people not working?
  • Do people you serve have an inability to make choices or stick with the choices they make?
  • Are you interested in acquiring an internationally recognized motivational process that has proven highly effective with resistant to change and/or ambivalent to change people?

Motivational Interviewing can help resistant or ambivalent clients become more engaged in taking responsibility for their actions and get unstuck.

The training takes place on Feb 8 & 9, 2011 (9-4:30) at the Lakeview Resort on Gimli. The cost, including accommodations is $265. The session is being sponsored in part, by the Entrepreneurs with Disabilities Program, although the training itself is not limited to those working with EDP clients. More information is available by contacting Eugene at ezalevich@eastinterlake.com
