Water Department Update
The repair work to the Depot Hill water storage tank is complete. The next step will be to fill the tank with 300,000 gallons of water, which I am in the in the process of doing. This will take approximately one week as we have to take it out of the system, check the tank for leaks and then chlorinate and take the required bacteria test. Once this is complete and it passes all tests and inspections then we can begin back-filling the tank and put the tank back in service.
The installation of the 2000 feet of water main on Western Ave between The Oaks and Liberty Hill Road is complete. The new water main has passed the required pressure test as well as a bacteria test. We will begin to hook the customers up to the new main, loam and seed the areas that were disturbed and take the old main out of service. We will also be raising the gate boxes in the roadway to grade in preparation for the highway department to pave the road. During this process we don't anticipate closing the road. It should be open to one lane traffic during the day and fully open at night.
Respectfully,
Norman R. Bumford, Superintendent, Cogswell Spring Water Works

Town Administrator Farewell
FROM: Charles E. Connell, Town Administrator SUBJECT: Resignation Statement On September 18, 2012, I submitted my resignation as Town Administrator to the Henniker Board of Selectmen. I did so with sincere regret. To dispel any rumors that might arise, I would like to make three points regarding my resignation.
First, I have the highest regard for the Henniker Board of Selectmen and the individuals who comprise that Board. My experience in working with them has been and is positive. I receive respect as a professional municipal manager and regard as an individual. Second, I have tremendous respect for the staff that serves the Town and its people. They are highly motivated, respectful of and responsive to the public and are professionals in every way. Finally, Henniker is truly special and unique in many ways. Volunteerism is a way of life in this community. It manifests itself in town and community affairs to a far greater extent than in many other communities. Perhaps more profound though is the concern so many individuals show through their efforts to help and support each other. My reasons for leaving Henniker are both personal and important. At this point in my life I am compelled to change my focus and pursue different objectives. I take with me tremendous pride and satisfaction for my experiences in Henniker. I reiterate my belief that mine was "the best job in town". Respectfully submitted, Charles E. Connell, ICMA-CM |

Henniker Lions Club Community Garden Project
Communities like Henniker, and for that matter throughout New Hampshire, are richer because of their community service organizations. The Henniker Lions Club, one of several community service organizations active within our community, embarked on a number of projects this year. The focus of Lions Clubs worldwide is to provide assistance to individuals with sight and hearing disabilities who require financial assistance for simple things like eyeglasses to more complex needs such as cataract surgery. In addition to sight and hearing support, Henniker Lions Club projects that ran during the spring and summer of 2012 included our first annual "Kite Day", a family activity for parents and their children, a 5K foot race called the "Lions Club Eye Run", which supports our sight and hearing activities, and also establishment of a "Community Garden", which is the focus of this article.
The intended goal of the Community Garden was to produce seasonal vegetables for the Henniker Food Pantry. Like any community project, the success of a new project is never assured at the onset and the Community Garden Project was no different. Finding and securing the use of a suitable parcel of land required 18 months of close cooperation and follow-up with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which required completion of a detailed application and review of the intended use of the property by a number of internal Army Corp departments. Once land was acquired, plowing, rock removal, harrowing, and tilling ensued in preparation for planting. Weed control throughout the growing season, watering during dry periods and control of insects ready to devour anything green were the next challenges.
Through the efforts of the Lions Club membership and even volunteers who were not members of the club, the production of the Lions Club Community Garden exceeded our wildest expectations. Beginning in July, we realized the first harvest. First, the ubiquitous zucchini made its appearance along with summer squash. Green beans were the next arrival and the plants went on to produce endlessly throughout August. Next in line were basketfuls of cucumbers and shortly thereafter, the six or seven varieties of tomatoes showed just how prolific tomatoes can be. Butternut squash will complete this year's list of successes.
On at least six occasions, the Henniker Lions club provided 50 pounds or more of vegetables to the Henniker Food Pantry. Equivalent surpluses beyond the needs of the Henniker Food Pantry have been supplied to the Hopkinton Food Pantry in conjunction with the Hopkinton Lions Club. By any measure, this has been one of our most successful, out of the gate, projects for our club. Wait until next year. There are plans to expand not only the size of the garden, but also the number of varieties of vegetables to be grown. This project is an example of community service at its best.
The Henniker Lions Club Community Garden is located on Old Concord Road, approximately one-quarter mile beyond the Town Soccer Fields on the left hand side of the road. For information regarding all of the Henniker Lions Club activities please visit our website at: www.henniker.nhlions.org.
