Town of Henniker Sells Town-owned Land
On Saturday, June 9th, two pieces of Town-owned property returned to private ownership. The sale of these properties represents fulfillment of a commitment made by the Board of Selectmen to Henniker's taxpayers. The Town received $70,000 from the sale; $142,200 returned to the tax rolls.
The location of the first parcel sold is approximately 1.6 acres at the end of Stonehenge Drive. In a Rural Residential Zone, single family homes and Pat's Peak Ski Area surround the parcel. The second parcel is located on Pasture Lane. This 26.5 acre parcel is in a Commercial Recreational Zone. A few single family homes are nearby but the majority of the surrounding lot sold is heavily forested and undeveloped.
The public auction that saw these two parcels sold cost the Town anything but minor legal expenses. The buyers paid a 10% Buyer's Premium to the Auctioneer. Each paid a non-refundable deposit to the Town with closing to occur within 45 days of the sale.
There are two parcels remaining to sell. The first (on Western Avenue) was part of the Public Auction process but received no bids. The second (on Flanders Road) is not yet ready for sale. Both will continue to be priorities for sale at the earliest opportunity.

Dealing with Black Bears
SOURCE: State of NH, Fish & Game Dept. http://www.wildlife.state.nh.us/index.html

What you should do if you encounter a black bear?
- Normal trail noise should alert bears to your presence and prompt them to move without being noticed. However, if you see a bear, keep your distance. Make it aware of your presence by clapping, talking or making other sounds.
- If a bear does not immediately leave after seeing you, the presence or aroma of food may be encouraging it to stay. Remove any sight or smell of foods. Place food items inside a vehicle or building. Occupy a vehicle or building until the bear wanders away.
- Black bears will sometimes "bluff charge" when cornered, threatened or attempting to steal food. Stand your ground and slowly back away.
MORE
Residential Prevention
- Take down, clean and put away bird feeders by April 1. Store the bird feeder until late fall. (Birds will do just fine with the natural foods available.) Bear damage to bird feeders is a common and growing spring complaint.
- Clean up spilled seed below feeder stations.
- Keep garbage in airtight containers inside your garage or storage area. Double bagging and the use of ammonia will reduce odors that attract bears.
- Garbage for pickup should be put outside the morning of collection and not the night before.
- Do not place meat or sweet food scraps in your compost pile.
- Do not leave pet food or dishes outdoors at night.
- Clean up and/or store outdoor grills after use.
- Use a bear-proof dumpster.
- Never intentionally feed bears to attract them to your yard for viewing. Since 2006, it is also illegal to intentionally feed bears.

 Cogswell Springs Water Works
Town of Henniker Water Department Water Alert Summer is here and so is the nice warm weather that comes along with it. We would like to remind everyone of the regulations of water use that are put into place in order to preserve safe drinking water for everyone in town. For anyone on the town's public water system, the Water Department regulations state that outside water usage is only permitted in the early morning and late evening. This is especially important this summer since the system is still operating solely off the Davison Road tank as the Depot Hill tank is off line waiting for repairs due to an easement/right away dispute with a landowner. This reduces our storage capacity by 300,000 gallons. We appreciate all the support and understanding and hope that everyone enjoys their summer. Thank You Your Water Department |

AARP Driving Skill Class
for Ages 50 and Up. Pre-register by Thursday, July 5th.
Date: July 10 and 12th
Time: 9am-1pm
Location: Henniker Community Center
Fee: $12.00 with AARP membership (must present card), $14.00 non-AARP members
Driving is a skill that can and should be continually improved. A driver improvement course online or in classroom can help you keep driving knowledge fresh and get the most out of your vehicle, while reducing risk to you, your passengers and others on the road. Although www.SeniorDriving.AAA.com contains many driving tips, taking a comprehensive driving improvement program will ensure that you have the most up-to-date driving techniques and understand the latest vehicle technologies.
As you age, it is important to know and understand how to adjust for slower reflexes, weaker vision and other changes. Some of the benefits related to taking a safe driving course are:
- Potential discount on insurance premiums.
- Getting up to speed on the latest in vehicle technology, such as anti-lock brakes (ABS) and lane-departure warning systems, and how they affect your driving.
This course is open to those age 50 years and older. You are required to attend both days.
