10 Tips for Preparing for a Power OutageTipsPowerOutage

Retrieved from PSNH's December 2011 E-news

When the weather forecasts are predicting severe conditions, such as high winds or heavy snow, that could lead to power outages, you can be fully prepared in the event the lights go out in your neighborhood:

  1. Check medications that require refrigeration. You may want to keep a small cooler handy.
  2. Put refrigerator and freezer at coldest settings a half-day or so before the expected storm. Get extra ice, which helps maintain cold temperatures in your freezer and refrigerator.
  3. Set aside water-about a gallon a day per person.
  4. Stock up on easy-to-prepare foods. Be prepared to cook outside on your grill (never bring the grill indoors!)
  5. Stock up on wood for your fireplace or woodstove. And if considering a portable generator, make sure you have it professionally installed.
  6. Flashlights-one for each person in the household.
  7. Don't forget batteries and a manual can opener!
  8. As severe weather approaches, unplug sensitive equipment, such as computers and electronic entertainment devices. Voltage irregularities can occur for any number of reasons during or after a storm.
  9. Fill your car's gas tank. Be ready if you need to travel a distance, or to use your car as a place to get warm (make sure it's well-ventilated and that you don't sleep while the motor is running).
  10. Stay clear of downed power lines, and don't touch anything that might be in contact with it. If a downed line is in or near water, keep your distance-even if it's just a small puddle.
