Dougherty Scholar Spotlight
on
Greg Mason | |
"My name is Greg Mason and I am a recipient of a Dougherty Foundation scholarship. In 2002, my mother was diagnosed with uterine cancer. Unfortunately by the time the doctors found it, the cancer had already spread. She struggled over the course of that year. As for me, I was in my second year of school at Paradise Valley Community College and I was struggling to keep my life together. I was working a graveyard shift job and I was worrying about my mother. I was making my grades, but work and family life were putting stress on me. I thought I would breakdown and just lose it. My struggles were starting to show and my teachers helped me get financial aid. Because I was able to qualify for financial aid I was also eligible for scholarships. The Dougherty Foundation came to my rescue when most would not. The foundation gave me the chance and ability to reduce my work schedule, and take care of my mother.
One week before I walked down the graduation aisle, my mother passed away. She never got to see me walk, but she knew it was happening. The Dougherty Foundation is largely accredited for assisting me through the hardship I went through, and helping me get to where I am today. I graduated from PVCC and received my Associates in Arts specializing in Communications. I continued on to pursue my Bachelor of Science with a minor in Management. I am currently working as an account manager for Go Daddy. This year has been the year where I looked back and gave thanks for all that there is to be grateful for. At the top of my list are my family, friends and everyone that helped me through tough times. I recognized the Dougherty Foundation nearly eight years later. Although it should have been sooner, it is a testament that I never forgot what they did for me and never will." |

Frequently Asked Questions
| |
Q: Fall semester is almost finished, do I have to reapply for the spring semester?
A: No, awards are made for the academic year. The Financial Aid office at your school will verify your enrollment, completed fall hours and GPA and request funding for the spring semester if you continue to meet Dougherty requirements.
Q: I'm graduating from community college and transferring to one of the universities here in AZ. Will I be eligible for more scholarship money?
A: Yes, but you must complete a new application at your new school. At the under-graduate level, awards are half mandatory loan and half scholarship. Unlike community college, awards are only made to full time under graduate students. At the graduate level, awards are LOAN only, also only for full time students. The maximum loan limit per student is $8,000.
Q: I've moved, whom do I tell?
A: If you're still in school, notify the Dougherty Foundation via email or telephone (602) 264-7478. If you've left school and are repaying your loan contact FAME at (800) 327-5772 x 310.
