President's Message

I make a practice of adding an extra day before or after a conference for two reasons. First, it is so easy to come home and jump right back into "doing" and forget all the good points I noted to implement from the conference. Second, I take the extra day to catch up on my reading. If you see someone walking through the airport under duress because the carry-on bag is too heavy, it is probably me. My latest journey afforded me the luxury of reading through many publications. One in particular rose to the top.

The May/June 2011 Solutions magazine published by the FPA contained a multitude of great practice management ideas. I submit that the receipt of this magazine is worth the price of admission to the FPA. There have been several occasions when a member from my study group will bring along a copy so we can discuss a particular article of relevance to our businesses. Oftentimes, there is a wee little snip-it of an idea tucked within the pages that results in cost or time savings in my business. Sometimes, I am prodded to explore an idea that barely crossed the radar previously. More often, there are articles confirming we are on track with a recent process change within our office, i.e. document imaging. Whether you have been in business for decades or just beginning, there is something of value in the Solutions publication.

If you've misplaced your copy of the magazine, you can go to www.FPAnet.org/PracticeManagement for more great articles, tips and tools.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

 FPA Goes to CHINA!

A delegation of 42 FPA members from all over the US traveled to China in May to share and learn from our Chinese FPA counterparts. The Chinese planners were accommodating hosts and changed their FPA National conference to coincide with our delegations' visit. We joined the planners in table discussions about the current state of financial planning in China, visited the Shanghai Stock Exchange and attended joint meetings with the planners and executives from China Construction Bank and the Agriculture Bank of China. At the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing we had discussions with the economics and finance professors. FPA National organized this opportunity in conjunction with the People to People Organization. I had previously traveled with a similar delegation to Russia in 2008. These trips have provided me with an invaluable insight into these countries. Please consider joining a future delegation as FPA continues to grow and has expanded to over 20 countries throughout the world.

Some people travel to see the sites; I travel to meet the people.  As a participant in the 2011 Sino-US Dialogue on Financial Planning, I met the people, learned about the economy, the culture, and the business of investing.  What can't the Chinese get enough of:  Real Estate; what's their fastest transit:  the Maglev (461km/h); what was my most heartwarming experience:  Financial Planner, Johnny, meeting me at the airport with Chinese snacks.  Continued...
