President's Message

The attendees at the breakfast meeting on February 24th had nothing but raving reviews about the topic and the speaker. This was a terrific way to start the year off with a bang, not to mention a great way to begin accumulating those continuing education credits. The Estate Planning Conference on March 24th at the Four Points Sheraton in Cranberry will be just as meaningful to your business. We are especially eager to get everyone's participation (with a glass of wine in hand) for our case study. These events present an incredible way to make new friendships and connect with old ones as well.

I pulled my dusty golf clubs out of the garage and drove to the Robert Morris Recreation Center on Neville Island to hit a few balls recently. Not only were my clubs dusty, but my swing was as well. However, I'm not going to let that intimidate me into sitting out the golf outing on April 29, 2011 at Old Stonewall. Our golf outing is the best around, hands down!!! This is a great day to entertain clients and visit with colleagues. We promise to have lots of great prizes and food too. An invitation will be arriving shortly in your mailbox, so sign up early as space is limited.

Oftentimes, we feel insulated and comfortable in our local chapter. It is not uncommon for me to hear from our members statements to the effect, "I don't know what National FPA actually does or means for me." After attending the National Leadership Conference for two years running, I can attest there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes at headquarters on your behalf. But, telling you and experiencing it firsthand are two different things. The good news is we will be bringing "National" to Pittsburgh. The details are not finalized, but plans are underway to create an exclusive opportunity for you to share your thoughts, suggestions, and complaints with the "top brass" in the national leadership. Additionally, they will share what they are seeing from a "big picture" for our industry and the Financial Planning Association for the future. There will be several communications disseminated about this event in coming weeks.

I will be "beating my drum" regarding the Four'Um on October 20, 2011 all year long. This is going to be another knockout event you will not want to miss. Keynote speakers are already being engaged and sponsors are contacting us to get on the roster for this year. If you have a topic of interest, please submit it to me, or any board member, and we'll surely do our best to find a speaker to fill your request. Mark your calendars today to attend the Four'Um on October 20, 2011 at the Southpointe Hilton Garden Inn.

Sincerely,

Darla

"IN THE NEWS" - Fiduciary Rule Impact on IRA Business

Fiduciary rule change could mean compliance crush for B-Ds...

If the Labor Department applies its proposed fiduciary rule to individual retirement accounts, training and compliance costs could surge for broker-dealers of all sizes - and become especially burdensome to smaller firms.

Under the proposed rule, broker-dealer firms and their representatives wouldn't be allowed to receive commissions on IRAs. This rule change could force dually registered firms to shift their IRA business from the brokerage side of the business to the registered investment advisory side in order to allow firms to charge an asset-based fee on accounts.

This higher-cost model would likely impact the sustainability of companies who service the small investor by squeezing profit margins and straining compliance budgets. It could also impact the small investor by making the process of opening an IRA cost prohibitive.

Junior Achievement Volunteer Opps

Opportunities are available to get involved in the financial education of local children by volunteering with Junior Achievement.  Contact Mark Ambrose for more information.

Please see the following JA Flyer for more details!

"I had a fabulous experience volunteering with JA in an elementary school interacting with forth grade students last year for JA Day.  JA trained us on how to run the program and provided all of the materials and props that we needed.  For most of the afternoon, we played a game with the students that involved them running their own car eraser manufacturing plant.  We learned how to make rubber erasers and they learned how to best allocate their resources to try and earn a profit.

The kids really liked the interactive nature of the "game" and learned something about business and responsibility in the process.  The teachers stay in the classroom to watch over the group and really help to facilitate.  I think the program is well structured and JA has a program developed to match the grade level you teach.  I would highly recommend that all of our members consider volunteering their time to bring some outside perspectives into our schools. I know that the children really enjoy it."
