President's Message

Happy Holidays!  I can hardly believe this is my final message as your FPA of Pittsburgh Chapter President; the year went by so quickly.  It's been a terrific experience serving as president of this chapter.  Each year we continue to build and shape the FPA of Pittsburgh Chapter.  I trust I leave this chapter stronger and with a sense of excitement about the enhancements yet to come.

Our business is changing quickly and there is no better way to keep abreast of the changes than getting involved with the FPA by joining a committee or just making a commitment to attend a conference or two next year.  You will be amazed at how many smart, friendly people you will meet through the FPA.  The most rewarding part of my experience serving on the FPA of Pittsburgh board has been the many friendships I've formed.  In my experience, friendships forged in working together and enjoying the satisfaction of a job well done are truly one of life's great pleasures.

So thank you for the opportunity to serve as President this year; it's been a thrilling experience and I hope you will consider becoming more engaged in your FPA chapter in 2011.

Best wishes for a wonderful Holiday Season and a very prosperous New Year!

Heart of Financial Planning Award

Recipient Honored

The FPA of Pittsburgh announced Kim Tillotson Fleming as its first Heart of Financial Planning Award honoree at the Financial Four'um on October 21.  This distinguished service award is bestowed annually to an individual or organization that engages in extraordinary work, contributing and giving back to the financial planning community and public through their work.  Kim was an easy choice for this year's award, as exhibited by her service and various accomplishments.  Her involvement includes serving as a member of the FPA, CFA institute, Pittsburgh Society of Financial Analysts, and the Association for Investment Management and Research; and on the Boards of Wharton's Securities Industry Institute, the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, Civic Light Opera, Duquesne Club, UPMC Health Plan, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and Allegheny College.  She has received numerous awards and most recenlty was named to the 2009 Pittsburgh Business Times Top 25 Women in Business.  These contributions are just a few examples of Kim's passion in life to help others, including her clients, employees, family, friends, and fellow church and board members.

Upon receiving the award, Kim shared the following words of appreciation:

I want to send my deep gratitude and thanks for the great honor of receiving the Heart of Financial Planning Award this year.  I was very sorry not to be there to personally express my thanks.  The passing of my father, Bill Tillotson (my mentor and a true visionary in the field of financial planning) just before the event brought a tremendous outpouring of support from so many in the financial planning community for which we are also very thankful. It is a privilege to work in a career that has so much meaning, offering the potential to change and impact the lives of others. In recognition of so many who have mentored and continue to serve as mentors, I offer my deepest thanks.

Gratefully,
Kim Tillotson Fleming

FPA of Pittsburgh Brings Home Award!

Your FPA of Pittsburgh Chapter was awarded the 2010 Outstanding Achievement Award for Partnering with Like-Minded Organizations at the FPA National Leadership Conference held in Denver in November.  The success of our Financial Four'um sparked the interest and attention of FPA chapters across the country. Ruth Forsyth and Darla Main accepted the award on behalf of the FPA of Pittsburgh and led a discussion in a roundtable session about our Chapter's efforts and processes. The support of our membership was a large contributing factor to our success, so hats off to all who attended and contributed to our Chapter's earning this honor.

Opportunities will be available this winter to get involved in the financial education of local children by volunteering with Junior Achievement.  Contact Mark Ambrose for more information.

In the 4 years of participating in JA programs I have learned one very big lesson -  I gain as much from the experience as the children.  The interaction with bright, hopeful, energetic students is something I look forward to each time, and it helps me be a better professional.  - David Jeter
