World Affairs Council of Las Vegas - February Newsletter
World Affairs Council of Las VegasFebruary 2011
 Greetings!

Last month's Jan 13th presentation onTunisia by expert Jerry Sorkin set the stage for the unfolding news of unrest within Tunisia, and from this Las Vegas vantage point, we were afforded the best seats in the house to understand Tunisia's and Egypt's transformations.

We intend to continue to provide pertinent programs with valuable insights into volatile areas and issues that shape our world.  This Wednesday, Professor Chung-In Moon arrives directly from South Korea to discuss the North Korean nuclear issue at an evening World Affairs Council of Las Vegas event. Next month, on Monday, March 21st Roxanna Saberi will share her experiences as a reporter imprisoned in Iran (look for a special newsletter next week with more details).

If you are looking for a hands on opportunity to enhance your global involvement, we have two unique programs that offer volunteers a major role:You can participate in our application for the State Department's International Visitors Program or participate in the U.S. Center for Global Engagement. More details below.

We look forward to your participation in shaping our world and to an exciting year!

The U.S. Global Leadership Coalition (USGLC) is a network of 400 influential businesses and NGOs; national security and foreign policy experts; and community leaders in all 50 states who want to elevate diplomacy alongside defense to build a safer world.

Teachers & Organizations - Help Promote Las Vegas.

The State Department will review WACLV's International Leadership Program application in July 2011.  This program brings 4,000 emerging international leaders to the United States each year - and potentially several hundred to Las Vegas. We are currently the largest non-participating metropolitan area. We welcome the community's participation in the process:

Teachers  You can help in two ways -
  • Ask your students to write a "Dear Future International Leader of country xxx" letter.  Include valuable lessons the leader can learn about Las Vegas and what  students would like to know about their country.  If the student is bi-lingual - write the letter in both languages.
  • Ask your class to take one of the categories (there are several dozen) and write a profile on what Las Vegas has to offer a visiting leader - or edit one of the categories we have prepared.

We will send participants a certificate of appreciation and these letters and profiles will be used in presenting our application.

Community Leaders

We would like to offer you the opportunity to review and edit our application and make suggestions for expanding our profile and will send you our draft application and profile.

To learn more about this program please visit www.nciv.org

If you are interested in this volunteer opportunity please e-mail us at waclasvegas@gmail.com and we will send you the necessary materials and instructions.
