November Newsletter and Upcoming Events - World Affairs Council of Las Vegas
World Affairs Council of Las VegasNovember 2010
Arch at the Great Wall of ChinaGreetings!

It's a busy month!

The World Affairs Councils of America National Conference took place in DC Nov 4-6th and featured Foreign Policy Experts from the highest levels of our government, media, academia and private think tanks. We heard from the Deputy Secretary of State, top Defense officials, US Ambassadors, foreign correspondents, etc. They discussed the changing face of International relationships and fielded questions from the 250 attendees from councils across the US. Their challenge to us was to engage our communities to debate the top 6 issues facing the nation today.

This week is International Education week and both CSN and UNLV are offering a series of free community programs to celebrate. See below.

We kicked off two flagship WACLV programs for teachers this month:

       1. The Academic WorldQuest contest for high schools will take place in March. Six schools will compete to go to DC.

For more information contact Traci Wickham t.r.wickham@gmail.com

        2. The  Portrait of Turkey Program---a professional development program for teachers funded through the support of   the Turkish Cultural Foundation. Contact Mercedes Krause emkrause@interact.ccsd.net for more information.

We are seeking individuals interested in being a part of the State Department Program for Eco Partnerships with China. Contact Matt Mcneelege mmcneelege@cox.net for more information.

Thanks again to everyone that helped make the October luncheon for the Ambassador of Uzbekistanin a great success.

As always we appreciate your support - and we hope to hear from you with your ideas and suggestions for engaging the Las Vegas community in world affairs.

Best Wishes,

Annette Whiteside

 Eco Partnership Program With China
We are interested in anyone in government, higher education and private industry interested in the development of an Eco partnership with a city in China.  The eco partnership can include anyone with interests in water, energy, alternative energy products, conservation, waste recycling, public transportation or basically anyone with a profit or non-profit motive for green initiatives.

We will be developing a proposal for the State Department over the next several months based on community strengths and needs.  The expected commitment at this time is to provide time to develop an understanding of the program and to spend time exploring how your thoughts and interests can be used to develop a mutually beneficial program with China.

If you are interested please click below and review the State Department website.
