Haiti update
|
The system in the picture above was provided by International Childcare Ministries and taken at Parc Cretian School in Haiti. 5 filters attached to a trash can size container will yield thousands of gallons of water per day.
A
few quotes from our partner NGO's
Thank you for your help and support for the people of Haiti.
Between CLF and our partners, MWOB, Engaged Life Church, and Keith Cook's "ON
The GO" ministry we have shipped 375 filters that will each provide up to 300
gallons each day of clean drinking water. This can support the drinking water
needs of up to 225,000 people for 1 year and beyond.

We've
been using the Sawyer Point One filter with our Haiti Water Relief teams. Of
the 31 people who've worked in the earthquake relief and used the Point One
filter....none have gotten sick.

OUTREACH
Thank you all so much for your help with the water filters.
Many that we gave away were to those taking care of nursing infants whose
mothers were killed in the quake. We provided formula, bottles and feeding
techniques along with the filters to make sure the formula had clean water!

Your filters went to bless the tent city in Carrefour. The
man in the pictures I sent never heard or thought that the water needed to be
made safe to drink. The ten filters will help hundreds
of people there. Thank you for this life saving product.

I was so burdened for many years in my mission work
when I saw the horrible water sources people were using overseas. I tried
drilling bore holes (wells), but they were so expensive (nearly $10,000 each),
and we were not guaranteed that the water would even be safe water once we made
this investment. I also tried using chemicals to make the drinking water
safer, but that was impractical, for they would need a regular supply they could
not afford. In July 2007, after such a visit to Kenya, I came home
determined to find a better solution. After researching I
discovered the biosand filter and immediately began to implement biosand filter
projects.
I recently discovered the Sawyer filter, too, so I am
now using both technologies to provide safe drinking water to poor folks in
Kenya, Rwanda, India, Peru, Pakistan, and D.R. Congo---Over 300 Sawyer filters, in 12
different projects in 18 months! Additionally, we have sent hundreds of filters to Haiti to provide clean water to the earthquake victims.
The simplicity (no work involved) and effectiveness as
compared to the biosand filter makes the Sawyer filter more
attractive to use for our safe water projects.
Everywhere we have used the
Sawyer filter, we are getting very good results concerning the improved health
of the people using them. The simplicity, safe water results, easy
operation, and low maintenance of the Sawyer filter are tremendous benefits of
this technology.

The Greenest Water on Earth
|
Sawyer Water Filters are perhaps the most significant impact product
to ever come along for positive change. Whether you are a proponent of man enhanced
Global Warming, Earth Stewardship as a human responsibility, or concerned about
the ecological impact of deforestation, it doesn't matter because we can all agree
that Sawyer filters are having a positive effect on the environment. Consider these items: For
a family of four to boil enough water for daily use the need to use the energy
contained in 10 to 40 trees annually, or 39 gallons of oil, or 211 pounds of
natural gas. The Sawyer filter completely eliminates the need to clean
water by boiling.
THE BENEFIT:
1) By not having to cut
down 10 to 40 trees (or equivalent brush) we can reduce deforestation and the
resulting floods and mudslides.
2) By not burning so
much wood and brush (or gas and/or oil) we reduce air pollution by huge levels.
3) By not burning so
much wood and brush we leave those trees to replenish the air (trees convert
carbon dioxide into oxygen which is a good thing)
4) For the average
family of four which will only trust bottled water for drinking they can use up
to 6,000 plastic bottles a year. In reality the number is probably less,
but still and enormous amount of plastic, non-degradable, bottles being
needlessly introduced into the environment, including all the needless energy
being used to create the clean water. Just ask any municipalities in
developing countries with poor water quality how many bottles they have to
collect and dispose of. The Sawyer filter flows so fast as a Point of Use
filter that we can eliminate the use of disposable plastic bottles.

How much water can I filter per day??
|
Wondering how much water the PointONE Filter
™ and PointZERO Two Purifier
™ are capable of filtering per day, or per hour?
The flow rates of the filters and purifiers are determined by a combination of four variables:
· Head pressure (the distance from the top of the water to the filter)
· Altitude (the higher the altitude, the slower the flow rate)
· How clean the filter is
· The filter itself (there are slight variations between filters)
For example: the PointONE Filter with a 1 foot hose (Model SP180) attached to a
standard five gallon bucket at sea level is capable of filtering up to
295 gallons (1117 liters) of water per day. The PointZERO TWO Purifier
with a 3 foot hose (Model SP190) attached to a standard 5 gallon bucket
at sea level is capable of purifying up to 87 gallons (327 liters) of
water per day. If you increase the head pressure by either lengthening
the hose, attaching the filter to a larger container like a 55 gallon
drum, or constantly keep the bucket full so the top of the water is as
high as possible, this will increase the flow rate.

the flow rate of your PointONE Filter based on the altitude where you will be
filtering water and the inches (or centimeters) of head pressure, click here.

pressure, click here.
This video was provided by Chuck Smith with Heaven's Family. Watch
the video to get a visual of the flow rate with 1 foot of hose at sea
level, with dirty water. Note: For demonstration purposes Chuck stirred up the water before filtering it. We do not recommend doing this. You would want to pre-filter the the water or allow it to settle first. Bleach is not required for the filter to
remove bacteria, protozoan or cysts. Also, some freshwater may be discolored after filtration because of tannins in the water (i.e. tea leaves stain water). If there is coloration after filtration that does not mean the water is unsafe to drink. All the bacteria, protozoan and cysts will still be removed.
