1,500 more people in Haiti with clean water
, Haitian women

Luke's Mission (LM) based in Durham, NC recently returned from their second trip to Belbede, Haiti where they followed up with 60 women that received Sawyer filters last April. While there they were also able to distribute an additional 36 filters.

On the first trip, LM provided training on how to install and use the filtration system to the group of 60 women. The women brought their own buckets to transport the unfiltered water and they were given a PointONE Filter as well as a clean bucket for the filtered water. Almost one year later, over 1,500 people in Haiti now have access to clean water.

According to April Perry, executive director of LM, the pastor in the village described the general health of the community as much improved, and the effect of the filters on the health of the community as HUGE. In general, he said the mothers rarely report diarrhea in their children now where as prior to receiving the filters, they had it several times a week.

Story from the trip...
One Haitian woman was standing off to the side of the class for several minutes and watched as women came up to learn how to assemble the system and backwash the filter. She finally got the courage to ask if she is could have a drink. The woman told LM's interpreter she had been watching the Americans drink the water from the filter and therefore she felt it was safe to drink. As she walked away with her cup of clean water, she exclaimed in joy that she could hardly believe she was drinking water that came from the dirty river.

Before and After
 Before and after picture

Sawyer's filters and purifiers have passed the most rigorous EPA tests for water filters and purifiers. In fact, they maxed out the EPA test at 7 log removal rate of bacteria (99.99999%), something never done before. Regardless, many of the organizations we are working with like to do testing of their own. Although we enjoy hearing the results of those studies, we are not at all surprised by the outcomes.

Sometimes seeing is believing, so take a look at the before and after pictures provided by
Wade Robinson with SIFAT.

The first picture shows a sample of water taken from a creek in West Virginia. The water from the creek was run through a grid filter paper that catches bacteria, protozoa, and other nasty stuff.  Once the sample was run through the grid filter paper it was placed on an agar and incubated over night to allow for growth of any organisms that may be present in the water. As you can see, there was significant growth.

The creek water was also run through the Sawyer PointONE Filter. Once this water was filtered it was then run through the grid filter paper and placed on an agar and incubated over night.

There was no growth on the plate that had filtered water run through it.

Water for mission team
While traveling, why pay for bottled water and transport it around when you can drink the existing water and have it be cleaner than the bottled water would have been?

Hearts Afire, Inc. medical mission team went to Gulu, Uganda July 24 - August 5, 2009. They purchased two purifier units and these were used exclusively to supply the team of 33 individuals with clean water daily. Normally on these trips bottled water would be purchased and transported each day to the various free medical clinics the group holds. "Purchasing the Sawyer purification system saved time, money and was very convenient. We won't leave home without them!"

Note: Take notice of how Hearts Afire installed two purifiers onto one bucket to double the output.
