Breast cancer seems to touch everyone's lives in one way or another.  With two neighbors that have fought it and/or is fighting it today, I thought it appropriate to dedicate the October newsletters to a greater awareness of the disease. Especially read the interesting FAQs about breast cancer.  Look at past issues in the archive too.

With cooler months here now, use the recipes for a natural room spray and to combat that aweful, hacking cough.  I've also included some information on our favorite Kid's Line essential oil blend.  Feel free to forward these newsletters to your family and friends.  In being more aware of natural health products, we can help each other stay healthier and live fuller lives.

FAQs

Listed below are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about breast cancer.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can physical activity reduce the risk of breast cancer?

Exercise pumps up the immune system and lowers estrogen levels. With as little as four hours of exercise per week, a woman can begin to lower her risk of breast cancer.

Can a healthy diet help prevent breast cancer?

A nutritious, low-fat diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables can help reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. A high-fat diet increases the risk because fat triggers estrogen production that can fuel tumor growth.

Does smoking cause breast cancer?

At this point in time there is no conclusive link between smoking and breast cancer. However, due to the number of health risks associated with smoking, quitting can significantly increase survival rates.

Can drinking alcohol increase the risk of breast cancer?

One or two drinks a day has been shown to slightly increase the risk of breast cancer. The greater the levels consumed, the higher the risk.

Is there a link between oral contraceptives and breast cancer?

There is an increased risk of breast cancer for women under 35 who have been using birth control pills for more than ten years.

How often should I do a breast self-exam (BSE)?

Give yourself a breast self-exam at least once a month. Look for any changes in breast tissue, such as changes in size, a lump, dimpling or puckering of the breast, or a discharge from the nipple. If you discover a persistent lump in your breast or any changes in breast tissue, it is very important that you see a physician immediately. However, 8 out of 10 lumps are benign, or not cancerous.

Does a family history of breast cancer put someone at a higher risk?

If you have a grandmother, mother, sister, or daughter who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, this does put you in a higher risk group. Have a baseline mammogram at least five years before the age of breast cancer onset in any close relatives, or starting at age 35. See your physician at any sign of unusual symptoms.

Are Mammograms Painful?

Mammography does compress the breasts and can sometimes cause slight discomfort for a very brief period of time. Patients who are sensitive should schedule their mammograms a week after their menstrual cycle so that the breasts are less tender.

How does menstrual and reproductive history affect breast cancer risks?

Women who began their menstrual cycles before age 12, have no children, or had their first child at 30 or older, or began menopause after 55 are at a higher risk.

How Often Should I Go To My Doctor For A Checkup?

You should have a physical every year. If any unusual symptoms or changes in your breasts occur before your scheduled visit, do not hesitate to see the doctor immediately.

What Kind Of Impact Does Stress Have On Breast Cancer?

Although some studies have shown that factors such as traumatic events and losses can alter immune system functions, these studies have not provided any evidence of a direct cause-and-effect relationship between stress and breast cancer. An area currently being studied is whether or not stress reduction can improve immune response and slow progression in women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Need a beauty pick-me-up?

During these dry, winter months you need to incorporate DMAE & MSM Serum into your twice a day face cleansing regiment.  The combination of DMAE and MSM give this serum synergetic property that makes this a fabulous product for mature, sensitive, irritated, dry, oily and acneic skin.

DMAE is an amazing nutrient that extends the life of cells, inhibits the cross linking of proteins, which gives the skin a tone and firm appearance. This serum is very light and can be put on over or under the makeup. The firm appearance that DMAE can bring to the skin occurs within about 20 minutes and wears off by the end of the day. DMAE has become very popular as a result of Dr. Nicholas Perricone, M.D.'s top-selling book, The Wrinkle Cure, in which he promotes supplementing with DMAE as a treatment for reducing wrinkles. When applied to the skin DMAE would stimulate acetylcholine release which would trigger a response in the muscles of the face. This activity creates a firmer facial tone and less sagging.

MSM, Methylsulfonylmethane, is a naturally occurring nutrient found in plants, meats, dairy products, fruits, and vegetables. MSM is therefore found in the normal human diet. It is an odorless, tasteless, white water soluble, crystalline solid in its purified form. MSM supplies sulfur to the body which allows it to heal itself. It produces muscle relaxation and reportedly a whole host of beneficial qualities. It has been used with great success in eliminating chronic pain, muscle pain, repairing cut, scraped, burned and damage skin. We've seen reports of MSM eliminating wrinkles, brown spots, skin tumors, and spider veins. MSM is being used for burn victims and repairing scar tissue. Many people report relief from allergies after using MSM. Other reports indicate that MSM will remove parasites from the body, and help the body to detoxify itself.

MSM is anti-inflamatory and anti-microbial. MSM feeds the formation of collagen and elastin while preventing and reducing cross-linking between cells, which is the primary cause of wrinkles and scar tissue. MSM is a natural sulfur compound that contributes to healthy skin, hair and nails. MSM has been used orally and topically to aid skin disorders. When used topically, in the form of a cream or lotion, sulfur is helpful in treating skin disorders including acne, psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, dandruff, scabies, diaper rash and certain fungal infections.

Oil of the Month FrankincenseFrank tree
Also known as "olibanum", or "Oil from Lebanon" the name frankincense is derived from the Medieval French word for "real incense".  Frankincense is considered the"holy anointing oil" in the Middle East and has been used in relilgious ceremonies for thousands of years.  It was well known during the time of Christ for its anointing and healing powers and was one of the gifts given to Christ at His birth.  "Used to treat every conceivable ill known to man," frankincense was valued more than gold during ancient times, and only those with great wealth and abundance possessed it.

Researchers today have discovered that the sequiterpenes in frankincense help stimulate the limbic system of the brain (the center of emotions) as well as he hypothalamus, pineal an pituitary glands.  The hypothalamus is the master gland of the human body, controlling the release of many hormones including thyroid and growth hormone.  Frankincense is now being researched and used therapeutically in European hospitals and is being investigated for its ability to improve homan growth hormone production.

Vetiver is believed to have antiseptic, aphrodisiac and sedative properties, to name a few.  Considered a "grounding oil", it is thought to decrease feelings of irritability, anger and hysteria; it has been referred to as the 'oil of tranquility'.  Physically, it is said to balance hormones, revitalize the body, relieve physical exhaustion and ease arthritis and muscular pain.

Below is a recipe that can be used as a cologne, aftershave, room spray, linen spray, etc.  Because the scent is masculine, it is likely to be preferred by males.  But there are no rules!  So if you're a girl and you like it, there's no reason you can't share it with your boyfriend, husband or daddy!
 1)  In a 2-oz spray bottle, combine 1/2 oz. of grain alcohol (or vodka) with the following essential oils:
-1 drop Vetiver (a little goes a loooooong way!)
-1 drop black pepper
-2 drops sandalwood
-3 drops tangerine
2)  Shake vigorously to emulsify the essential oils
3)  Add 1/2 oz of vegetable glycerin (optional) and top off with lavender water.  Shake well and let sit for 24 hours to blend.

Heavy Cough Blend

  • 3 drops Frankincense
  • 3 drops Lemon
  • 2 drops Ravensara
  • 1 drop Thyme
Mix above essential oils and apply to bottom of feet.  To apply to throat, chest and back of neck, dilute 50:50 with a pure carrier oil like Sweet Almond or Olive oil (2-4 times daily).
