Aromatherapy News
Greetings!

Breast cancer seems to touch everyone's lives in one way or another.  With two neighbors that have fought it and/or is fighting it today, I thought it appropriate to dedicate the October newsletters to a greater awareness of the disease.  I will especially focus on how aromatherapy can and must be an essential part of the fight against cancer.

Read the articles and use the recipes.  And be sure to read the handy tips in the new Kid's Column.  Forward these newsletters to your family and friends.  In being more aware of cancer and other health issues, we can help each other stay healthier and live fuller lives.

Helping you to better health,

For the Love of Football

My son joined the 7th grade football team at the end of August this year.  Their team is doing well, and are nearing the end of the season.

So far, Sam has suffered a bruised arm from the cleets of an opponent walking on him.  He has had, what he called "a crushed ankle", which was sandwiched between two of the linemen at practice; all going three were going for the tackling dummy.  Their was swelling, bruising and limping after that one.  Sam has been to the chiropractor a number of times for his hip and lower back that keeps getting knocked out during nice, hard tackles during games.  And Sam loves the sport.

So what is a mom to do?  Aromatherapy to the rescue!  Grab your 15 ml essential oil bottles and start rubbing him down.  At different times and for all the various injuries, I used Muscle Relax essential oil blend, Balsam fir essential oil, Helichrysum diluted in fractionated coconut oil, Ahhh! The Essential Muscle Rub, and Peppermint.   Throughout it all, Sam never missed a game or practice.  He didn't have any black and blue marks to show for his tough knocks either.  So, now Mom feels better too.

Oh, I almost forget the bags of ice, and the Tea Tree and Lemon essential oils for those stinky shoes!

Inflammation

Muscle Relax PixInflammation can be caused by various conditions:  bacteria, poor diet, chemicals, hormonal imbalance, or physical injury.

Certain essential oils have been documented to be excellent for reducing inflammation.  German Chamomile contains azulene, a blue compound with highly anti-inflammatory properties.  Peppermint is also highly anti-inflammatory.  Other oils also have anti-inflammatory properties such as Helichrysum, Black Spruce, Birch or Wintergreen, and Clove.

There are different types of inflammation for which one oil might be better than another:

Myrrh and Helichrysum:  inflammation due to tissue/capillary damage, bruising.

Roman Chamomile and Lavender:  inflammation due to bacterial infection.

Ravensara, Hyssop and Thyme:  inflammation caused by viral infection.

Mix up the two Anit-inflammation Blend Recipes to the right in this newsletter for some great relief.  Or better yet, click on the following links to the best anti-inflammatory products at The Oil Shoppe:  Muscle Relax, Ahhh! The Essential Muscle Rub, Peppermint D., and Pain Relief Blend.

Breast Cancer Myths

Don't let yourself be a victim of misinformation and the myths generated by fear.

BREAST CANCER MYTHS

The Myth

Finding a lump in your breast means you have breast cancer.

The Truth

If you discover a persistent lump in your breast or any changes in breast tissue, it is very important that you see a physician immediately. However, 8 out of 10 breast lumps are benign, or not cancerous. Sometimes women stay away from medical care because they fear what they might find. Take charge of your health by performing routine breast self-exams, establishing ongoing communication with your doctor, and scheduling regular mammograms.

The Myth

Men do not get breast cancer.

The Truth

Quite the contrary. Each year it is estimated that approximately 1,700 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 450 will die. While this percentage is still small, men should also give themselves regular breast self-exams and note any changes to their physicians.

The Myth

A mammogram can cause breast cancer to spread.

The Truth

A mammogram, or X-ray of the breast, is one of the best tools available for the early detection of breast cancer. It CANNOT cause cancer to spread, nor can the pressure put on the breast from the mammogram. Do not let tales of other people's experiences keep you from having a mammogram. Base your decision on your physician's recommendation and be sure to discuss any questions or concerns with your doctor.

The Myth

Having a family history of breast cancer means you will get it.

The Truth

While women who have a family history of breast cancer are in a higher risk group, most women who have breast cancer have no family history. If you have a mother, daughter, sister, or grandmother who had breast cancer, you should have a mammogram five years before the age of their diagnosis, or starting at age 35.

The Myth

Breast cancer is contagious.

The Truth

You cannot catch breast cancer or transfer it to someone else's body. Breast cancer is the result of uncontrolled cell growth in your own body. However, you can protect yourself by being aware of the risk factors and following an early detection plan.

The Myth

Knowing you have changes in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene can help you prevent breast cancer.

The Truth

While alterations in these genes in men and women can predispose an individual to an increased risk of breast cancer, only 5% to 10% of patients actually have this mutation. This is not an absolute correlation. Like your age or having a family history of breast cancer, it's a factor you just can't control. But you can let your physician know, perform regular breast self-exams, and focus on the fact your chances of not having this disease are greater than 90%.

Kid's Column

Do what's best for your precious kids.  Easy to use, affordable and fast-acting essential oils are natural help you can depend on.   No more pillsor sticky-messy liquids, no more constant reliance on Tylenol, no more waits at the pharmacy; just good old mother nature working on your side.  The Kid's Line of essential oils, specially formulated by The Oil Shoppe (and tested on their 7 children) are all you need to get through your common childhood illnesses and issues.

Kid's oil blends are designed for children under the age of 12.  Generally speaking, any child over 12 can cautiously begin to use oils at adult ratios.  As children have weaker constitutions, one needs to take extra precaution and know some basic safety rules when using essential oils.  Those rules are listed within the pages of our web site.
Search out the ailment(s) of your child, and choose the corresponding Kid's oils to be used for those problems.

Each newsletter we will feature a blend made just for kids.  But for this week, just feel free to browse the entire line and see for yourself what we cover.
