Dear Members, Happy 2012! As we have approached the mid-way point of the Junior League year, the Board of Directors met for our mid-year "retreat" last week. As a board, we are dedicated to meeting the needs of our community and our members. We met to evaluate our League's progress so far, to re-affirm our mission and vision, and to ensure we have the adequate resources to continue our league's forward motion. I encourage each member of our organization to do the same. "What can you do in your placement to move the work of League forward?" "What personal skills are you looking to improve upon?" "What personal or professional connections are you going to make?" These are all questions we should ask ourselves periodically to ensure our individual needs are met. In a month or so, you will have the opportunity to apply for positions on our straw ballot. These positions are considered leadership focused. Take some time before then to think about where you would like your next opportunity to be within Junior League. As we continue to move forward, you can look for some changes to our weekly e-mail and to our internal and external communication in general. As the use of social media increases, the JLB will start to use many forms of social media as communication tools. We are also moving ahead to pursue some additional projects in the community. The LifeCoach program is a solid beginning for the League to begin learning more about our impact issue: Single Women Heads of Households Living in Poverty. Now we will look to expand our horizons and develop additional programs, as we have always envisioned running multiple activities or events that serve to support our community impact issue. Through our General Meetings, we have facilitated the learning and awareness for many of the difficulties these women and families face. We now begin the process of incorporating more opportunities to make an impact in our community. We encourage all our members to suggest ideas and projects for future consideration. I am thrilled to announce that the M&T Bank Charitable Foundation has granted the Junior League of Buffalo $3000 for our community programs over the next year. The grant will be used to support our work with Single Women Heads of Household Living in Poverty. Many thanks to M&T for their generous support and especially to Ann Galbraith, JL Sustainer, who was instrumental in writing and advocating for this grant. JLB's Executive Vice President, Colleen Seminara, headed to Albany last November to attend the NYSPAC Fall Conference. Following the course of AJLI initiatives, the Junior League of Buffalo is hoping to increase our involvement, as a League, in advocacy and encourage our members to become more engaged in civic issues. Look for more opportunities for advocacy in the months ahead. We will be hearing much more from Colleen in the near future, as she is heading up the Transition Team and the Scholarship Committee. Quick Points: * Anyone interested in ODI Training (Texas) in February should contact Sarah Snyder, Membership VP * Webinar Wednesdays will begin again on January 18th through the AJLI web site * Buy your Junior League T-Shirts if you have not already done so at www.bluebisonsports.com Our next meeting will take place on January 17th at Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site (Wilcox Mansion). We will hear updates from each of our councils, as well as from the Casino Night Committee, and from our Provisional Class. The Community Research and Development Committee, under the guidance of Jessica Schimert, has been working very hard to uncover opportunities in the community, which will allow our league to continue impacting Single Women Heads of Households Living Poverty. Jessica will be speaking at the meeting regarding some of this research. The new year is always a good time to reflect on what's important. When I look back on the past few months and all of 2011, I am inspired by all the dedication, creativity, compassion, and energy I've witnessed within this organization. Our members rise to the challenge, give of their time selflessly, and have an incredible desire to do for others. Our League is vibrant and strong, and we can look forward to an exciting, impactful, and rewarding 2012. All the best for 2012, Julie |
The next General Meeting will be Tuesday, January 17, at the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site at 6:30 p.m.

Show House Proceeds Update
Submitted by Kristy Gossel
The 2011 Show House Proceeds Committee is working diligently in order to present to the Junior League Membership in March the very best candidates to be the recipients of up to $219,000 of the proceeds from this year's Decorators' Show House. We received close to 50 preliminary applications and have asked 7 local agencies to complete a final application. After reviewing these, we will conduct interviews and site visits during the month of January with those the committee chooses to move forward. We will then meet as a committee to determine which of the agencies will be asked to present to the Junior League members on March 20. Prior to that date, the committee will ensure that each agency is prepared to deliver the best possible presentation to our membership.
Please save the date of March 20, 2012 for our very critical voting meeting regarding Show House Proceeds! The committee has worked hard thus far to ensure that we choose candidates to benefit from these funds who are well qualified, exciting, and who make significant contributions to our community. The vote is up to you!

 | | The Webb Building: Location for Fantasy Casino Night |
The Webb building, which was erected in 1888 by local entrepreneur Jewett M. Richmond, dates from the second period of Buffalo's architectural history. The phase commenced with the advent of the railroad in 1843 and continued until the 1890s. Commercial buildings erected during this period exhibit the heavier and richer detailing characteristic of nineteenth-century Victorian style.
