Welcome to the 2011-2012 Junior League Year! I hope everyone had a beautiful summer. There are so many exciting things happening in League that are sure to provide meaningful opportunities for our members to develop their potential, improve our community, and promote the spirit of voluntarism. Throughout the past few months, the Board of Directors and the councils and committees have been meeting and making plans for the coming year. Focusing on Single Female Heads of Households Living in Poverty, we will start our partnership with the Northwest Community Center and various other non-profit organizations to present the Life Coach Program. Lynsey Zymdahl, Kate Mori, and Stella Fey have been working around the clock to ensure a successful kick-off of this impactful program. As a league, we will continue to think about "impacting this issue," rather than working on a single project. Throughout the year, we will be presented with ideas on how each member can fulfill her new Two Hour Community Requirement and "touch" our impact issue. Our Provisional Committee stands ready to welcome our newest dynamic members with a program of training, community service, and friendship throughout the coming year. Please introduce yourself to our provisional members if you see them at our meetings and events. Many thanks to Alisa LaPlante and Hillary Banas and their committee for a terrific recruitment campaign. The Show House Proceeds Committee, under the leadership of Kristy Gossel and Cindy Vance, will soon begin their yearlong journey, learning about some of the non-profit work in our community and identifying many worthwhile potential Proceeds recipients. We should be able to announce an exact Show House Proceeds Amount within the next few weeks. Kudos to Astrid Willis, Patty Gonzalez, Nancy Davis, Liz Angelbeck, and the entire Show House team for such a successful 2011 Decorators' Show House. Our Casino Night Committee, led by Chrissy Pearl and Maureen Hannigan, has been diligently planning to present an unforgettable Casino Night in early spring of 2012. Look forward to more information coming soon! Several of our Member Liaisons, Nancy Reimann, and Carrie Aman, have already held a first-year member movie mixer. All who attended had a fabulous time. We look forward to the next Movie Night! This summer, I've had the pleasure to attend various committee meetings, and I am always inspired by our members' warmth, enthusiasm, intelligence, humor, and resourcefulness. Our Leadership Training at the end of August was certainly a highlight. The event provided an opportunity for over 40 of our members to take a closer look at their personalities and understand how they can better relate to others based on their general personality assessments. It was a fun-filled evening, and we certainly learned about each other and ourselves. At the end of the summer, a Sustainer Picnic is traditionally held. This year, due to some scheduling issues, this beloved event could not be held. Our sincere apologies for this; however, this means we can now look forward to even more fun at next year's picnic! We look forward to seeing many of our Sustainers at the Book Club nights, Dine Around, Investment Club meetings, General Meetings, and at events helping out many of our councils and committees this year. Thank you to the many sustainers who have already pledged their support to our league endeavors this year!! It's always a good time to think about your future role in the Junior League of Buffalo. Do you want to be a member of the Board? Do you aspire to lead this great organization in two years? Over the next few months, we will have our President-Elect applications available. It is extremely beneficial to have a full year of "shadowing" experience before taking on the role of President; therefore, it is ideal to have a President-Elect candidate nominated by this spring. As you can see, we are constantly working hard in the community, meeting new people, and having fun. Isn't that what being a member of the Junior League of Buffalo is all about? On behalf of the 2011-2012 Board of Directors, thank you for all you do as members and for helping to make us a remarkable organization! Julie Warman, President |

General News and Information

Notes from Membership Submitted by Sarah Snyder, Membership VP
As always, there are some very exciting things going on in the Membership Council! The Provisional Committee has been very busy over the summer with recruitment, and we are expecting an amazing group of ladies to be joining our ranks. The Training and Education Team has some fantastic speakers lined up. In addition to general leadership exercises, they will also be doing some council-specific training this year. Our Social and Meeting Chairs have also been hard at work. They have secured locations for the general meetings and are now working on finding some fun places for everyone to go after meetings conclude.
Additionally, this year the JLB is participating in AJLI as an Action Learning Team (ALT). ALTs are a best practices-based research and development model designed to help us think about who we are and what we do. Charged with exploring issues in one of three distinct focus areas--Membership, Governance & Management, and Community Impact--the ALTs will tackle a variety of issues and develop innovative solutions within their area of study. Our area of focus is the separation of governance and management systems. This strategic plan will be conducted over the next three years, so updates will become a regular occurrence going forward.
In closing, if anyone has questions regarding their status, or has membership inquiries in general, please feel free to contact Sarah Snyder at 585-520-0069 or at ssnyder@people-inc.org.

A late fee of $25 is assessed to members that have outstanding dues.

NEW PRICE FOR Great Lake Effects Purchase of Great Lake Effects is no longer a membership requirement, but it is still nice to keep the title in mind as a gift for someone special. Please also consider donating it to other organizations with which you might work outside of League. The book has a great new price--$5.00! The inventory of Great Lake Effects numbers approximately 1900. Don't forget: When they're gone, they're gone! Copies can be purchased through Jill at headquarters during regular business hours. All monies, either for new purchases or owed form previous purchases, should be submitted to Jill at headquarters either by check through the mail, by dropping off during business hours, or by leaving in one of two drop boxes--one located in the copy room or in the other next to the front door on the porch. |

What is a LifeCoach?
Submitted by Lynsey Zimdahl The Junior League of Buffalo, Inc. defines itself as "an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable." Additionally, The Junior League of Buffalo states as its focus Families at Risk. It is from this focus area that all work grows. As an organization striving to improve everyday life, steps have been takeen to both increase impact in the community and to streamline volunteer efforts. LifeCoach is a program under the guidance of the Junior League of Buffalo and its community partners that matches single mothers with personal life coaches. These personal life coaches will become mentors guiding the mothers through important tasks from preparing healthy meal plans to developing leadership skills. The objective is to target women at high risk of poverty and associated risks, such as poor health and low education levels. LifeCoach provides an opportunity to single mothers who might otherwise not receive the opportunity to provide a better life for themselves and their families. Female heads of households living in poverty face tremendous hurdles and are the face of poverty in Western New York. Two-thirds of families living in poverty in Western New York are headed by a single female. Many of these women and their families face health, education, and self-esteem obstacles. By working to improve their economic situation, opportunities are created for tremendous growth and for a reduction in possibility of generational poverty. Consider Buddying Up to Change a Woman's Life! A FEW GOOD WOMEN are needed to buddy up with a fellow Junior League member to sign-up now to be a LifeCoach Mentor. You and a fellow League member can share the experience of making an impact on the life a woman in need from the community. The commitment is one Saturday a month for only two hours each session. This is only 16 hours a year and a chance to get to know women who want to make a life changing impact for someone else and for themselves.
- A mentor can help jumpstart a career by teaching someone how to dress for a job interview and make fashion fun on a budget.
- A mentor can change a home life by teaching someone how to shop for fresh ingredients and cook healthy meals for a family.
- A mentor can bring positive life goals to someone and give them confidence and support needed to reach these goals.
- A mentor will be challenged and will learn just as many skills as the women they are inspiring will.
- A mentor will positively affect a single mother and in turn positively affect the future lives of that mother's children.
The members of the Junior League of Buffalo committed to this new project and voted to make a real impact for single female heads of household living in poverty in Western New York. In order to maintain the Junior Leagues's tradition of and reputation for follow through, a minimum of 10 members are needed to step up. Sustainers, Actives, and Provisionals are all welcomed...
Training begins on Thursday, September 22 at 6 pm at the Northwest Community Center and is brought to you by Compeer. Join with a friend or allow a partner to be found for you. Contact Sarah Snyder at 716.817.7269 or visit http://www.jlbuffalo.org/community/project-information/ for more information.

How Will You Make an Impact?
Submitted by Lynsey Zimdahl The many ways you can give your time and talents to the Western New York community! The Community Council members have been hard at work developing plans for the upcoming year and integrating their efforts to make a lasting impression for the focus area FAMILIES AT RISK. New this year, every member will be required to complete a minimum of two hours of volunteer work that directly relates to the community impact issue of "Single Female Heads of Household Living in Poverty." You can also be the catalyst for change in these women's lives by simply making a connection to those that have experience with this impact issue. Imagine the results when hundreds of women come together with a goal to leave a lasting legacy for single women struggling to care for their families and themselves. All Actives, Sustainers, and Provisionals are encouraged to help make positive change by working at least two hours in one of the following areas: Community Impact Project - LifeCoach Mentor: Buddy up with a friend to teach life changing skills
- Childcare Coordinators: Help create activities for kids while their mother's receive vital training
- Site & Program Coordinators: Set-up each session and make sure all materials are ready
Community Research & Development - Committee Members: Research potential new community partners making an impact for families at risk; evaluate existing partnerships and make recommendations for the future of the program based on existing needs in the community
Community Impact Public Policy - Committee Members: Work side by side with the Community Research and Development team to find ways to advocate to our lobby policy makers on behalf of single mothers and their families and research the needs of our focus area
Roundtables - Committee Members: Develop two to three workshops that relate to our community impact project that would be appealing to the general public and our membership by highlighting efforts of our community members on families at risk issues.
- Speakers Needed: If you have expertise in areas chosen by roundtable workshops, or know someone already involved in the area, help out by making an introduction
Do It In A Day - LifeCoach: Offer to do a mock interview at one session; collect work suits from your co-workers to donate to our mentees, or canned goods for families to learn about healthy cooking; assist the committee members with set-up for a session, or spend a session in the kids' area.
- Adopt a Family: Take the lead and collect school, home, and gift materials for one mentee throughout the year and make her family's lives a little easier and full of surprises.
- Roundtables: Are you an expert? Volunteer as one of the speakers or help to encourage community members to attend these worthwhile workshops by assisting with publicity.
As the year continues, more and more ways to help will be revealed. It is all up to YOU... Our success rests with the level of commitment the JLB has to makeing an impact for other woman in Western New York. Contact Community Council members today to learn more. The Flower Power of League's Own Kate Bukowski
Submitted by Pam Chrzanowski From "Flower Power" by Kristin E. Etu published in Canisius College Magazine (Summer 2011)... Everything is coming up roses in Buffalo. The city is also awash in daisies, petunias and impatiens. This picture- perfect array of color and fragrance is the lush bounty of Buffalo in Bloom. The grassroots gardening initiative celebrates the efforts of city residents, businesses and institutions that adorn their streetscapes with flowers. Mary Catherine ('kate') Bukowski '75, MBA '79 is the green-thumb behind the beautification project. "Our mission is to transform the entire city of Buffalo into the world's largest flower arrangement," says Bukowski, who is co-chair of the organization. "We want to improve the image and the appearance of the city, instill civic pride and make Buffalo a more attractive place to visitors."
Bukowski's inspiration for the project came during a 1992 vacation to London. The city was in the midst of a competition called London in Bloom, which supports and encourages gardening, horticulture and environmental sustainability.
"I was really intrigued and wanted to gather as much information as I could," she recalls. Bukowski returned home with visions of growing similar gardens in Buffalo.
