President's Message

Beth Montague Headshot

Dear Members,

It's difficult to believe this League year is coming to a close.  While we still have much left to do (read: Show House!), there is so much we've worked on together and accomplished as a League this year.  My heartfelt thanks to all for your input, comments, help, and encouragement over the past 11 months--this year has been incredibly rewarding for me, and I hope for many of you, as well!   I've been fortunate to serve between two dynamic, highly capable leaders: Past President, Anne Leary, who taught me so much, and President Elect, Julie Warman, who has been such an excellent partner this year.

I'll see you at Show House and at the Annual Dinner on May 24, when we honor Susan Reid Greene Russell Award recipient Molly Quackenbush, as well our Council and President's Award recipients.

Best,

Beth

Junior League in the News - Spree HOME
Spree HOME Spring 2011 Cover

The Buffalo Spree HOME Spring 2011 issue carries a fantastic article about the preview of the Show House, written by Spree's Architectural Expert, Barry Muskat.  The article gives some history of the house, and applauds League for taking on such a huge project - the revival of a local marvel.

It's a wonderful tribute to an historical house, and all of the efforts that Junior Leaguers, and the generous decorators and volunteeers who assist, make to ensure that the house is lovely, year after year!

NEW PRICE FOR Great Lake Effects

Submitted by Joelle Rebl, Cookbook Chair

Purchase of Great Lake Effects is no longer a membership requirement, but it is still nice to keep the title in mind as a gift for someone special.  Please also consider donating it to other organizations with which you might work outside of League.

The book has a great new price--$5.00!  Stop into the Show House Boutique to pick up your copy.  And don't forget:  When they are gone, they're gone!  The inventory of Great Lake Effects numbers approximately 1900.  Copies can be purchased through Jill at headquarters during regular business hours.  All monies, either for new purchases or owed form previous purchases, should be submitted to Jill at headquarters either by check through the mail, by dropping off during business hours, or by leaving in one of two drop boxes--one located in the copy room or in the other next to the front door on the porch.

Junior League Scholarships Awarded
Submitted by Julie Warman

Each year the Junior League of Buffalo recognizes two exemplary high school graduating female students and has the honor of granting them each  a $1000 scholarship.  Scholarships are given to students that have a demonstrated record of outstanding volunteer experience, excellent academic performance, and a well-rounded high school experience.

The eight members of this year's scholarship committee began working this winter to revise the application and discuss the qualifications.  Applications were distributed to high schools throughout Western New York via e-mail and a press release (Thank you Kari Anderson!!!!).   Candidates were required to return the application with recommendations and a transcripts by March 7.  We received 65 applications for this year's award.  Committee members reviewed and scored each application and met to discuss and select the two finalists.  The applications were most impressive, and the number of talented and committed young women in our community awed us.

Thank you to our committee members:  Ruthann Foley, Brooke Smith, Nancy Reimann, Michelle Lieberg, Geraldine Liquidano Cheryl Rossi, and Lynsey Zymdahl.  Their time, effort, and insight were incredibly valuable!

We are pleased to announce the recipients of this year's scholarships:

Julie Warman and Diana - ScholarshipDiana Emran is a senior at McKinley High School.  Her commitment to volunteerism is highlighted by her work with the Alive in Egypt website translating  communications that reached out to Egyptian youth exspressing demands for democracy in the world.  The efforts of this project were featured on both CNN and Fox News.  Diana is also active with the Greenteam at McKinley, and works with the Riverkeeper initiative and the Re-Tree program in Western New York.   Diana is a senior Senate officer, is in the National Honor Society, on the Debate Team, plays Varsity Soccer, and also participates on Track and Field.  She tutors Math and Science.  Academically, she is ranked 18 of 228 in her senior class.

Julie Warman and Connie - ScholarshipConnie Fan is a senior at Williamsville East High School.  Her volunteer work includes Clarence Youth Bureau, where she is a voting Youth Board member.  At the Youth Bureau she often works with community organizations, such as WNY Food Bank, Ronald McDonald House, and with the Special Olympics.  She also works with the Hands Around the World Club, through World Hope International, where she serves as Secretary of the Club; and with the Interact Club.  Connie is also involved in Track and Field, Symphonic Orchestra, Model UN, Math Club, and Earth Club. Recently, she traveled to Albany where she lobbied representatives about the cuts being made to Youth Bureau funding and has also helped create the Drug Education Speaker Series in the Clarence community.  Connie carries an academic average over 96%.

Show House 2011
Sincerest Thanks From Parties!
Submitted by Christina Pearl

Thank you to everyone who came out for the Black Tie Gala on Saturday March 5th!

It was a great success and an extraordinary party.  Magnolia Events did a fantastic job all throughout the evening, while Leon & the Forklifts sure had the dance floor packed all night long!

Even though our Western New York weather wasn't exactly what we had hoped, it did not stop the Garden Party from being a HUGE hit on Friday April 29th.

The jazz trio Impressions provided great entertainment for all those in attendance, while Magnolia Events once again floored all of us with their delectable food throughout the evening!  Kevin LoVullo from the radio show 'Speil The Wine' broadcast live throughout the night while guests and Leaguers finally got the opportunity to tour the newly transformed, 2011 Decorator's Show House.

Thank you again for all of you who attended the parties to support our Show House this year!
