The Junior League of Buffalo, Inc. is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

Dear Members, Great things are in store this month! Vicki Clark is coming to speak with us about getting the most out of our volunteer experiences, and she will also talk with a group of women about community leadership (this event is a collaboration between the WNY Women's Fund and your League). The League is also kicking off Women's History Month in partnership with a diverse group of like-minded groups, with a reception at the Central Library on Thursday. Additionally, there is the S how House Gala, and the decorators (and committee!) will no doubt be hard at work following the party on Saturday. We will also vote on LifeCoach, an innovative approach to community impact in our focus area (we voted in November to impact female heads of household living in poverty). The site of the proposed project, the Northwest Community Center, is very much looking forward to offering this service to its clients. I strongly believe this project is everything our members have been asking for-- kudos to the Community Research and Development Committee! Straw Ballots have been distributed electronically and on paper. A placement is a requirement for Tiers 1 and 2--in other words, if you've been in the League less than seven years. A placement, however, doesn't mean a leadership position--and the Straw Ballot is for leadership only, not committee positions. Committees will be filled later--and there will be a placement fair in April where you can learn more about those tasks. If you are interested in a leadership position, take a look at the job descriptions on our website and do ask questions if you have any. Keep in mind, the Junior League offers all its members tremendous learning opportunities--jump in! Best, Beth |

Don't forget to purchase your Junior League of Buffalo tee shirt. The
 | | Cut Tee, Back |
shirt must be purchased during the 2010 - 2011 League year, but before 4/1/2011, when dues for the coming year are payable, and after which members delinquent in fulfilling requirements are contacted. Tee shirt sales will both augment the operating budget and increase marketing opportunities. Shirts can be ordered over the Internet at www.bluebisonsports.com.
 | | Boxy Tee, Front |
There are two styles available, a traditional "boxy" fit, and one with a more modern fit. Blue Bison, a local company, will have your shirt ready in approximately two weeks. You may pay a shipping charge and have the shirt delivered to your home, or you may stop by their Williamsville facility to pick up the shirt; additionally, if you have neither had your shirt delivered nor picked it up at the facility yourself, you may pick it up at the registration table at the general meeting, where it will be waiting for you.

With Its Eye on the 21st Century the AJLI Board Recommends a Dues Increase Increase Would Be Association's First in 10 Years
According the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Consumer Price Index Inflation Calculator, since 2002, the last year in which The Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. passed a dues increase, the cost of living has ballooned by 20 percent. This means that the current rate of Association dues, $35, which has remained unchanged since 2002, is actually worth only $27.50 in today's dollars.
What to do? As any CEO, CFO, fundraiser or household budgeteer knows, you can only cut and reorganize for so long. That is true at AJLI where the year 2012-13 represents the "tipping point" where basic services, not to mention the big plans on the horizon, are in jeopardy. For this reason, the AJLI Board is recommending an $8 increase in the per capita annual dues rate paid by its member Leagues. The $8 amounts to 67 cents per member per month, and would be the first increase since the 2001-02 League year. It would go into effect as a $4 increase in 2012-13 and the full $8 in 2013-14.
AJLI has been engaged in conversations with League leaders and many individual Junior League members-new members, Actives and Sustainers-over the last few years about the future of all Junior Leagues. As a result of those conversations, there are bold new initiatives in motion and plans to ensure that all Junior Leagues are thriving and making even more significant, long-term contributions to our communities. A major focus of all of our work is the enduring commitment to enabling Junior Leagues to continue to be places where women can exercise community and civic leadership.
"We aspire to be nothing less than what our legacy demands: the most sought-after sisterhood of empowered and qualified female community and civic leaders creating community impact modern society has ever seen," said Delly Beekman, President of the AJLI Board and an Active member for the last 30 years in The Junior League of Monmouth County, New Jersey. "Back in 1901, when Mary Harriman got things going, that's how the organization was known, and we should work together to ensure that our presence is strong in our second century." Junior League Scholarship Application Now Available
The Junior League Scholarship Application is now up on the web site. The application has also been distributed to area high school guidance counselors. We will be awarding two $1000 scholarships to graduating female high school seniors who are outstanding volunteers in the Western New York community. The scholarships are given to the post high school institution to assist the student in defraying expenses for tuition, books, fees, or housing. The scholarships are awarded based on a record of outstanding volunteer experience and academic endeavors. The committee will then select the two finalists and the awards will be presented at a GMM this spring.

Great Lake Effects Still Available for Purchase! Submitted by Joelle Rebl, Cookbook Chair
The inventory of Great Lake Effects numbers 2,250. Copies can be purchased through Jill at headquarters during regular business hours. Though purchase is no longer a membership requirement, it is still nice to keep the title in mind as a gift for someone special. Please also consider donating it to other organizations with which you might work outside of League.
The Cookbook Committee consists of Joelle Rebl (Chair), Barbara Bielecki (Sustainer Chair), and Carol Rebl. It is important to note that these ladies have been charged only with the sunsetting of the cookbook and not with the collection of money for the sale of the book. All monies either for new purchases or owed from previous purchases should be submitted to Jill at headquarters either by check through the mail, by dropping during regular business hours, or by leaving in one of two drop boxes--one located in the copy room or the other next to the front door on the porch.
